My Papaw used to buy rusty old bikes at yard sales, clean them up, and re-sell them. Never saw him pay over 3 or 4 dollars for one. Lol. It was the 80's though, and they were usually pretty rough. He always used the SOS pads that are impregnated with the soap. It worked great, as long as it wasnt pitted. The soap not only helped clean it, but also served as lubrication. Which kept the scratching at a minimum. He did that for 25 or 30 years, and probably did thousands of those basic restorarions. I never saw him use anything else, other than those soapy pads to remove rust on anything. It worked that good. I was grown before i even realized they made steel wool pads, without soap. 😆

Love the real world testing and results, you earned a sub! I have felt guilty of letting rust take over my bicycles. Since I usually can't figure out how to put them back together I never bothered trying but this summer will try researching and getting my old childhood crescent back in shape like it deserves.

Wire wool really is great stuff even used to use it to put bee’s wax on old wooden furniture ( long as it’s fine wool like you said ) . And another good chemical I found for cleaning awkward places on metal was tomato sauce . Because it’s thick it’s stays where you put it and like citric acid the vinegar in it cleans really well . Great ,interesting video 👍

Steel wool works great & you can get several different coarseness grades too, but I hate the mess. The wool breaks down immediately and gets everywhere.

Yes! It’s still very acidic & needs to be rinsed with a neutralizing solution of water & sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) & a bit of dish soap. I learned that from another KZbin video.

hi , ive watched your brothers channel for some years now and i like that you placed yours in the hoarders id so i can follow your projects , NOW on to the rust shittynes , im a car and mc guy but ie worked as a smith , and one of the fastest things ive tryed to remove rust as a household product is vinegar , dont know if you have the same strongness but we have 32% vinegar and its really good at taking care of the rust , smells a bit but its off in one hour or maybe if its heavyly rusted a day but try that out , sama es the citric acid with flashrust and so on but its cheap and really good . hope it helps on a project! nice channel you got .

The “black rust” after acid bath is the chrome oxide and the example of passivation of chrome. Similar to “red rust” but tamer in nature.

I've used citric acid for ages, just beware high carbon steel reacts very fast in it, I tried cleaning a chain just for a test, leaving it in for 2 days destroyed it! It came out seriously pitted and much thinner. Also citric acid breaks down certain paints and powder coat, I used it exclusively to remove the Dupont paint on a number of Tonka toys I restored for my grandson. The solution does last quite a while and turns a horrible yellowy brown and smells like rotten eggs, that's when you should dispose of it responsibly.

Does steel wool and aluminum foil seem very labor-intensive and I'm a lazy person. So I would start with the citric acid solution and touch up with the steel wool and then Preserve. Thanks for the video!

Hi buddy a great video again👍, you say steel wool is safe around decals how about the citric acid will it damage the decals on my bmx frame Or is it 100% safe?
@alloutbikes8 ай бұрын
It shouldn't damage the decals. 93% safe. To be safe use 1 cup citric acid for every 2 gallons of water. Keep checking it every 24 hours and pull it out when your 99% happy with it. You can clean the rest of the 1% with some time and elbow grease.👍
