You can salvage about 95% of that bike. I’ve restored some that were way more beat up. I can’t wait to see the finished product! Love the video Alfredo! Phu is really awesome!

Shouldn't use oxalic acid on aluminum. It can etch steel after a while it will eat away at the aluminum! Should use citric acid for aluminum. Awesome video. Loved seeing this. I had a 540 air also year older looked similar with no 990 mounts on straight shooter fork!

If you have a bench grinder throw a brass wire wheel on it not metal (brass is softer and more forgiving) and you can make things like that 1pc crank look brand new in 30seconds. It’s great for cleaning hardware chrome, nickel, alloy etc. Prob wouldn’t use on chrome frame forks bars because it will tear through through the finish pretty easy so go light feel it out. I use a dermal tool with brass wire brushes on the rough pitted areas then polish with something like Flitz or Quick Glo chrome cleaner to polish and treat the area to keep from rusting again. Hope this helps anyone. Love these videos man

And wear some eye protection if you do this! Wire wheels, especially soft or inexpensive ones, are no joke with throwing off wires!

@JeremyPoythress Жыл бұрын
I had the same dave mirra and completely restored it before i flat out traded it off. Ketchup works hard on the heavy rust and go over the wheels lightly with pepsi and tin toil. i use to soak bearings and small parts in gas overnight.soap wire pads and sandpaper is a last resort.

Woo hooo, a follow up. I use windex for grip removal. I say 3peice it, cleaner my opinion I do both though depending on what I'm going for. Don't know about that chain man new chain bars can always spray paint chrome 🤯 yeah yeah. Basically new where needed an the rest run it its clean now. Bmx let's roll I can't wait to see the transformation.

Right if that bike belonged to a rider cranks and bars would have been upgraded.

Aluminum does rust as seen in some of my videos of BMX survivors that I pick up. Never tried with bleach only use CLR mixed 50/50 with water & it's only $8.00 at your local Walgreens 👍

Soak a towel with the solution and wrap it around the bars so they can soak above the surface, even hand towels work, soak them and wrap whatever you want to be soaked,the towel will hold in place

I would replace all the small bits and that crusty gyro , and I would have polished the crap out of all the aluminum pieces, also I would have done a sealed three piece crank profile or power bites …. Then you’d have my 540 air exact same bike just parts as I described lol 😂
