I haven't found my style but I know what warms my heart and sends jitters up my spine. It's childish art, strokes , bright colours ,whimsical features and art that looks fidgety. I can do those all day long , endlessly .

Bang on! I stopped social media scrolling because I found every time I sat down to create something, the only thing that would come to mind was other peoples artwork ... I couldn't find any original ideas in my imagination. Then, I noticed that whatever I did create was never good enough because it didn't look like somebody else's work that I admired - I didn't see the beauty of the individuality of it, which in essence, was my own style in the waiting to be developed.

This brings to my mind Philippians 4:8 whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things. Big take away for me was be a present observer. What you think and how you think is so important. I have not thought about this in relation to art. This was really helpful.!!

Nice and well said Jenna! I kind of cringe when I click on "Finding Your Style" videos because of all the disinformation out there. I personally don't think you have to find your style, it finds you. Style is ever evolving, so again, great point. Sometimes what we perceive as our "style" can even take us by surprise. Young artists often try too hard and too early to define who they are artistically rather than just explore, learn and improve.
@mindofwatercolor

To answer your comment question. The biggest light bulb moment for me was exactly what you mentioned how interests and skills change and evolve. Also, it's been interesting and surprising to me how observers of my art could often identify my style when I couldn't and it often was intangible and not what I would have expected or described.

Excellent summary, and an encouraging message! The question of style is a difficult topic for some. We tend to invest a lot of pride in our work, and artists certainly deserve to be proud, but that has to be tempered by honesty with ourselves. We love your emphasis on building and maintaining skills, because there's no substitute for skills and fluency. The role of journaling is also interesting- that could work really well, especially for artists who need a way to plan their work before putting brush to paper.

As a professional landscape painter, with a firm grasp on the good, and mostly not-so-good content available to those learning to paint in watercolor ('watercolour' actually - I'm a Brit!) I have a developed sense for the advice that is worth listening to and the advice that should be avoided. In this video, Jenna's advice is absolutely spot-on, and please take it to heart. Watercolor has fallen into a strange place where it seems as though there is a 'right' way to paint, and the allure of certain 'elite painters' is the only benchmark by which to judge yourself; it is unhelpful and in many respects, anti-creative. Superb, timely advice - thank you.

Super thanks, Jenna🥰 I love watching my favorite artists paint. I've learned that I may like their flowers, landscapes...whatever. However, I’ve also realized that when I've tried to repeat what they're painting, I'm always unhappy with what I've painted. Now I paint flowers, landscapes...whatever, how I want it to look. Thank you, Jenna! My biggest takeaway from your video is to not let comparison interrupt your creative flow. I recently retired and have picked up my brushes after a long hiatus. I never tried watercolor because honestly, they scared the creativity right out of me. I have always had an issue with negative self-talk. Seeing so many wonderful free style watercolor paintings intimidated me. Now with my 'older & wiser' self I am learning to control the endless comparison traps and reteach my brain to say NO to negativity. I have enjoyed your tutorials so much. I downloaded your free workbook and took out those notorious watercolors. I worked through the book and am now working on my first painting that is ALL about developing my own style. It is a very controlled style at the moment, but perhaps it will develop into something better than I could ever imagine at this point. L.O.V.E. So thank you for the videos and Happy Painting!

I have a very negative inner critic and I’m so hard on myself, especially creatively. Through therapy, I’ve realized that it stemmed from going to an art based high school and we were expected to critique each others art. High schoolers aren’t typically the nicest people and their words and criticism became my negative self talk. I’m so glad that I realized where it was stemming from and now can dismantle those beliefs and rebuild new ones. Also, Jenna, I find your content so refreshing and inspiring. I hope to be a professional artist some day and your content is so helpful!!!

Hey Jenna. I have only just discovered you when researching ideas for featuring whales on leather boots. I have found you to be such an inspiration as it has taken me a few years to find my artistic identity expressed through footwear, and only just recently had the lightbulb moment to enable me to push ahead. In 2015 I decided to take the plunge and started to teach myself how to watercolor. But I have been held back with this very idea- developing my own syle. I usually am so positive about life, but have realized I have told myself in so many words, that I'm 'not good enough' to sell, to teach, to have a business etc. Watching your growth, instructions and encouragement has pushed me into a new thought process! I just joined your class on taking your stationary/cards to sell and I'm excited to move myself into this new path! Plus, I've been working on a daily sketch book so that's good. Thanks for being transparent!

