Three Pro Drivers VS EVs - Will they buy one? The FULL Challenge | Fifth Gear

We meet three professional drivers - a driving instructor, a vet and a courier, who currently driver petrol/diesel vehicles, and invite each to sample an EV equivalent for a few hours. Each vehicle costs a reasonable £30,000, but can we convert them to EV power? Can we dispel some of the myths, and put their minds at ease regarding range? And what cash could they save if they converted to the EV way of life. First up the driving instructor, who gets a Corsa-e. Will the Vauxhall be just as easy to teach in when it comes to mirror, signal, manoeuvre? Our instructor and one of their pupils find out.

What I find really ridiculous is the selling features that the salesman uses, “ it’s got connections to all your devices, it’s all ready, it’s got the screen, it’s got blah, blah software,,full connectivity…” I went to buy a new heavy work truck, and walked out when they explained that the extra 10$k for the new 2024 trucks was because of the big screen, the connectivity, and all the software upgrades ….. I need a new truck BECAUSE THATS THE SHIT THAT FAILED ON MY OLD TRUCK!! The computer, the ECM. If I could find a simple work truck without all the crap that I don’t need I buy it. Some car maker, will get this figured out. They will sell a basic truck, reliable, simple to maintain and inexpensive, and sell millions. Think MODEL T, think Volkswagen BEETLE, Think 70’s Honda Accord.

At this point I think a cargo EV cargo van makes sense only for limited city use, there is no mention of high speed motorway range, or extreme cold range loss, also, if you eat up all the range while still at work, what does that make you loose in charge time. Also, no mention of the effect on the battery if you regularly fast charge it. I think this forcing of EVs is more political than anything. EVs are interesting, easy to drive, but in the end I don't think they are all that "green" all things considered.

The first guy looked like he was just reading off a script. We have a Tesla, and it’s shit. Only does 160 miles on a charge, costs £2000 to insure, constant range anxiety and we were falsely sold on the boot space. The main family car is a petrol.

what model? we've got the model Y long range; also you have to bear in mind climates are different in other parts of the world, for instance, in England, where I live, the climate can vary from -10 degrees C in winter to 35 degrees C in summer which has vary impacts on battery life. Currently we have temperatures averaging around 0-5 degrees. In normal temperatures we get only around 180-200 miles which is nothing compared to our petrol Audi A6 (gets 565mi real world average)@@ObiePaddles

I don’t think driving around towns as you did with all three car/driver combinations gives enough of a feel as to what the vehicle is like. You should have taken them out onto faster roads and country lanes.

As usual, you are only focusing on low mileage drivers. Local delivery drivers , driving instructor etc. what about high mileage drivers. I drive a Berlingo van , 30k miles per year.EV is a no starter. Would only get half the work done as I ll be stuck on charging bays half of the day . And as for the purchase price and range …............

There's no chance that I would buy an electric car, I would choose a non plug in hybrid one. I like to hear the sound of the engine. Thanks for the video, thumb up for you, thumb down for those ugly, useless electric cars. What was your purpose Fifth Gear? To push people to buy an electric car with huge batteries, not ecological at all, and possibly harmful for people's health? I know that it has not been proved, but at the same time it has not been proved the opposite. The system is pushing people to buy electric cars, but not for environment concerns, that's the excuse, but many people believe that. Thanks Fifth Gear, you are not anymore what you were before ... a channel that talked about cars. Now you are a useless channel about electric vehicles. Time to unsubscribe. Bye!
