Kapchorwa is home to Uganda's best endurance athletes.
Our first Olympic gold medallist was John Akii-Bua in 1972 in then 400 metre hurdles. This is a link to a fantastic documentary of his life and achievement: • The John Akii-Bua Stor...
40 years later, Stephen Kiprotich won the marathon in London 2012 and got Uganda's second gold medal. He inspired our current generation of athletes including the likes of Joshua Cheptegei, Peruth Cheumtai and Jacob Kiplimo. He was also the driving force to establishing training back home, here in Kapchorwa, Uganda.
In this video I interview three marathoners who share their careers and training.
Enjoy!

Another obstacle that John Akii-Bua had to overcome was that he ran the Munich final in lane 1, which meant he had to run tighter turns than the other runners. But that didn't stop him from winning the gold medal AND setting a new world record of 47.82, a time that would be still be very competitive today. Yes, Uganda has long produced fantastic running talent. In 1973, when I was an 18-year-old high school student, I had the good fortune to train twice with Lucas Oloo, who was then running for Spokane Falls Community College in the U.S. As I recall, we did a long run on a Sunday morning with some of the top Spokane-area runners, including Ireland's Danny Murphy, who was competing for Washington State University at the time. And the next day, we ran 6 x 800m intervals on the Spokane Falls track. I think Lucas averaged around 2:15 and I around 2:20. I was completely dead after the Sunday run, but Lucas seemed fine. He ran with such amazing fluidity and power. Lucas won everything at the community college level for the next two years and went on to run for Oregon State University. I sometimes wonder where he is now. I hope life has treated him well.
