THREE Options for Personal Devices in Microsoft 365

Business today has changed. Not everyone who works for us is actually on the payroll. But how do you enable your freelancers and consultants to access your company data in a secure way?
Our business lives have changed over the past couple of years. Lots of businesses aren’t tied to working 9-5 in an office. We work in a more flexible way. But something else has changed. Lots of businesses now don’t always employ staff on their payroll.
Instead, they use freelancers or contractors to get the job done. This has obvious benefits like a reduction in allowances such as pensions or taxes. It can also be more flexible. Why employ someone full-time when a particular function you need only takes a few hours per week?
We have multiple clients who work this way - from law firms to accountants to other businesses in the professional services space.
But from an IT standpoint, it can cause a huge headache.
You need to let the freelancers use your IT systems - they’ll need a corporate email address and access to your file systems, as well as access to collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams.
The most secure way we can do this is by buying all of your freelancers and consultants a laptop - which is owned by you and secured by IT. That way, you can be sure that your data is safe.
But do you really want to fork out £1000 for a device that a consultant might use for just a few hours or days per week?
Plus, if the consultants also work for other companies, does that mean they’ll end up with multiple devices?
Although it’s an option, it’s clearly not a good one.
So are there any other options? Well, if you use Microsoft 365, then yes, there are.
There is something called BYOD - which stands for bring your own device. So the consultant brings their own device, make sense?
Both Microsoft and the National Cyber Security Centre here in the UK have published guidance on how you should manage BYOD in your organisation.
Based on some of Microsoft’s recommendations and our own experience in delivering these technical solutions to our clients, let's just in and look at some options.

Hi Jonathan, Thanks for sharing the ideas on how we can manage the BYOD devices. As you know Microsoft has already announced deprecating the Windows Information Policy (WIP), which is basically the M365 policy which you're suggesting to use in second method on how we can protect Corp data in BYOD devices. Microsoft is recommending to use Microsoft Purview now to protect the Corp data in the devices but it requires the devices to enroll to Intune. Can you suggest a best way we to protect the Corp data in the BYOD devices without enrolling to Intune? Thanks...

Seems like practices here vary a lot from country to country.. where I live, byod is pretty rare, but for most that use contractors etc windows 365 seems to be the fastest to roll out and easiest to maintain now. Solves a lot of security concerns and is cost effective too

Good option for BYOD is now Windows 365 or Azure Virtual Desktop!

I think this solution was WIP (Windows Information Protection) that was deprecated... I don't know if we have a good solution for BYOD right now.. I think not...

I wonder why no one ever comes up with the idea of simply installing a desktop PC with a second encrypted SSD and second Windows. Physically separated and the private system cannot access the data because it is encrypted.

That would be Windows to go. Boot off an external managed encrypted drive
