Actually tried the Goldwing and found it to be just as uncomfortable as the BMW R18TC, for exactly the same reason. The jugs hanging out of the side and lack of legroom. Also the Goldwing is a bit cramped for a fellow over 6’3” tall. So I bought an Indian Challenger Dark Horse with a Tour Pack, still have my Beemer R1250R, need to have options y’know.

Hi Andy, As a 2021 DCT Goldwing Tour owner for the last couple of years I personally found this video quite entertaining, especially the backroad clip at the end, this really highlights the abilities of the bike and shows just how much fun they can be to ride. Yes the bike is heavy but the pros far outweigh the cons, without doubt this is the best bike I’ve ever owned!

I've ridden the first model and the old and new models of Goldwing and found they are absolutely great machines especially the new models. Goldwings aren't for everyone figuring in the cost and garage space. However, I've not met anyone in the 47 years that the Goldwing has been around who owned one or has ridden one for more than a few minutes that did not have a high opinion of them.

Had a 1984, 1988, 1995, GoldWing. Ridden a 2006 GW at a Honda demo day. Switched to sport touring with a 2005 ST1300 (new) and rode it 50K miles in five seasons. Switched to Yamaha FJR1300. Have owned 3 of those now. Currently on a 2020. Just tried a new Gen 6 GW this week thinking maybe I’d go back to a GW. They look so good. I’ll give it has a silky smooth engine and good torque in “sport” mode, Cadillac smooth ride. But sorry, still to big (I don’t have a passenger) and not sporty enough for me. Closed down that idea of going back to a GW in my mid 50’s. I’ll stick with sport touring. I can cross the continent no problem on it and do 800 mile days no problem. No GW for me.

You never heard the phrase......."I'd rather push my harley than ride a honda?" Many still can't get past what the Japanese did 80 years ago or so. Another lifetime and a few generations ago. The same for German cars. I know some who hate VW because of the germans. Years ago I worked at a shop and the boss soon hated me when he found out I drove a 75 VW bug. He was a prisoner of war for a short time and turned against me quickly. I quit a few days later.

You are a great ambassador for motorcycling and the content your produce is top notch. While I agree about some bike seeming to have a stigma, I think that is mostly from people who don't have a lot of real world experience in the world of bikes. In the USA there is a common perception among non-riders that Harley owners in general hate anything that isn't H-D. Almost everyone I know, including myself, who owns a Harley also owns/ has owned other brands. At the Harley events I've attended talk was about bikes. Nobody was standing around bashing other brands. Small sample size but IMO riders are a pretty nuanced group and most of us are just grateful for the moments when we get to be on the road. Ride safe and enjoy your Goldwing. It is a cool machine.

They can get out of shape when pushed hard. One of the places Honda went cheap was the suspension. With no preload up front and only 1980's single point damping front / back and preload out back, it's a hack. The thing that saves it is the multilink and it's geometry up front. And the geometry of the Pro Arm out back. If Honda had screwed up the geometry, current Wing would be no more than a over priced honey wagon.

However, some concerns: include the weight, what's it like on tight twist roads e.g with uphill/downhill hairpin corners, parking when out and about (too big for normal bike spaces), manoeuvring in tight spaces, is it Ok on back roads ('B' roads, unclassified) or really just for major 'A' and Motorway cruising. Any comments appreciated. I probably just need to find one to ride and find out for myself; if I can find a demo?

