This is ridiculous. If you think you can deflect incoming shots during a fight you are crazy. All these combos are not at all realistic. They work great in slow motion a d not in a real fight scenario.

I agree! For an expert with many hours of training in many different situations, some of this may work, but for the average person to try this when being attacked, then they are in for some trouble and pain. He should just teach the basics of how to hold it and strike with it in different situations and positions. He may as well be teaching leg sweeps as this stuff.

It's pretty obvious this would not work. You can't react fast enough, let alone predict movement in a street fight, in the video the guy is slow and then is totaly open after his one two sequence. His punches are straight and super extended( no one does this, maybe if your opponent is drunk). NOt only that, but you could just use your fist and be more effective than trying to use a pen. The best self defense mechanism is in a physical fight is without a doubt pepper spray, which means all of this which renders these self defense classes useless. It can be fun, don't get me wrong but it's a gimmick. if their techniques were so proficient than the MMA fighters would use them, that's the proving ground for a fighting style. As far as we know, boxing, thai boxing and submission holds (either through brazilian jiu jitsu, judo, and wrestling) are what work when fighting ONE ON ONE without any weapons on both sides.

I am considering buying the Gerber Impromptu steel ink pen due to it's construction and because it would be handy if attacked and I have to use it to defend myself. I worked for the Arkansas Department of Corrections and was attacked in a barracks where this weapon/tool could have made the difference for me. I was fortunate to be able to retire and I thank God for being with me each day I was working there.

Something I learned from an instructor (was just 3 day course) was that you shouldn't try and over think a fight when it goes out of control and you're inexperienced. Kids are the most difficult to pin compared to adults coz they squirm, kick, scratch, bite and scream. They go berserk. I think the average person would have better luck just going for vital areas. You'll take some punches, even stab wounds in most cases of a knife fight, but if you keep your vitals clean and go for theirs which is the throat in this case, or sensitive areas if you don't plan on killing the attacker (in which case it could be your drunk colleague at a party getting out of hand with you) where you go for their arms and legs. That's just my opinion. Choreographed fights for newbies aren't the safest to learn. Either way thanks for showing what the pen can be used as.

You do realise a "deadly weapon" is an offence that can be levied against anything. We don't have a law banning these, just as we don't have a law banning hammers, screwdrivers, broken bottles, or cricket bats... but if you're carrying one with the intent to use it as a weapon it's just as illegal.

"This softie government" mate, if you want more draconian rule head to North Korea. "This softie government" hasnt changed the laws regarding carrying a deadly weapon and in fact they've published guidance to clarify what exactly you can do as "reasonable force" to protect person and property which is far more relaxed than was first thought. With that particular pen I think I'm using bevel/dna extractor end exclusively and with very hard raking shots to the face for maximum pain and bleeding. I would only train to use such a tool in one way so muscle memory takes over, and always use one or the other end and grip. You want to stop an attack fast, not parry and deflect punches... two full-power strikes to the face with the dna gouger should stop most attackers. Also, if you hit an eye with the dna gouger end, might maim but not kill, whereas the pointy end might actually kill, which you want to avoid at all costs.

I noticed that you leave your lower torso open to the opponent’s left arm, which may be holding a weapon. This exposes your liver, stomach, digestive glands, and kidney, not to mention the groin and bladder. Any puncture or internal damage in those internal organs can cause heavy infections. How would you avoid that? Also, I’d like to give a reminder that striking straight for the throat is a pretty deadly move and doing so could be morally and legally wrong. Finally, your entrance against a one-two seems somewhat weak because you’re not functioning under high-stress or even a realistic simulation of a high-stress circumstance. The opponent never just puts in two punches, and then stands there for your to counterattack. In a fight, keep it moving and keep it fast. What I would suggest you do is have a full-out fight (high-stress simulation, as much as possible) and then later on, slow down the footage and narrate exactly what you are doing and why. That would give a far more realistic presentation of combat in a stressful environment.

The guys is giving a quick video on ways to use the weapon you are expecting far too much. In his scenario the guy is clearly two fist fighting him. If the attacker pulls a knife then I'm sure his techniques and responses will change. Another foolish legal/moral argument that holds no water in real life.

