As soon as you mentioned "proper breathing" I remembered how important it is always. We don't breathe deep enough in our everyday lives.

I am 68 and in the last few years I have torn both rotator cuffs and after surgery tore my left shoulder again. Almost all of my self defense training and practice has gone out the window. I love your channel for several key reasons. No clickbait, excellent content including videos on elderly people, and real world practical useful advice. Thank you so much.

Great advice and thank you very much for sharing. Once being in a situation where I couldn't de-escalate an attack from two guys (despite multiple attempts), and believing that I was about to die, I committed to fight with everything I had. It took me 4 years to prove my innocence and be acquitted, but thank God I am still alive and sharing it with my family.

I was “committed to getting out of a situation and surviving;” the day after an attacked I bought a knife on a belt holster, and was attacked again after arriving home from buying it. I had it on already and they turned and ran after seeing it. I almost caught them. I have since moved. 🇨🇦🙂👍

I believe that self worth is very helpful in commitment in any situation. We live in a time of high 'victimhood' and it is easy to see how easily people bypass, ignore or are completely oblivious to critical situations and go into cognitive dissonance or victimhood behaviors. So take a deep breath and be ready and observant. Prepare your children to 'fight back' or stand their ground it's important. Great tips, always!

Thanks for the video. When criminals broke into my home in 2018, I had that moment of denial. At first, I heard noise in my enclosed front porch. I thought that a pet was bumping things around in his cage. He'd made similar noises in the past. Then, I heard a ping of something metal hitting the concrete floor on the porch. I thought that maybe a mouse was running along a window sill and knocked off something metal. At that point, I really didn't think something bad was happening. Then, I heard noises from the storage room in the back. I could tell that I was hearing something larger than a mouse. At that point, there was a moment of fear that something unusual was happening. For a few moments, I didn't move. In part, I was in denial. In part, I didn't know what to do. I thought I heard something on the front porch again, and there was a feeling that something was coming at me from two directions. At that time, I didn't carry a firearm in my house. My firearms were all locked in places that I couldn't access without going through whatever was there. As I heard more noises, I realized that I needed to do something. I still had some hopes that a raccoon had gotten into the storage room and that the front porch noises were just mice. I grabbed my cane, a push dagger, and a small kukri. I walked towards the storage room. The door from my kitchen to the storage room has a window in the top half of the door. I saw a vertical shadow pass over some boxes in the storage room. At that point, I knew that I was dealing with human intruders, and I howled. At least howling forced me not to hold my breath. With the howl, I started moving. I ran to the door to see the "Bonnie" half of what I would learn was a "Bonnie and Clyde" team running towards the door of the storage room. I shouted "You're going to F***ing die!" That seemed to add a little speed to her step. They had at least one gun, but neither of them tried to shoot me. I took a revolver from a safe. I didn't have any problem understanding the revolver, but I couldn't get my cell phone to work. My fear regressed me to where I could use 1840's technology but not twenty-first century technology. I needed four or five attempts to speak to 9-1-1. A bluetooth headset was still connected to my phone but was in a different room. I was just dialing the phone and not hearing anything from the phone when 9-1-1 answered. I put on the headset just to free my hand, and then I could hear the dispatcher trying to talk to me. I think my breathing was okay while I was talking to 9-1-1. I don't remember the dispatcher telling me to breathe deeply and slowly. The sheriff's captain arrived after about twenty-five minutes. I can't say that howling is a good technique, but it certainly caused me to breathe. Within a week, I had ordered and received motion detectors to put in all of the places where the intruders had been. I've had some false alarms since then. Moths often cause motion detectors to chime. I think movement of the house with changes in temperature can cause false alarms. I realize that you are talking more about street defense here, but motion detectors, lights, and similar things are good for giving oneself more time and space in a home defense scenario. Unfortunately, much of the modern technology for cameras and similar devices depends on good Wi-Fi, and I'm in too rural an area to have good Wi-Fi. I have to make do with lesser options. I was not fully committed at first. When I got out of my recliner, I didn't remove the sheaths from my kukri or push dagger. If Bonnie or Clyde had come on my quickly, I wouldn't have had time to deploy my blades properly. Once I had seen intruders and gotten my revolver, I was fully committed. If they'd come back, we would have exchanged gunfire. Bonnie and Clyde were captured a few days later after a high-speed chase.

I always tell myself when i go out into the nights just "dont be the prey" and so they leave me alone 99% of the time but when i have friends, they are confused with my unusual confidence and they never like the prey analogy when i explain the mindset shift so from now on i will tell them "i present more commitment for safety than the ones may present hostility out there" MANY thanks for this video! great stuff to think about!

As a medicine professional (psychiatrist) with education in hypnosis I can tell you, what this deep breath really means: under stress human beings strting to breath quicker (what everybody knows, I assume), but what's more important: the time to exhale becomes to short. Extreme form in hyperventilation-crisis. So in stressfull situations it's important to take focus to exhale, wich stimulate your parasympaticus. Your hardbeat lowers a bit, you become a bit calmer, so you can analyze the situation you are in better. It will even effect the aggressor, when he notices, that you staycalm. So focus on exhale, inhaling does your body on its own under stress.

Training helps with all these. Training especially helps with commitment. I seen this first hand in the Marines and other training classes I’ve taken/helped teach. You’ll revert to your training, it’s interesting how it can almost be automatic. Good video

Excellent points as always. Overall Warrior Mindset is also a critical piece IMHO. If you've decided you need to act, be prepared to do what is needed to escape or neutralize the threat. I learned this as a child. I was often bullied for being cross-eyed.

Not just deep breathes, but actually breathing correctly...most people are mouth breathers which is terrible for your diaphragm. People should breath in the nose and out the mouth. Great video dude 🫡

All of these ideas have merit, but the one that's most relatable to me is accepting the situation. I know my friends who served in combat could tell cooler stories. But in sports, especially contact sports, you'll find yourself dropped in the shit and you're gonna have to work the problem, or the play is going to go from bad to worse. There's no time to think. You just notice oh sh*t, that's a linebacker. He's bigger than me, and he's coming quick. In early days, you'll sh*t the bed and fumble. But with some reps, you learn that this is the game. They hike the ball, and you're in it, and no one cares how you feel about that. If you want to play, you accept it--yep, linebacker - he's got me, well, I'm going to keep my legs moving, and the rest is his problem. I bet martial artists have a similar relationship with that acceptance concept. Hey, you're in it whether you like it or not, get busy living or get busy dying.

6:42 that tunnel vision is a real gem, all of these are but commitment to the situation and mentally accepting whatever happens, happens is what CAN help you to win even if you werent going to originally. Like you said bro theres 100’s of weapons but the mind will always be your best one, important to work with that voice in ur head instead of letting it work against you

Being able to think, rather than an emotional response, or a reactionary response. For me knowing to try to remove yourself from a dangerous situation rather than engaging is prudent. My question is you want to have injuries, or you want to get away, and stay healthy ?
