I love doing the quilt as you go method. It's nice for those of us who don't like to quilt the whole thing at the end and don't want to or can't afford to have someone quilt it for us. Plus when you finish the block, and put the rows together, the quilt is done and you just need to put the binding on. 😊

My memory is so bad. With almost 600 videos I guess it’s easy to forget that I did a QAYG herringbone quilt series 🤣. I have a booklet from Sewing With Nancy that shows how to QAYG in columns. I’ve always thought that doing the quilting in columns might be fun. Then I could try quilting feathers without having to maneuver an entire quilt. I’ve also noticed that the QAYG process has changed over the years too. There’s more options than just hand sewing a short sashing strip between the blocks.

This is the only video I could find to make a hexy into a block. Thank you I had an idea. What if you took your background color and added strips to the 4 sides where you would have added the triangles. Keep building those sides as if you were just enlarging the hexy. Then cut it down to a square block. Like you did with your first block.

I think that would work great. It would be like the other block but instead of adding random fabrics you’d add your background fabric after a certain point. Give It a try and see if you like It. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for another fun video. I am looking forward to a Quilt As You Go version. If I look to the right of my sewing machine, I spy the Block 4 of the Nebula BoM that I just finished sewing. It has hexagons sewn to equilateral triangles sewn together to make bigger triangles that are then sewn together to make 60° diamonds blocks. That goes with you saying that not all blocks in a quilt need to be square. 😉😀 This quilt top will have NO Y seams and none of the blocks are square! 👍

I spy a couple of your fabrics in my stash - a 'light bulb' moment haha. I worked out why the block is not square (I think). Place the hexagon middle piece with the straight line at the top and bottom. The width of the piece is wider point to point. The depth of the piece is shorter straight edge to straight edge. That's why the 4 sides don't all finish the same size and needs extra fabric on 2 sides. Hope you get what I'm saying :)
@rsislandcrafts3 жыл бұрын
I do. I also wonder if my original larger hexagon was printed properly. After seeing how easy It was to print the smaller one wrong and not notice I wonder if the larger one is off too. Printing from my phone isn’t always the best plan. Another example of why we need to make a practice block first before cutting up all of our fabric for an entire quilt. I also have a tickle of an idea floating in brain that might help. We’ll see when I do the QAYG version. Thanks!
@lesleygilbert19453 жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts I think no matter what size hexagon you start with the result will be the same. Try starting with an octagon - might be something to try, adding pieces on opposite sides, working your way round haha - just an idea I had :) :)

@lynnebaldwin43053 жыл бұрын
I spy = Thank you Robin
@shireetropix63603 жыл бұрын
I believe she's used a 5x7 rectangle in order to accommodate width of side overhang PLUS the 1.5" strip. You didn't allow for that when you were talking about how she'd come up with that measurement for the rectangle and asked if anyone knew the formula. The interior angles of a hexagon are 120 degrees each so you need a 60 degree triangle to fill the gap. This forms a total of 180 degrees which is a straight line. The instructions are quite simple as you really do need to just sew them on in the same way you would stitch Flying Geese which has a similar look when constructed. Sometimes it's harder to think in in terms of a circle rather than a square because we are quilters rather than avid EPPers :) It's important to leave at least a full 1/4" seam on those setting triangles so I would re-set the triangles rather than cut anything off. I spy a lady who now understands (maybe) lol
@rsislandcrafts3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Shiree. You provided a very good description of how those triangles work. 🦩

Robin, Watching your video, I believe you made a substantial mistake. Those triangles should not be arrange to match the middle of the triangle with the middle of the hex. You should have matched the top of the triangle with the top of the hex, on right side, sew it, match the triangle on the left side, sew it, and then, turn the block around (180degree) and do exactly the same on the bottom part of the hex. After sewing and trimming you end up with a horizontal line on the top and bottom, and a lot more estate of triangles on the side to use for seam allowance. At this point you attach the horizontal strips on top and bottom. Hope my explanation was good enough for you to understand. Best wishes and thanks for all your videos. You do a great job with the details 👍🥰

@gigiontube Жыл бұрын
@@rsislandcrafts YW ! Suggestion: you can cut a piece of fabric the size of the hex, and only 2 triangle to try and see how this works for you. Just sew the triangles on the top part of the hex to make a test block. If you like, you can do the other triangles and use the block somehow…