I had the 💡 moment this spring, watching tutorials. I'm a graphic designer and live in a tropical area. I know, I'm 100% colour motivated, and the colour bombardement here, is brilliant for my mental health, photography and everything else I do. BUT in the 22 years of living here, I have never been able to paint. I've tried and tried. But I didn't get my old passion back. This spring I started watching tutorials on watercolour and realised, I loved Indigo and Paynes Grey?! Moving into darker, moody colour I now have a couple of palettes of watercolour mixed with graphite, and I can't stop playing. I've had to make the realisation that the clear colours, I love, in all other medias, I just don't love when thinned with water. I love the texture and granulation, add newspaper to my paintings for texture, use black Chinese ink on top etc - and suddenly I'm on a path to finding my style. I doodle a lot, and I'm not there yet, but my passion is awake again. Tutorials helped me realise that my choices, what I thought I should be painting was wrong. I just had to turn my beliefs upside down with this medium in order to find my style. So I would say, trying to find out what's important for you, colour, texture, lightness, tranparency (what you like about watercolour) is also a key, to begin to understand, what you can achieve ❤️ Sorry for the long post 😘😘😘 and thank you for this video! It made me think!

I started to refire my art practice 5 years ago. I decided to start small and go towards the path of least resistance. I used the materials I already had and purchased just a few extra things. I worked on paper in acrylics with 3X3.5 inch canvases. Really small! I let go of perfectionism, being precious with materials and went abstract to just enjoy painting for paintings sake. Thanks for the tips! Sketching is great for observation and present moment experience, but photography is one that really goes well with my style and I dig the immediacy.

Very interesting Jenna. I have a real passion for flowers, mostly based on my life's experience of raising cut flowers for bouquets. It has taken a lot of work to get to loosening up and painting loose or even abstract flowers. I need to do more sketching to counter that inner "I can't draw" voice. I told myself that I need to spend the winter painting landscapes, to explore that genre. Sometimes I feel I am chasing red herring.

Thank you for your video, it's nice to hear which one should go. I do online tutorials not so much for the style of the artist, but more for learning techniques, how paint flows, different techniques etc. Otherwise it might be hard to even know where to start. I hope the develop my own style once I have the "basics" down. I haven't used water colors but did take art classes through my school years, which now, was a long, long time ago. I am always scared o start because if it turns out bad, then it's kind of a blow to your ego and talent that you hoped that you have. Thanks again for your help. ,Ben

For the last one, I struggled like crazy with this one until I heard this single quote by Hemingway: "There is nothing noble in being superior to your fellow man. True nobility is being superior to your former self." When I read this for the first time, it felt like someone poured a nice cool soothing bucket of water over my inferiority anxiety. It was like I had all this stress about creating and negative hangups and as soon as the words sunk in, it was just gone. I don't have to beat myself up over competing against the entire art world because the entire time, my only opponant has only really ever been me, as well as the only being standing in my way. Get out of the way of your creativity, because when you only have you to fight against, you will succeed.

I picked up watercolor for art therapy to ease my brain loop, and to be honest i haven't considered myself "good enough" to even think about what my personal style is... but over the time following different tutorials i have come to realize what color palettes or subjects bring me more joy to paint (not sure that defines style but at least a preference)... i have also started to do some sketching (ink & watercolor mix) while traveling which is very fun and leaves me with more memories than just the photos as i have to pay more attention to details. I definitely prefer a more abstract than realistic style, with more muted, often monochrome or just 2-3 colors palettes. I guess that's a start. Thanks a lot for the video!

This really speaks to me! I’m coming up on my 5th year of painting with Watercolor with no previous experience. I followed a lot of tutorials the first 3 years and would get upset if my painting didn’t look like the artist’s who has probably been painting at least 20 years and more. I’m in a dry climate and many artists I follow are in the UK , more humidity so their paper stays wet longer. So now I watch tutorials for techniques , only.

YOU speak to me. I have been painting for two years and doubt myself when a painting doesn't look like the artist's. I also live in a fairly dry climate and struggled with my paper drying quickly! It was driving me crazy. It made me feel I was painting too slow! AND, because I am 78 yo, it made me blame myself and my age. So, I have promised myself that I will practice using more water, use the appropriate size brush, and good paper, and not be so critical of my painting. I've thrown out a lot of my efforts, and kept a few to learn what I need to practice 🙃 and learn what I want to paint.

I love your tutorials and I do practice them daily. I am a beginner in watercolor, so I always get stuck on painting my second layer of realistic flowers. I hope that you could help me with some tips to improve it.

