For all us oldER people, this exoplanet stuff is pure sci-fi. I still remember in the 80's when there were talks about how our tecnology soon would be sophisticated enough for us to being able to infer, from the "wiggle" and the drop in light intensity that there could be a planet surrounding this star. Then we found one, then four more, then many, and now it's pretty much old hat to discover one. Imagne that we went from "We simply don't know how common planet formation is?", to us now effectively being able to assign a value to one of the drake equiation factors is madness to me. Thank you so much for the videos, Dr. Becky.

It's interesting-I've looked at my astronomy textbook from the mid-80s and my dad's from the early 70s (I was interested in astronomy, and he took a class so he could answer my questions. His text said that we think other stars had planets, but of course, there was no way to detect them. Mine said we were pretty sure and were starting to look, but none had been discovered and of course, there was no way we'd ever get an image of them. Fast forward 20 years and not only had we discovered exoplanets, we'd directly imaged them
@daviddeavours4909
@daviddeavours4909 Жыл бұрын
@@almostfm Keep in mind the textbook in the 80's was likely written in the 70's and revised several times over the years. The textbooks from the 70s were likewise written in the 60's. The first exoplanet was discovered in 1992, so obviously there was some lag between figuring out how to find them and the textbooks saying you could. To find an exoplanet in 1992 we had to be looking in the 80's.

I found this channel two months ago and since then I am more or less binge watching it 😅 really great videos with a lot of interesting information in it! In this video I almost found the HST picture of the star formation region almost more interesting than the JWST results 😂 (but maybe that is also because I will (very likely) write my bachelor's thesis about star formation in the CMZs of nearby galaxies and how it affects the symmetry of these CMZs 🙈) I am already looking forward to the next video and I wish you a great and relaxing holiday! 😃☀️🌟

As a neuropsychologist, I must mention that one of the reasons to make the color picture is that people are objectively worse at telling difference in shades that vary only by luminosity. This knowledge has even changed the colors we use to fill plots.

WOW. Did you intend this, or was it just a VERY happy accident? At 12:18, where you are talking about galaxy clusters and trying to work out if they are at the same distance or just happen to be in line, but are actually spaced out. You move your hands close side-to-side, then apart, towards-and-away; and the focus on your camera stays with the hand that moves toward the camera, leaving the other hand and your face to go out of focus, blurry distant objects which just happen to be in the same line of sight. An excellent illustration of the point you were making. Did you know it was going to do that? If so, treble green shield stamps, double kudos, and a gold star. If not - it's still a magic moment. Well done, and thankyou.

So, you're coming over for the Total Eclipse in 2024? Cool! It's passing by just about two hours from my house. I'll be driving over to Arkansas to see it. The one back in 2017 went right over Fort Campbell in Kentucky, where my daughter was stationed in the Army, and we all went up to see it. I'd never seen a total eclipse before, but it has been on my to-do list my whole life. I'd been planning that outing since about 1997, once I knew there was one coming. And, you know what? (Well... of course you know!) It was the coolest thing I've ever seen in my entire life! It was a perfect day, and a perfect eclipse, and it was just absolutely wonderful! I hope you enjoy your trip over to the states. Have fun, be safe, and I'll look forward to your next videos. Thanks!

The problem I have to understand some of those videos is that they assume we know a lot of things that we actually don't know. It reminds me that I tried to understand a topic for many years and had classes with two big experts. One day I had a conversation with a graduate assistant that explained to me in an easy way something that two PhD were not able to do. The same thing happens with books. Some people write books to show off to their friends and some people write books so you can understand.
