Have been using polyclay for over 20 years and my best advice for this process is practice, patience and simplicity, often the suggestion of a detail is easier and more effective than precision. I spent so much time trying to be precise and highly detailed to discover that less is more, Another great tip for backgrounds is to over pack the outer background and then trim away extra bulk in the shape you want before reducing, or reducing the cane and then trimming away extra packing in the needed shape to make complex patterns look sharper, making small details stand out better. Hold your canes away from you, so you can see the image at a finished distance, and less up close, it gives better perspective during the building process.

Omg! Just came across your video today! Amazing! I’ve been into clay for 8 yrs and have stayed away from canes bc I’ve just never been able to get them the way I’ve wanted! Never been able to find a teacher that I could connect with and understand! U r a master cane artist! I’ve never ever seen anyone use these tech and get such amazing results! Other videos have always been drawn out and much more complicated! Like I said I’m new to your videos. If u haven’t made more intstructional videos please consider doing so! U diffinetly have a new follower! Absolutely beautiful work!

Not that all your canes aren’t marvelous, but the first flower cane you showed in the video was spectacular! I love the delicate flower pattern whether it be clay, fabric, ceramic, etc. It is so easy to get frustrated when I try to make a cane pattern like yours and fail. I appreciated the reminder that building canes like yours takes a lot of skill and practice. I’m sure your first canes didn’t look like the canes you can make today either. Thank you for sharing your stunning work and the tips and tricks you’ve learned along your journey.

Your canes are beautiful! May I ask your opinion on what brand and type (for example, Sculpey Premo) of polymer clay is best for making canes? I've learned that mixing brands and/or types can be iffy because the harder clays (Fimo) don't stretch or flatten out as easy as the softer clays. So then my cane comes out warped.
@megnewberg Жыл бұрын
Thank you. My all-time favorite is Premo, but that's just personal. I've heard great things about Sculpey souffle. You can mix brand together, but I wouldn't use one solid color of one brand with a solid color of another brand. I've totally done it before though. As you say, the important thing is the consistency, but this can be evened out by adding softener to some and leaching others.
