Three giant parasites explode out of zombie praying mantis

This video was taken in Papua, Indonesia. We saw it happen five or six times before we finally managed to capture it on video. The horsehair worms infect the prey and modify the brain chemistry in such a way that when the parasite is ready to emerge, the victim commits suicide in water. The worm then emerges, lays eggs in the water, and the circle of life continues. Read the wikipedia article on Nematomorpha for more information.

The hair worm as a larvae goes inside a mantid host to feed off of it's fat, reducing it's size and stopping the growth, once it is fully grown it will make the mantis or cricket go to the water, jump in, so they can leave its body and breed, most mantid's survive the encounter.

Fun fact: These are called Horsehair Worms, and when they emerge they are done growing and fully matured. Unless the host drowns, they usually live on just fine after passing them. I imagine it is like taking a huge and satisfying crap after feeling bloated and constipated for a couple months. They weren't attacking the mantis, the mantis was just in the way as they were trying to coil around one another get hot and heavy and make bebes. They were basically done with the mantis.

@Python ... that's not how it works. The horsehair worms don't eat the organs, they hang out inside them, eating from the food that comes along through until they're big enough to mate. They then release pheromones that drive their host into water so they can emerge and mate. On the whole, parasites don't REPLACE organs. The only one that is known to do that is Cymothoa Exigua, the Tongue-Eating Louse, which replaces the tongue of a fish.

Unfortunately, the mantis likely wouldn't have survived. Once the hairworm grows enough it controls the mantis to go into water and then escapes, leaving behind basically a shell of a mantis.

Yes these things are crazy. They need to be let free in a liquid medium, so they kinda force the host to unnaturally submerge themselves to let them loose. Then with debris and other solid substrates in the water, they reproduce and enter a small intermediate host to be consumed by a larger primary host like a cricket or mantis. They are also known as Gordian worms, named after their entangled shape they make when reproducing.

Thank goodness! You just saved that Mantid's life. Those are supposedly called 'horse hair worms' that enter the mantid's body as a baby. They grow and develop inside it until its ready to enter the water and reproduce. It then tricks the mantis into jumping in water, causing the worms to escape through the... 'no-no' hole, drowning the mantis in the process.

Those are Hair-worms, they enter a insect by the insect eating something that has a small hair worm in it controlling its mind to make it enter water to drown the insect and escape its body to look for a new victim, there is no way that insect is alive as the Hair worm has a chance to also eat the insides of a insect.

If he survives yea, but the mantis is most likely toast. The horseworm controls their brains, so I’m not sure how aware the mantis is of what it’s doing.
