Part 2 - Early Steps
In honor of my introduction to Gilbert and Sullivan by my secondary school music teacher, I wanted to create something fun but without some of the dated and inherently problematic lyrics of 'The Mikado'. So instead, I've written some new lyrics that will inevitably show their age in the future if we ever see the end of Miss Rona.
Big thanks to Mr. Willougby for providing some of my first opportunities to perform onstage - Operettas may not be my vibe now but receiving a grounding in music theory during my early teens in lessons and rehearsals got me to where I am today.

As an old G&S performer, I think that both Gilbert and Sullivan would have given a thumbs up for this. They were, after all, doing parodies of their own contemporary society, and our own society could really use an updated version of "I've got a little list" right now.

My Grandmother Patricia Worham ( Seacord) strode the Boards in London as Gilbert & Sullivan’s Princess Yum- Yum. She was a Prohibitionist and Bar Room Smasher and a Woman’s Suffragette who marched in Washington DC after She got Joint American Citizenship. She might not have appreciated the Alcohol… but I’m sure She would approve of the Performance!

I actually saw the Mikado for the first time this year in St Albans, performed by an excellent company (you should join them, they would be lucky to have you) called the Charles Court Opera. We were raised by my mother alone in the 60's and she ensured we were both exposed to, and later became contributors to the fine arts in the many various forms, including her favorite, light opera.- She would have loved this - incredibly clever arrangement. I AM a modern major G&S purist but I also adore the 1st amendment which allows anyone to slice and dice words as they please. But I noticed that you did NOT presume to modify Sir Sullivan's melodies. Kudos for THAT! I applaud ANY attempt to broadcast G&S erudition. Please keep it up!

That would be "Sir Arthur", as in "Sir Arthur Sullivan", btw. Just as the former PM was "Sir Winston", not "Sir Churchill", and Captain Tom became known as "Captain Sir Tom".

You may refer to Sir Arthur any way you please, of course, and it is not as though any reader could have misunderstood to whom you were referring. I merely thought that, as a self-described purist, you might appreciate a (purely Pickwickian) piece of advice on the correct style of address (and I'll be the first to acknowledge that styles of address are conventional and arbitrary things that are often, I suspect, devised to baffle "outsiders" -- much like the conventional pronunciations of place names, for example). As to the re-imagining of Three Little Maids by this singer (one young singer, I believe, from the context), it is true that this piece falls outside the narrow realm of G&S songs usually considered fair game for rewrites (the patter songs, generally). Here we are clearly into the domain of personal opinion. For my part, I respect purism -- there are certain airs and lyrics that cannot be touched by lesser hands without diminishing them -- but at the same time, I acknowledge the temptation to pay tribute to G&S by coopting their clever social commentaries for one's own social commentaries; I only desire that, if the thing be done, it be done well -- and Miss Blair does it well, both as a performer and as an "alternate lyricist".

The sorry part of this is that Hollywoodized versions squeeze out the original versions so that most people have the mistaken impression that G&S is slapstick comedy. To perform an original G&S operetta well is a significant challenge. I love G&S as those masters designed it. Shy of the Holy Trinity, there has NEVER been a greater Triumvirate. (Well, hardly ever).

@@byronarnason6006 OK, you got me with the last parenthesis! I too have axes to grind about the best presentation of G&S, having understudied and played some patter roles. For example, I personally find those roles funniest when they are played absolutely straight, not as caricatures meant as laughing stocks. Koko is an ordinary little man caught in unimaginable circumstances (oh, it's all beer and skittles until the boiling oil is brought in...), and he is desperately trying to humour this arch twit Pooh-Bah even as Pooh-Bah toys with him. And the Lord Chancellor does not for a moment believe that Strephon can produce an affidavit from a thunderstorm (though I have seen it played that way!) -- this is the ponderous humour of a judge making "witticisms" from the Bench that all in the courtroom must dutifully laugh at. And THAT is funny. Also from Iolanthe -- Phyllis is not asking Strephon which half of him is a fairy just to make conversation, this is a matter of direct (carnal) concern to her -- and if the actress does her job, the audience gets that, and roars with laughter. In short, I agree completely: G&S done well has few equals, and G&S played for cheap laughs and slapstick is a bore and a travesty.
