In 3 minutes, this video taught me more about light fundamentals and behavior than hours of watching other KZbin lighting tutorials. Great video!!! Thanks.

...just discovered this in 2020 but it is still outstanding...understanding these scientific rules concerning light will reduce my learning curve considerably...now my experimenting will be based upon knowledge not just “trying to see what works”! 👍🏾💯

Wow, this was the most comprehensive and succinct explanation of lighting in photography that I've come across. I've been reading Light Science Magic and this really summed it up clearly in 3 minutes. many thanks

Excellent illustration, Ed. I thought I knew all of these rules but I did not put them together like you understood. This is a basic and must known video for all who are beginning to use flash photography. BTW, I just ordered a 600W flash + 120cm diameter softbox from a shop in Thailand for outdoor Pre-Wedding photography. These equipment will be available for pick up next week.

Nice summary, I love it! Keep in mind rule 1 is a good one but doesn't work as you get close to a line or plane source. So getting close to a kino (Sp?) or large soft box you need other rules. You could just use a light meter.

So is it safe to say, a bigger relative light source thats closer to the subject is what will produce softer light?

I am truly a novice. I put together exotic puzzles & jewel them with Swarovski stones & 24 ct Swarovski gold plated chain. I recently finished a geisha in full dress kimono. She's absolutely gorgeous. I've been asked for pictures but I can't get the pictures to show how decorated it is. In pictures it just looks like a picture. How can I take a photo that shows the jewels & decorations?

What is the difference between light waves and light rays? I'm confused because the frequency of visible light can be described as both particulate and wave form. Also, how does interference and diffraction play into these rules? Thank you for helping me to understand this. "liked"

Ron I don't need to watch your excellently made video over and over. Yes, a soft box is not a point source. Light is behaving different from inverse square law because inverse square law is only for point sources.It's not because of light's duality. It has nothing to do with that in fact. If you get to within the distance of about 70% of the length of the light source then your luminance will not obey inverse square law. Usually this isn't useful. Sometimes it may be.

I need your advice please concerning the lighting, I want to shoot overhead camera tutorials, I want to eliminate shades to the max and with enough light, is it better to have 2 softboxes with 5 lamps ports on each one, or should I rather go for 3 softboxes with one lamp port each. Thank you so much !
@edverosky7 жыл бұрын
I'll start by saying you need some shadows; that's what helps define the forms. But if you want to avoid a lot of distracting hard shadows, I'd say it's more about bigger lights, not more lights. If you put three softboxes up, that's kinda like one big light. You're going to have to experiment to get exactly the results you're looking for.
@rachidalami10047 жыл бұрын
well I mean it's the type of shadows you don't want to see on tasty videos for exemple, i'm looking for that type of lighting result.
@edverosky7 жыл бұрын
Notice this setup: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y6ilqaRjd86MfqMm49s Softer, but still apparent shadows under large lights. Smaller softboxes can be ganged together to have about the same effect as fewer but larger individual lights. So you'll just have to see what works best for you.
@rachidalami10047 жыл бұрын
I think I'll buy the 2 with 5 lamps each, try them, and let you know how it goes ;). Thanks for your time !

@Ron_the_Skeptic11 жыл бұрын
Mark, replay the video, repeatedly if necessary until you understand rule number 1. In a way you are correct, light has a wave and particle duality, so if you look at it sufficiently magnified to see the wave, light zig-zags like a car going down a highway bouncing off guardrails on each side, but the highway is still straight and mostly we are not examining light at that scale in photography. Keep in mind a softbox is not a single point light source.

light is a wave. It's trajectory/path is known as a ray. It can be called a 'ray' of light because that is what it is, however, to be more precise, some scientists/mathematicians etc. will call it a wave. It is particulate because of it's visual form if photographed (the photons), however, these particulate things come in various wavelengths and i forgot how to finish the rest of this answer. Hope it helps, and that someone super intelligent finished the rest of your question!

@senayfekadu68594 жыл бұрын
dude when f numbers decrease shouldn't it mean as if the light is closer to the subject rather than far away ?
@edverosky4 жыл бұрын
In the diagrams (rule #1), you see examples of how the light’s effect becomes weaker on the subject with more distance. Meaning to get a similar exposure, you need to open up the aperture more as distance increases.

the ball and softbox explanation would only be 100% correct if the softbox was replaced with an exposed bulb, "diffused" light leaves the softbox, light path pattern is randomized
@edverosky7 жыл бұрын
+Johnathon Windsor, light emitting from a bare bulb is also going in every direction. The answer isn't in the source or modifier, it's in the relative size of the source to the object. A bare bulb, the size of the soft box, could produce the same "soft" look up close. And you'd get more contrast as distance increases.