I agree absolutely with everything you say. I've had my DCT Goldwing Tour for 4 years now. I have done approaching 25000 miles on it so have got to know it pretty well. There are so many incorrect myths about them which, as you alluded to, are mostly spread by people who have never actually ridden one. The weight is absolutely no problem at all. I am 62 yrs old, been riding since 1978, stand 5' 6.5" tall (I sometimes claim an extra 1/2 inch at 5 "7" haha) and weigh in at 10.5 stone. I have no problems handling the bike in all circumstances including pushing it around backwards and forwards (the creep modes are very useful on slopes and rough surfaces though) and putting it on and off the centre stand. It is all down to correct technique not strength. IMO if you find the bike too heavy it isn't because it is but rather because you just ain't doing it right. Currently I have three other bikes (1976 Goldwing K1, 1979 CBX1000Z and a little CB175) and have ridden many other big bikes of numerous manufacturers, my last modern one being a Pan European. I find the new Goldwing is actually easier to manage than most of those other big bikes (exception being my two old FJ1200s) because of the centralised mass and the ergonomics suit quite small people, i.e. I am not stretching to reach anything, including the ground. Also some people talk down the DCT. I was sceptical at first and initially thought I'd made a mistake opting for it. But after riding with it for a couple of thousand miles or so and fully sussing out how to use it all to best advantage I realised just how good it really is. A brief test ride, especially on a bike with low miles and not properly bedded in, isn't enough time to familiarise with it properly and can actually create a false impression if you've never ridden with it before and don't fully appreciate how it all works. All in all I love the bike and use it for everything from popping to the shops to full on long distance riding. I can't see myself parting with it for a long time to come. One other thing to say. Since I have had it I have not had one single fault. Not even a niggle. Just had to replace the usual consumables. It was expensive for sure but I certainly do not feel I've been ripped off. IMO, considering how well each of my bikes has lived up to my hopes and expectations, this Goldwing is the best bike I've ever owned by quite some margin.

If the “two-up” feature isn’t wanted, but most other things a Goldwing delivers are wanted, is it still a great choice? The reason I ask is because (at 70+) I’d like to consider a “pipe ‘n slippers” bike, but I never want and rarely require a pillion. For me, it’s coming down to an NT1100 or . . . ?
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
Yes if you like the Gold WIng for what it is then go for it! Great bike, but for me if I could only have one bike, or if I didn't have the need to carry a pillion, I probably wouldn't have the 'wing (it's size and weight does sometimes get in the way even though it's largely mitigated by those handy creep modes).....

I ride the 2012 Goldwing so would love to hear your views and comments about the previous model and the difference and improvements since. Btw, I got my 2012 Goldwing 2 years ago . I’ve still got a few years to go before hitting 40. So yeah! There are younger Goldwing riders lurking out there 😂 Cheers!

Many Wingers consider yours to be the best gen Goldwing ever built. In many ways your 5th gen is a better over all bike. While it is larger and heavy as hell and in many ways was out of date style wise when it came out. And it does have old tech suspension. The forks can be kitted out and a much better rear shock and spring combo can be fitted. You can truly make the suspension great! And it does have the better engine. The two valve engine is much quieter and very tunable. It is pre eurotrash4/5 and can be tuned very high and never over stress it. It has steel sleeves in the cylinders, cams are shim and bucket, better rod and main bearing setup, better piston rings and no DCT. Just a simple tune with no exhaust or intake mods is good for 20 to 25 hp. And it goes up from there with cams and finally exhaust and intake mods. With exhaust and intake modes being the least bang for your buck. Your not missing anything by having a 5th gen at all.

Andy, I love the look of the Goldwing and would like to own one, unfortunately buying one would put a very big dent in our savings, and I am sure my wife who doesn't share my passion for bikes as Mrs Flyer does would have something to say about that. As I am a pensioner with doggy knees and ankles I am not sure I could move it about with confidence and that would be my only gripe about the bike. I just about manage my Triumph Speedmaster1200cc. Have you had any exploding gears occur on your 6th Gen bike? I saw in the USA that some 6th Gen Goldwings, well basically all of them, are at risk for exploding and seizing transmission gears, where a primary drive shaft gear bolt can shear off. Is this a real concern? Also the 6th generation bikes have a fuel pump recall, which I assume isn't a huge concern. But the gearset problem is very alarming.

A while back you installed a Russell Daylong saddle on your Goldwing. Now that you have put some miles on it, how do you like it? I'm torn between the Saddlemen Roadsofa and the Daylong. The Saddlemen doesn't require you to send in your factory seat for the rebuild, which is a cost saving for me since I don't have the original seat. But I think I will be kicking myself for not buying the Daylong. Your thoughts?

