@@josphineogugua It depends. I presume the exception you highlight is like this: This rule is that you can have dual nationality if you are married to a dutch national. Technically, say Chike gets citizenship first (he is required to renounce Nigerian nationality), You can then obtain Dutch Nationality while retaining the Nigerian nationality. eventually Chike can claim his Nigerian Nationality again since you would have become Dutch. ANYWAYS, I hear there are intentions to allow dual nationality for 1st gen immigrants. 2nd gen will have to choose a side under that proposal.

Being in Australia, I've been told 1000's of times to go back where I come from and for one reason only - I'm too direct and straight forward - it's really weird. Homesickness will kick in at times, especially during illness or death of family back home, it's only normal. If you decide to go back home with your PhD and use your knowledge there, don't see anything wrong with that either. You experienced Dutch culture and from what I can see you have been a positive member of Dutch society (and your hubby and little one) - just choose what's right for you and your family, that's what counts in the end.

Not sure where you live but there still are Christian elemetery schools in the Netherlands (mainly in the bible belt I think bnut you can check in your area). I was raised with no religion but our "general" school had the option to have one hour every 2 weeks to hear some bible stories (it was every week but one week there was a priest the other week a "Father" (not sure if that is the correct translation for pater). I went to both as I was a curius child. After a year my parents asked me how I felt on the topic of religion, my reaction was that I had critical questions that got very lame answers so I dropped off but I have always had quite a few friends with different believes and always had the atmost respect for them as long as they respected my non-believe in the whole topic. On that topic, ourr culture is still soaked with Christain values (unfortunately imho). Take the holidays, mariage and the Christian parties in our ministerie (although we state in our law that there should be a devide between religion and state). But the roots and indoctrination of the church go deep and it's a hold over from the middle ages. The problem most families could encounter bringing up kids in a different culture is that the two start to clash. Most of the time is the lack of the parents understanding the Dutch culture. That is why learning the language, and trough that the Dutch culture, is the most improtant thing for parents to do. If that happens you get much richter kids who value their heritage culture and the one they are raised in (in this case Dutch) and I think they are better for it.

Hi Segun, It depends on the reason for your stay, if it’s for work, it takes 5 years. If it’s for study or a few other reasons, it could take up to 10years, it really depends. I think you can get most of the details from the Dutch immigration website.

If you're afraid your kids won't grow up with religion, you can look into churches, mosques, synagogues, and other houses of worship in your area. Most will welcome you and your children to learn more about their religion. Your children are free to believe what they believe, and are allowed to talk about it. To us, religion is a personal choice, and shouldn't be forced or denied simply because of someone's disagreement. We may not talk about it a lot, but there are many religious communities in the country, and I've never heard of even one denying people from learning more about them.

it's only a choice in NL and such countries. but when you move out of tollerance you get into indocutrination countries like black ones with religion, spanish with religion and so on. You should know that people from different backgrounds are usually not good at changing culture which is why they bring it along. That includes indoctrination of religion. All black communities indoctrinate with religion and slavery issues from 400y ago. thats their culture to never let go and to continue the negativity under a banner of fighting for equality.

Could I get details about the process on how you moved to the Netherlands. I'm married to a Zambian and we have a child together and I want know what the process is because from what I have seen the only way is to do the Dutch inburgeringscursus which means she would need to learn Dutch. HiJosephine ! Many people who feel wronged by somebody feel the need to say something that really hurts . And when such people see that the wrongdoer has a dark skin something that hurts is easily found. But that does not mean ALWAYS that it it has racist grounds. But it is still offensive and bland of course.

Citizenship. The trick is that one of you have to change to dutch citizen ship, and then after a while the other can request citizenship without renouncing on the base of spousal citizenship. Oh and for Dutch citizenship you need to have at least a certain level of fluency in Dutch language.

I have only WAEC, (secondary school certificate) can I be allowed to live and work then further my education later. I don't mind taking the citizenship as long as am allowed to visit my parents here in Nigeria.

You can just practice your faith here, there are churches and schools in all towns and villages. You just don't have much choice if you choose this, but discuss the options with the members of the Church. There is also a church service on TV on Sunday, so faith is also present here. I am an atheist, after my catholic upbringing, and also took my children to catholic and public schools. Now they have made their own choice.

