I took my dad fishing at age 70,he used to take us when we were kids but he never fished.I bought him a heavy duty rod and real and he reluctantly went.Set him up for gar.That day he caught a 6 foot gar. His 80 now and told me he has never had that much fun in his life.He is hard core fisherman now.☺☺☺

My first shark was a bonnet head, and it was only about 18" long.
@tbobtbob3304 жыл бұрын
@Edward Plitt There are 3 types of hammers commonly caught in gulf waters: greater, scalloped and bonnet head. Greater can get enormous and can be aggressive, scalloped are smaller but still pretty big, and bonnet heads, which are far smaller and have heads shaped more like a shovel than a hammer.

Sweet trip to the surf. That bonnet wasn't on the before winter bucket list but she's a beauty. Pro-tip from a knowledgeable amateur, epoxy on some white or yellow thread to your rod (at for example 20", 30" and 40") to quickly work out the size of your fish.

Years ago, when my folks had a cottage on Long Island Sound, I netted a particularly large softshell blue crab and decided to use it as striper bait for nighttime surf fishing. I tied it onto the hook, cast it out, and before long I caught..... not a striper, but the biggest damn eel I'd ever seen. Turnabout is fair play, as they say, and since we often used a chunk of eel as bait for blue crabs, this particular eel must've thought it had a chance to even the score. Unfortunately for the eel, sauteed eel tastes really good in my opinion, so....

I'm originally from San Antonio and my buddies and I would drive down to Port Aransas back in the day and fish the surf all around the Horace Caldwell pier and down the beach towards Big Shell. We would catch BIG Bull Reds using live crabs for bait out past the third sandbar. Especially in the fall during the annual run. I'm talking 30+ pound fish! Those were the days!

The methods and style of surf fishing in this video are almost exactly the same style and methods that we use here in South Africa. Check out some of surf fishing for species such a steenbrass, kabeljou and Garrick. Also check out how we use crab to catch a fish called muscle cracker or silver steenbrass.

At 8:50, that's barely a bluefish. At that size we call them Harbor blues, or Tailors; just a size or two up from snapper blues. Even at that size, they do sport a vicious set of chompers (wire leaders are a good idea, even when fishing for stripers, because the blues will take so much of your gear if you don't use wire). ! When I was a kid up here in New England we used regularly catch 6 to 8 pounders ( at that size they're not so oily and make decent eating; but smoked bluefish is much better). One year they were averaging 12 to 14 pounds!. Hook one of those on fairly light gear and it's like grabbing a tiger by the tail.

Man good job..but holding him vertical displaced his vital organs and he most likely died a few hrs later. I learned this the hard way by catching and releasing 6 bull reds in a small bay and coming back the next day seeing them all floating around dead. Florida game and fish has a research study on holding big fish vertical, you'll have to Google it.

Nice Drum - you need to add casting reels to your surf set up. Get yourself a Fathom 12 or 15 and you won't have to wade out anymore. You will be able to cast way past those spinning reels without getting waste deep in the water.