I'm sorry but when it comes to survival there is no legality or morals if your gonna get killed and you stab someone through the neck and its shown you were simply defending yourself you could kill 20 men at that moment in order to survive and no court will convict you because you killed to preserve your own life there is no morals or legality it was either you were gonna live or you were gonna die it is literally that simple there is no "oh that guy just did something illegal by pulling that deadly knife out" idk if you have ever actually stabbed someone in self-defence but I have and in the moment your not thinking what the consequences can be your thinking fuck fuck fuck fuck and everything you do then runs on instinct so your legality and moral argument simply doesn't hold up there is no morals when it comes to survival it is either you survive or you die also I rather be judged by 12 people on a jury then carried in a coffin by 6 or are you gonna go on about how it's morally wrong to kill someone even if they pulled out a knife or gun? If yes then I guess you would rather lay in a coffin and have your mother or father or someone you're close to in your family carry you to the hole in the ground

Training with a non compliant partner who is reactionary & resistant and not co operating is probably best, BUT it has to be with strict control. But trouble with RBSD is it can get a bit ridiculous & out of hand. Tim Larkin's Target Focus Training would have to be hands down the best training for self protection out there. Especially for minimal injuries. I trained with them for years without one injury. What's the point of an injury if you're out of action for weeks or more, and whatsmore, if youre attacked in that time & you've got say a sprained ankle you have severe limitations in your ability at that time to defend yourself. So, TFT makes so much sense.

Good sequence practices... However, for a more aggressive street fight... Be more aggressive and explosive. Don't worry about form...but do take note that you do not want your heads too far away from your face. You throw a jab get your hands right back to the sides of your face as quickly as possible. Never throw a jab and leave your hands lowered or too far away from your head because that opens you up for an easy counter. In the streets, that's. Called a lucky ouch because most of these guys aren't that technical. They throwing their hands at targets they feel they could hit and some of these guys just throw random haymakers at your head anyway, while hoping they connect.....Moreover, Focus on force while controlling your emotions. Ideal use of this pen is more on the element of surprise spectrum. I'd keep it in a front pocked AMD clipped so that in case I'm in a situation that is critical, such as a head lock, choke hold, or any kind of disadvantage i would whip out the tac pen and go to work. Ideal points for this pen are soft slots, neck, eyes...etc Don't think or assume one strike with this pen will put your opponent down. Plan to do multiple strikes with it in a single sequence. That means, do not stab and then step away, only to try to stab again. No, but instead do a flurry of stabs even if you caught them good. Trust me... Street fights are way more aggressive and less professional than what you see in movies or in the octagon.

Exactly. I hear some say its not realistic, but that might be the blocking shown and against a street fighter. I got it. Nothing demands that you do it like shown. Great video, learned a lot. This video made me subscribe. I have had one of these for a while on my keychain, and I really enjoyed this video. I really like the idea of using this on their hand, arm, or shoulder. You never know what the situation may be, and I don't like to assume that the situation is always going to be kill or be killed. Sometimes the situation might just be to get a beer bottle out of their hand and make sure they can't use that hand any more. On a side note, I think that when someone has a weapon it seems to me that priority number one is to address the weapon. I would have liked to see you give pointers on defending against someone with a weapon, like a gun.

Love how he goes for the throat. There’s a life sentence right there. First three rules of a fight: run, run, run. Don’t be a tough guy with an ego. Talking down a situation or removing yourself from it is always the first choice; if you are physically attacked and cannot get out of it then anything is permissible (but don’t kill anyone - hard to tell you Americans that with your love of guns though).

You have to make a “value” decision if you see the need for use of the tactical pen. I think it depends on if you believe your life is actually threatened. The first “blow” to the neck or solar plexus will likely bring down your attacker. The SECOND blow will likely be fatal. If practiced as the instruction video above, it takes very little time or strength to administer the SECOND blow. I think if I would have to use it, after the attacker went down I would stop. If you reach down to strike them while they are on the ground in front of you, and you strike them anywhere on the face or neck, the chances of that being fatal are over 80%. If bystanders witness you doing that, it may lead to manslaughter or murder charges against you. This device is not a toy. Sanjosemike (no longer in CA)

Spoken like someone who has no idea what they are talking about..."just throwing punches' One punch can end a life, I've seen it many many times. just google search. People get hit and fall down wrong and crack their head on the pavement. You also don't understand how punching and blocking/jabbing works but I'll clue you in. It takes more effort and more time to throw a punch then it does to raise your one forearm and block, then counter jab. You've also obviously never been in a position where you had to defend yourself, because you don't, and shouldn't consider bullshit like that. You don't know what someone is capable of or their true intentions and you fight to live. The old saying has a real reason behind it. Better to be judged by 12 than carried by 6.