Very nice video! About letting your children grow up with religieus values: you can choose this part of the society if you want to. Join a church community (you probably did that allready), but also for children you can choose a religieus school, from their 4th year of age untill they are 18. And even some HBO opleidingen are christian. You can find sportsclubs and other activities within the christian community. For me the nice thing about living here, is that it is a choice. I didn't want my children to go to a christian school (had a very bad experience myself), so i chose a public school. But in this society as a whole, i think you might be right about the christian values, that is not so abundant. I would not know in what country it would be? The USA maybe?

Hi Jane, The house scarcity is still an issue especially I’m the Randstad area of the country. But outside these areas, accommodation is fairly easier to get. Also if you’re coming to study, schools can help provide accommodation if you apply on time.

We left the Netherlands after foolish corona measures in 2020-2022 from lying government conspiring with silenced media outlets. This society is sustainable broken and so we left. Sold everything and moved to Curaçao were we could buy a very nice house with solar panels and batteries. So no more mortgage payments and energy bills... Summer all year round and the most beautiful beaches downhill. But the best thing: retirement at 59 yo in stead of 67 yo plus 3 months...

You are such a sweet lady, but one thing must be said: Nobody really "needs" a religion. Growing up your child in a Religious way in an Non-Religious country does not make it any easier for your kid. Your personal religious interest, for all this matters, is of minor importance. And religion is personal; very personal, even for you. By introducing the religion and subjecting your child to it, you create an extra barrier to your child's future in this country. The fact that you were raised religiously in a religious country is up to that point, but that doesn't mean you should raise your child religiously in a non-religious country. You are not making things easier for you kid. You should be able to provide your kid an upbringing with the 10 commandments in a non religious way, on which our local norms and values and our legislation is based up on. By making your kid a religious person you are going to make him an outcast in a non religious society in which the very vast majority is non-religious in a very convincing way. Religion is often being rejected, that also goes for religious people. Please don't do that... I understand that you want best for your kid, but providing him with a religion is not going to help your kid...

To answer your last question: no, if they follow the Dutch curriculum. In the higher classes English is taught as a subject at most primary schools. But in the bigger cities there are English/American/international schools where all subjects are taught in English.

I remember having a conversation about religion with my extremely religious (reformed protestant) chief. He asked me "how can you, as an atheïst, have any values?" It was one of the most offensive remarks I have ever had in my life. So, I replied "I probably have 99% the same values as you, only I don't have bronze age stories and iron age stories from afar underpinning it, I just think for myself and I know what is good for the community, family, and individuals. And I come mostly to the same conclusions as you". I had that same incling with your remark about you fearing that your child would not be religious. I put it bluntly to you in the Dutch direct way: Would being not religious make your son a lesser human being in your view? If not, why are you worried about it? If so, can you underpin your argument with examples?

the topography is that of a delta, the Netherlands is a cultivated mud plain, which is why it is flat, the subject of religion in the Netherlands is clear, yes you have the freedom of belief and religion, but in Dutch culture religion a private matter it is not a public issue, you will see few expressions of faith and talking about it publicly is not desired.

I really do not understand. Why would you not want your child to grow up in a country where there is freedom of Choice of religion for your child, but chooses for a coutry that dictates religion? Your comment I think stems from a lack of understanding of what I meant in this video. My point in this video is that as an ‘intellect’ who was also exposed to a culture where religion was openly discussed, I had to chance to choose for myself what to believe. But being raised in a culture where religion is not even discussed doesn’t expose you to that choice. The problem is you see your culture as one where people have freedom of religion, but what you haven’t even realized is that, that statement in itself isn’t true. If religion is treated as a plague, most children would not want to be associated with it at all, not by choice but inherently by culture.

I'm all for the Dutch nationality to be exclusive so no second nationality on the side and that's basically the idea in our constitution. What I do not agree on is making exceptions for some nationalities and not for others. In Nigeria you have the christians and muslims fight, even kidnapping each other and killing each other. If you want to call that moral and values that's up to you? It's actually the opposite. They don't have the same god, religious morals and values, so they fight. We don't since we are majority atheist. Just obey the law and you can be religious at home all you want.

Wowww BOS. I'll highly recommend you watch less TV and news, cos your conclusions sound very western, single minded and permit me to say ignorant. Wars, fighting and disagreements exist in all societies including Nigerian, Dutch and European societies. How this should affect my decision to be religious and the right to express my views is what I don't get.

That's what I mean actually. It's not believing in your special imaginary friend in the sky that causes wars. It's demanding others believe the same as you do.
