I built a 2 level IBC bioreactor and wrapped the cages with poultry wire to contain materials and stop rodent issues. The unit is mounted on a pallet sitting on 4" blocks. I placed Tivek plastic on the ground under the blocks to block invasive root mat that I have here. The bottom of the cage is the top id of the IBC with the 8" center cap removed and the opening covered with landscape fabric. This is for drainage into a tub that drains to the outside of the cage. I plan to use this drain off in my gardens. I plan to create a separate compost bin to create hot compost for a 4 week period and then place that into the Johnson Su keeping it full for an ongoing basis while harvesting from the bottom of the bin. Any suggestions you might have before I begin loading the Johnson Su would be appreciated

Drill some 1/4 inch holes in the side of the totes. Then it won’t have aneroid conditions and you can’t get it over wet.

You can reuse water from tote again and again , just put a small tank to drain to collect water and then use a small pumps to a make shift drip irrigation system on top off tote

Kyles is an interesting take, especially when using material that is a bit hydrophobic and hard to wet - no real issue leaving it a longer period (a week say for hay/woodchip) at the start to ensure fully saturated, will be briefly anaerobic but no long-term impact. Could even add in some organic surfactants to help with the wetting.

I used to farm with my father in south central Wisconsin. Back in the 80's after reading "Malabar Farm", we tried to go organic. Had NO help what so ever from the gurus at University of Wisconsin Madison. In fact, we were kind of seen as "fringe" folks. Fast forward to today and the UW Madison agronomy department is pushing rotational grazing, rotational crops and cover crops. Hm, imagine that; everything we were postulating about back then, now has the governmental stamp of approval! My suggestion (gently given) is to straighten up your totes and create a "university style presence". Label everything with the different methods. Make it real "scientific" looking. Create a single spot in a building for all of the totes so that everything appears organized. Some day you will have a "farm tour" of people that are learning this method. You want to make their education as easy as possible. I realize that you have an enormous amount of knowledge regarding this topic. And you are very passionate about healthy soil. Now, you need to formulate an easy way to help folks to assimilate and understand the nuances of this topic.

for my part, I can say that we also make similar compost cubes, and separately we make cubes with straw mixed with bull or horse manure, inside this mixture we lay plastic pipes 25-30 mm in diameter in a spiral and water is supplied through them into the reactor, which heats up to 70-80 degrees and is fed into the premises, or heats the greenhouse.

Thanks great video. You may have already answered this but what is the benefit to using pipes for airflow VS turning a windrow with a front end loader every so often? Does disturbing the compost have a negative effect other than sudden heat loss? It seems easier to turn with a grapple fork but I'm pretty ignorant of the process. Thanks

How are you keeping the totes from freezing in winter? You are heating the barn/storage area? Red wiggler worm death starts at aboùt 40F. If the JS freezes, you get worm death & they go hydrophobic. Complete shut down. How are you solving this?

lay down a couple of conduits or 2x4s on your strip of weed barrier then use a propane torch to both cut and melt the ends of the fabric and then you shouldn't need to tape the weed barrier.

@@youngredangus6041 this is all new to me and I find it fascinating. I use that same fabric in my garden that’s how I know you can use a torch on it. I have also been sharing a couple of you videos to a few Canadian farmers I watch regularly. I don’t know if they know about the bioreactor or not, but if they don’t I hope they watch. Our government wants farmers to cut their nitrogen back 30%. So this method you have would do that and more. I hope they spread the word too.

is there any slowly decomposing fabric you can use instead of the weed barrier matt shown here ? I´ve used it and it is no good. It breaks down so you have parts snowing on your compost. Or you have lots of single threads coming from where you cut the fabric preparing to fit your ibc or rebar mesh. I´ve seen decomposing planting pots so if there is a fabric similar to it that would be good.

There is a fine line keeping the cardboard moist and preventing from decomposing I would guess. Keeping the outside moist is tricky

@Dampflanze I use heavy cardboard when lining my upright grow rings/ovals made from wire fencing. It can last about three years (when I can find it & double line the rings) before it disintegrates. The rings are always exposed & usually have some perennials planted in. It wouldn't be a longer term solution v. using landscape fabric to line IBCs for YRA as he has multiple totes running.

@Dampflanze Yeah bike boxes! They are likely very sturdy too. I'm big on the culinary perennial herbs like lovage, thyme & oregano...etc. There are so many you can choose from. Some can take quite a bit of abuse too. If they get out of control, I divide or cut back.

For that reason I like the idea of Kyles design. I've got a lot of stable bedding (guessing 40% wood shavings, 40% straw and 20% manure) that I fill the bioreactors so the temperature might get high but I'll monitor that. Then pitch forked it into bioreactor. Pulled pipes after 24 hours. Temp got up to 147 for 4 days now today finally hit 80…but it’s also been hotter then hell out too haha

​@ryanradz A JS Bioreactor is a big stand-up worm bin. Worms are the engine of the fungal decomp process. Worm death begins at about 40F. Don't let them freeze for certain. Ideally they should be kept at 80% moisture. In most US climates they need to be under cover.

Did you try draping the weed fabric from top rail of IBC tote to bottom with some vertcal over lap along the "seams?" I don't recall. Also consider using a hand held torch gun to cut the weed fabfric edges which will also seal them to prevent fraying. There also a price tag attacher gun to help you join lengths of weed fabric rather than use tape or poke holes to insert zip ties. Using the shorter length plastic attacher might work the best. Less slack.

@@youngredangus6041 A top to bottom "drape" from the top rail of the IBC might be far less fussy. Little to no taping in place. You can do the entire container at once rather than in 2 or 3 sections. Stuff lies pretty flat if you roll it our a couple of days in advance to relax the roll curve.

I also ran a static aerated pile operation for a couple years... so, started with mesh rings lined with shadecloth... much wider and larger 'internal' volume, the dry edges were an acceptable waste volume... used pipes to start with, but for speed, ended up driving holes with a crowbar at about day three. can add/close holes as needed! tried a version with two stacked IBC cages.. looking to do my best replication of the original Jo-Su pattern... great results, but too high to fill! so now I'm copying you! hoping to get my reactors indoors soon. I reckon that'll help a ton!

The question is why to make a double bottom? That it was not the same to drill with a custom drill the same holes on the plastic anchor, why not? Anyway, you would have to drill the base. The reason is not convincing or practical, I think you should rather limit the water you should incorporate depending on the density of your organic matter.