Hi Andy, I have ridden the non DCT 2018 Goldwing and while it is a FANTASTIC motorcycle, I have to disagree with you about it being the ultimate tourer. I prefer the new R1250RT (after renting one for two weeks in Colorado last year). Same super low center of gravity, a little lighter, easily more flickable, plenty of power and uber comfortable. Keep the videos coming. I really enjoyed the CB1100 review. I've been debating getting one.

The RT is great (I just rode 1000 miles through Italy on a new one) but it isn't as comfortable as the Wing, doesn't have that 6 cylinder engine and has looks only a mother can love.....well that's my thinking - still an awesome machine though despite that. Better value too.

I owned the very first Honda Goldwing GL1000 in the UK back in the early 70's, it was like riding a cloud compared to any other bike of that period, it was ground breaking, I blew the engine up after 3 months and had to trade it for another exact same new bike, people marvelled over it back then. I also own a BMW GSA now and likewise some people hate it for no other reason than they've seen other people on social media criticising it, I think it makes them feel like they know what they are talking about and makes them feel like a superior biker, I've been riding motorcycles since I was 16 back in 1972, after more than 50 years riding many different brands and styles of bikes I love all bikes, I couldn't care less for anyone else's negative opinions, I know what bikes are good for me and what I like and that's the ones I'll be riding and that's because I have a mind of my own.

Hi Andy, I’m getting very tempted to sell my beloved BMW GS 1200 Adventure in favour of a Honda Goldwing. Most of our rides are 2 up tours around Wales, England and occasionally Europe. In a perfect world I would keep the GS as well but can’t really justify that. As you well know the GS is the perfect all rounder, so literally my only reservation is whether the Goldwing will be too much of a beast for the short trips I do too? What are your thoughts from owning both please? Also what is the Goldwing like for Lane splitting in heavy traffic please? The GSA is no small bike but it does still get through the traffic well. Many thanks
@TheMissendenFlyer Жыл бұрын
To be honest I couldn't live with the Gold Wing as my only bike (I too struggle to justify a GS as well) - if I could have only one then it would be the GS, it's such a good all rounder. The Wing is marvellous on tour but not great for lane splitting.....

Thanks Mr. Flyer, I actually envy you being able and confident enough to ride such a large machine. I've been biking for many, many years but haven't ridden - let alone owed as many bikes as you, so If you say it's a great bike you'll get no argument from me. I don't understand why different groups sometimes distance themselves from others - We're all bikers (and road users) after all. I started on mopeds at 16 and one day the bike broke down on a rather quiet road and I was failing miserably to sort it when a group of large and hairy bikers on big and noisy bikes pulled up in their scruffy leathers and cut off denim jackets. They surrounded the bike and started "attacking" it pulling bits off and generally causing mayhem, but then they roared off and sitting in the lay-by was my little bike ticking over better than ever and ready to ride home. Since then I try not to judge on appearances :>)

I guess the problem is that unless you can afford multiple bikes and have room to store them most 'younger' riders will always look elsewhere first. It's not until later on when you have time and money to tour and can afford a GW and prioritise comfort by which time yeah you might be a bit older. Hello from Denver, Colorado. I agree 1,000%! Been riding Honda's (dirt & street) for 50 years. Sold a '13 GW F6B. Got a white 2018 DCT tour. OMG, what a bike! Debated on the DCT, but got it and after 2-3 miles I will never go back tom a clutch. I ride the paved mountain 2-lane twisties here in Colorado, and the low CG + gobs of torque make it the bomb! Brakes rip your face off, and the suspension is off the charts! Only "issue" is slow-speed maneuvers are harder w the DCT, vs "old school" feathering the clutch, brakes, and fuel. Never had the issue, but my Honda mechanic said the clutch systems in the DCT don't like slow-speeds and can fail. No bike is perfect, right?

That's never been a thing on any bike I've had before, always needed a break much sooner.. As you know its a bike that just makes you smile every ride.
