One of the other curious events, in relation to Dennis Fong... was at the Human Ingenuity Tournament. I was about to beat Dennis 2 games out of 3... I won the first game, was in control of the map in the second game (I was an RA camper) and "mysteriously" one of his employees turns off the server and says "oops." We go into the third round and Dennis spawns at the 100 health RL on DM6 and I spawn at the Green Armor... anyone that knows DM6 knows I was screwed... he ran 100H RL and RA RL off of the spawn and there was nothing I could do about it. I played for a bit, then quit out and conceded that round. He stands up and announces to everyone at the tournament "I'm warmed up now." We go into the fourth game in the best out of 3 tournament at Dennis Fong's company HQ on his company computers and his company network and I proceed to beat him again. The look on his face said it all... he had never been beaten. Beyond that, I was the lead player of both the CTF and CA teams on his team "Legends." My roomates and I were the ones that provided the venue for the Legends BBQs at our house... Dennis did NOTHING for Legends. I do not even remember him playing with us, nor being at any of the bay area tournaments other than the HI tournament, which he lost to me. I am sickened by the misrepresentation of Dennis's supposed role in Quake tournaments. He was never there... this was the only tournament he "won" and as you can see from the recordings, it does not even look like he was doing the aiming. -LGD-WhiteWolf

There is a third curious incident related to Dennis Fong. At the finals of the E3 Red Annihilation tournament... one of the finalists, LGD-Pookie, the only pro female gamer at the time. Comes up to me and says "Dennis made me cry." I asked her what happened and she said he yelled at her when she lost her round. I did not say anything to Dennis, but I wish I had... Pookie's boyfriend at the time was Dennis's brother and I could not figure out why she did not tell him. Maybe she did not feel safe doing so... but to this day I still wonder what is wrong with this guy.
@kevinedwinmelby99384 жыл бұрын
The fourth curious incident in relation to Dennis Fong. Was after the Red Annihilation tournament... where Dennis decides he is going to end "Legends" and start "Death Row." He calls me at the time and says he is not going to invite me to "Death Row"... I asked him why... seeing as how I was the best player on Legends and the one that was contributing the most, even going so far as to host the Legends BBQs at my house. He claims that "Geiger said we do not want people that talk shit on the team." So Dennis proceeds to invite Geiger to be on Death Row, who was not even in the running for being a professional gamer. He never won a tournament and was not considered by any of us to even be a good player. He was just someone that showed up at the Legends BBQs (because he lived locally) and tried to act like he was a big man or whatever. Geiger actually physically assaulted me at one of the Legends BBQs that everyone saw and I wish in hindsight, that I had called the police. This guy was running a news group grabber in the same house as his 2 or 3 year old daughter and his beautiful wife. When I consider the fact that Dennis stood up and talked shit at his own tournament, then yelled at the only female gamer in Quake history that I know of and made her cry... I think about his excuse and the fact that he hid behind someone that was actively downloading all sorts of illicit material from the internet and also assaulted me. I can only imagine his actual motives... after all this he went on to hire all of the friends that I had in the tech industry to "Gamers.com" and did not hire me. I honestly believe everything that he did was in an attempt to bury the fact that he had lost to me and was not actually the best Quake player.

@kevinedwinmelby99389 жыл бұрын
No... I was one of the professionals in this generation of quake and never saw anything even remotely like this. Also the single player version of the game has auto aiming enabled, have you tried that shot in a multiplayer game? I dont have quake 1 anymore.
@SFuruli9 жыл бұрын
Yes, it's been primarily in multiplayer games, but it can't be the QW version of Quake. In the DOS version the rockets seem to follow a grid. However, it's actually easier to notice this grid when shooting with the Thunderbolt, because its beam also follows the same grid. I don't have Quake myself anymore, so I can't test it unfortunately. Me and my friends talked about this a few times, like "I couldn't make the shot because the rocket flew out to the right of my crosshair". And I'm seeing it in this video. I know I saw it very clearly at a point in this video. I'll find the time again and post in my next comment.

Kevin Melby Here we go, 05:08. Last rocket fired before getting Yellow Armor. Flies out to the left of the crosshair. Just like the rocket you mention at 05:28. I don't know what version they're playing in this demo, but I can see rockets following a grid in many of his shots throughout the demo.
@kevinedwinmelby99389 жыл бұрын
Yeah that's what im saying though, this was primarily a single player auto aim feature. I dont remember rockets ever doing this in multiplayer no matter how many demos I watch.

I know he invented WASD. But I still to this day use SDF and right mouse button to walk forward. I believe I copied my uncles controls when I was young and he said the control set up came from Sujoy another great Quake player. Also I play Inverted as well:)

lol, people have been using WASD since Doom days.

Yea you are right. It was actually before Doom I believe. But it was popularized by Thresh and Quake1 is what i meant to say.

It was the first tournament and just happened that Thresh had taken his training to a whole other level that anyone else. The guy got destroyed but he must have been the best of the competition.
@sovereignmind68224 жыл бұрын
Thresh was just that much better than the rest at the time. Its not uncommon to have dominating players in a new competitive scene, Ken from the early Melee days is another prominent example. This was during the first couple years of Quake and competitve gaming itself was even new at the time so it doesnt surprise me that you would have those few people that take it far more seriously than the general community.

I am 45 years old and I can vouche that Tresh was a Da Vinci of fps games. He would have sent Shroud to never never land for sure.
@purebaldness3 жыл бұрын
Hard to know for sure. The bigger a sport gets, the more talent it attracts. It could be argued that Thresh was a big fish in a small pond compared to the competition in FPS titles today, namely CS and QC. Not to say he wasn't playing against the best at the time - he obviously was, but rather, the best may not have been playing Quake to begin with, or were even gaming. I hope I'm making sense. I'm just trying to play devil's advocate. I don't follow shroud and certainly not CS, but from what I understand he ate most CS pros for breakfast, just like Thresh did. I wish Thresh stuck around for Quake 3 because that is when things really started to kick off IMO.

Didn't know that people used texture packs back than.
@blehmeh98895 жыл бұрын
It looks like this is a demo that was recorded, and then played back on a source port in the future with texture packs. Still though, it's interesting that people had texture packs for this game in 2009.

@@blehmeh9889 i mean Id Software basically invented and popularized the idea of customizing and modding games. Their games have always had a huge modding and custom community not to mention Quake is a top tier, legendary game so I'm not at all surprised that people were still playing and modding the game in 2009. I wouldn't even be surprised if there's still an active, albeit small, community today.

ID software deffo need to get back to this Quake era and forget about RAGE style gameplay. Quake one and three defined 1 vs 1 FPS, and there's been nothing since.

The new Rage 2 with a more more clear Borderlands style(-ish) is nice. Unfortunately I think this 90s style FPS is a thing of the past. It was a baby of its time. There is Toxikk today though.

Snetmot Nosrorb Toxikk isn’t too good, gets boring quickly IMO. More like UT clone than Quake. Even Quake Champions is better, and more maps too.

Quake 1 was not as faced paced as Quake II or Quake III or Unreal Tournament, it has nothing to do with the gamers here, it's just how the game was designed.
@haelsoprofeten5 жыл бұрын
I know I am answereing to a 5 year old post, but whatever :p It's exactly the opposite - Quake 1 is still a much faster game than any of the games you mentioned. It just wasnt the case in the early competetive scene. Look for quake matches just a year or two later and you will see matches on a whole other level.
@sovereignone19005 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Quake 1 and Quake Champions: Doom Edition might be the most fast-paced FPS games ever made (the later is actually a highly professional Doom mod).