Blaine Chapa relax. By your reasoning, every time you get into a fist fight you should stab the person in the neck. It would seem YOU have never been in a fight/had to defend yourself..... unless you've been killing each of your opponents (by your reasoning, not mine).

What I'm saying is if you have to use a weapon to defend yourself, you use it. You don't get to call time out and google the rule book to X or Y scenario. Unfortunately I have had to defend myself and it isn't pretty or fun for anyone and certainly nothing to brag about. Yes, if you feel the need to attack somebody, you should be prepared to deal with the consequences up to and including the potential of death. Like most people I have a family and people that depend on me and I will do what I have to to make sure I make it home for them. That's not to say I think people should go into a self defense WANTING to end someones life, because life is a beautiful thing. Maybe the attacking person/ drug addict/ mentally inflicted/ angry person will turn a page in their life and positively influence the world and it would be unfortunate to deny that.

Would have been nice to show the footwork and balance for the cross you demonstrated, I know it seems to be obvious but so many novices plant their feet and thus lose balance, power and impetus. I noticed at 3mins you said "cover that arm" I'm sorry but if I have just blocked that punch I have no need to cover that arm your attacker isn't able to strike you as quickly or effectively as what you can from that position the whole covering of the arm seems unnecessary and pointless from that position but hey what do i know? I'm some random guy on the net with 10yrs of martial art experience and making sure to cover the arm is taking your focus away from the danger of your attacker in a fight you never want to divert your attention away from your attacker until he is incapacitated don't teach people to make sure they cover an arm after they just successfully blocked an oncoming attack its funny how we NEVER see that in MMA i wonder if it has to do with not working? But oh no I'm sure a self defence video isn't gonna be wrong at all i mean it makes perfect sense to pause for a brief moment to cover the arm you just successfully blocked and deflected away from you and not just go for the kill shot after successfully blocking Edit: i need to ask do you actually know what your talking about? Do you actually teach this shit for a living? If i grabbed someone's arm in a fight the way you tell us to cover the attack I'm sorry the attacker can just get there arm back from the undersided grip if you went over the top your taking the dominant position i wonder why it's called that hmmm? Maybe because if you were on top the person would have no choice but to pull there arm down and away from there face and guard stance? Anyone with just 2yrs of martial art experience will tell you the same you never want to put your hands under your opponents arms cause you give them the mechanical advantage and all this i noticed literally just before the 3min mark that is a pretty major flaw to have so early in the video there are in fact very few blocks and moves that require you to block or grab the person on the underside of there arm maybe the reason these moves aren't taught as a whole across nearly all martial arts is maybe because it doesn't work? The move you show at 2:58 would be a lot more effective if you had your hand on the top of your opponents elbow not below Re-edit: that second combo NO it doesn't flow you have to pause briefly to think about the action you have to block then bring yojr arm back towards you just so you can extend it out and stab the person? So i have to extend my arm to block and take my arm awaway from my body then recoil it back to my body to extend it again to stab them in the neck? Wouldn't it be easier to drive that pen into there chest since your already set up for that particular move? You clearly know this is bullshit why are you even teaching this? Oh and the X pattern cokes from Filipino martial arts? No that's wrong lol that's simply wrong lol Kung Fu has been using that block in there forms for 1500yrs i used to do White Crane Kung Fu and that is a much older style then Filipino martial arts lol it is also one of the first moves you learn

@Yul Hubbart except you can use any tool of opportunity to defend yourself. You can't carry a deadly weapon but if you grab a bottle and stab someone in the head with it in self defence that can still be considered reasonable force. Plus courts are heavily lenient on the definition of reasonable as it's recognised it is nearly impossible to determine it when under extreme threat. Just like the pensioner here recently who grabbed a kitchen knife and stabbed that robber who died. Released without charge due to it being done in self defence.

good luck trying to stop someones punches like that you'll just get knocked out. Street fights tend to include more looping strikes and occur in rapid succession. This advice will get someone seriously hurt or worse. Best advice for using a tactical pen? Either run away or if you can't strike as suddenly, violently and to the weakest parts of their body (eyes are a good place to aim). Potentiall getting close to the attacker by holding onto their head with both your arms and pulling down (look up thai plum or muay thai clinch) and then aiming for vital organs while you're holding them with one hand may work if you have a bladed tactical pen