Thank you Jenna, I definitely needed to hear this today. It's amazing how your advice is so relevant to other art forms. I struggle so much with comparison and negative self talk in my musical expression (doesn't help that my husband is an incredibly talented musician who's close to having perfect pitch). So I find myself tying my identity as a creative on my performance, and my slum days really take a bad toll on me. Even when I end up with a dud painting, I compare myself to younger me and say "maybe I suck now, as it should be easy and effortless", forgetting that I put a lot of effort and time into what seems simple. So thank you :) you made my day.

Thank you, Jenna for this video! It’s exactly what I needed, when I needed it! You are a fabulous teacher! ❤ Oh, and my favorite thing about this video is mention of the ‘flow state’. In my early days as a music therapist, I could easily find this when working with a client. I’m excited to learn how to apply this to my art. You are the best!

Great tips! Thank you for this great insight. I really like the 2nd one! I've been trying to sketch more and also sometimes just from memory alone, which is really tough. I used to do it when I was younger. A couple of years ago I was at an art show and met an artist at his booth who sketched and drew from his memory of an observation. Could be a landscape, a room, or a vase of flowers. Try training your brain to recall as much detail as possible. Draw it in your mind. 🤙🏻✌🏻

Thank you, you hit the nail on the head and wonderful advise, expecially sitting down and being aware of your subject matter and drawing as we see it. I'm my own worst enemy and I really dislike everything I sketch. Seeing my dad was an artist (where he did not pass down this skill to me... only to my son) I'm constantly compairng my sketches to what use to come so naturally to him and they all end up in the trash can. Not believing in your self is a terrible thing, I want to draw but shy away from it all.

Thank You, Jenna. This really got me to thinking 🤔 💭 I’m one that says 🤩 ooooh aaaah, I really like this or that artist’s work, I’m gonna try that! Then ☺️I get all bummed out and give up when it doesn’t even look anything like what I wanted it to look 👀 like! 😤😭🤧🥴 I’ll make a point of shifting into the tips you mentioned here and see what happens 🤩💖✨

Thank you for this, I needed to hear this! I’m going through therapy to correct my negative voice and it was like a light bulb moment to hear you say how it can affect one’s work as an artist. I am new to watercolour and find it so helpful for relaxing but I am totally guilty of all three of your reasons. Thank you so much for your advice and inspiration. Kassie x

Thank you for this. Since I started back doing my art, I have felt my creativity somehow stifled. It's like my creative mojo packed it's bags and left. I remember as a kid, I was always drawing, coloring, creating something. Even back 20 some years ago, before tech, before social media I remember having all these ideas and actually doing them. Then Photoshop came along and that's all I did. The past 10 years I have been trying to practice or just do some art daily and every time I sit down, it seems like a huge scary thing to do. You are so right about all three points. Comparison is a big one for mer and it does steal joy. Remember that song, "video killed the radio star"? Social Media killed the artist's creativity. Funny though it was through social media I found your video, lol. SM has it's place for artists, I know I have to control it, I am happier when I'm not constantly on it. Thank you again.

My lightbulb moment was the "comparison and imposter syndrome". I constantly question my ability and what the outcome will be. The self "what ifs" can be hectic and debilitating at times, even though I do get positive feedback from folks who see my art. I am self taught, which makes me feel inferior to those who have actually studied the subject. All my work has been subject to trial and error, but I do love watercolor.

I love this video. It reminded me of what I had been doing the past years and I just realized why I haven't improved much. I've just been watching lots of videos, copying others' works and just comparing their work with mine, and feeling sooo frustrated in the end.. that it makes me stop painting cos I can't even get a quarter of what the artist has done. Whoooo.. this video just blew my mind away. Now, I don't know exactly where to start. After collecting too much info and watching tons of videos, where do I begin ..?

I used to follow Paul Clark’s tutorials. I was a beginner and his tutorials really helped me to level up. I was finally able to turn out some paintings that I liked! But over time I began to be unsatisfied with the same colors he used all the time. So I’d veer off and started using my own. Then further down I became unsatisfied because it seemed like I was just making paintings that looked like his. I’d try to paint my own and I did make a few that I really liked but it was a struggle and most of the time I felt lost. His tutorials gave me direction… what to do next. I kind of stalled at that point. His tutorials dont really interest me anymore but I don’t like the constant struggle of me not understanding what to do next.. then spend the rest of the time trying to rescue it.
