Hello Paul, retired UA pilot here. Just discovered your channel today. Don't know why it took so long, but glad I made it. I watched some of your earlier stuff and was surprised how much we had in common. You do such a great job of relating to the world what you're doing and feeling. Makes me remember why I loved having the best job in the world. I too started young, got my private license in high school. Went the military route for the rest of my flight training. Flew F-8 Crusaders in Vietnam, got hired by Continental. Frank Lorenzo messed up Continental for a lot of us, so I ended up at United. Most of my career as right seater on the 747-400. Commuted my entire career, so I feel ya. Can't believe you did the Canyon thing. Always thought I might want to skydive, 'til I had to eject from a dead Crusader over the South China Sea. Okay, don't care if I ever do that again. Anyway, keep up the fantastic KZbin work and I'll keep watching. PS Retired in 2007 as 57/67 Captain!

People fear what they don’t know so watching pilot podcast, check rides, IFR IMC flights, bush pilots, and listening to ATC has helped a ton! Your channel is the best because it gives behind the scenes footage and the breakdown of your day. My friend has been flying with United for 31 years out of San Francisco and hates not being able to go to JFK to visit me lol. THANK YOU!!!!!

My fear is really just heights. I hate being in a tube 30+ thousand feet in the air and having my life in the hands of people I have never met lol. I still do it, but I just hate it. I can never sleep and just have extreme anxiety the entire time. The feeling of wheels on the ground is one of the best
@Emzzz782 ай бұрын
Same!! However, the feeling of getting out of the tube is better than the wheels on the ground for me. Only on the way home though. Flights to my destination, I don’t struggle as bad as I do on flights back home. Strange, but true

As a psychologist who routinely treats specific phobia of flying, I really enjoyed your video. A lot of work in the beginning involves "psychoeducation" about phobia, the body's response, and erroneous appraisals of the "threat" of flying. I like how you emphasize having people get more fact-based information such as information related to turbulence, and also humanizing the experience of flying where its to everybody's advantage to experience safe flying so we all get to see our families. P.S. - I have to check out that Illy cold brew, it looked amazing!

Another excellent video Paul from start to finish. Really enjoy your style of videos and your content. You are a consummate professional and it’s really nice to see the human side of things with spending time with family, enjoying your career, exploring new layover spots with great crew. I think every time I watch one of these videos I learn something different and reflect on how to create similar memories in my own life. Thanks for taking us along for the trip, and look forward to the next one!

I am so glad you said what I have always thought... When the plane is shaking and going through the rough places on the air and made me nervous, I always told myself "trust the pilots... trust the pilots... I am sure they have loved ones waiting and would want to go home to them..." Thank you so much!

The thing that helped my fear of flying the most was on United over a decade ago. I don't know if they still do it, but there used to be a channel on the inflight entertainment where you could listen to the pilots in the cockpit. Hearing how calm everyone was and all of the conversations about trying to find smooth air during turbulence helped me realize how commonplace it is and that the pilots were always trying to help us have a more comfortable flight. That, watching KZbin videos like these, and flying a lot more often have pretty much cured my nerves!
@mylayoverlife4 ай бұрын
We still have that on some flights. You can access it from the setback monitor, I think it’s called “From the flight deck.”

I was a phobic flyer for many years. Tried everything even flying lessons. It started diminishing over time and then I tried visualization and desensitization therapy. It worked almost immediately and today I am a fear free flier.

My son-in-law airline captain has helped alleviate a lot of my fear of flying. He answers all of my questions and I watch a lot of aviation-related videos and I listen to ATC frequently. Lucky me….I am going on a trip to Kauai in a few days in the company of my daughter and son-in-law!! Otherwise, I might be a little freaked out about flying over the ocean. But I’m actually looking forward to it. Thanks for your fun videos!

I used to be crippled by fear so badly that I once had a screaming crying meltdown during turbulence. 😂 I said “enough of this” and decided to do all I could to get over it. I read a book about aviation and learned how to meditate and now I actually LOVE flying. Even turbulence doesn’t scare me anymore. ❤

I want to applaud you for being genuine even when the camera is off. I have seen you on the escalators chatting with pax or other pilots. I wish you the best! I would often watch your videos commuting home!!! I would often find myself exploring the small cities we would fly into with OO. I also absolutely hate flying and actually watching your videos and a lot of flight attendant videos has helped. Watching people fly over and over for their job helps me realize there is nothing to worry about - if there was people wouldn’t sign up to do it every day! (Well… that and Xanax but hey it works)

Fun video! And great attitude. I actually did the same swing in Grindelwald in 2022. Good tips for nervous fliers. Any tips for sources that helps someone who hates flying because of claustrophobia? I honestly have 0 fear of the flying part or turbulance, I just hate being confined with 100's of people. Turbulance even helps a bit I feel like because it takes other peoples attention and makes it less likely that they notice that i'm wildly uncomfortable.
