Very interesting and great video. Do you think Teppei thought about voice leading and chord inversions when writing 'Beggars' because he wanted to keep a better stage presence or was it strictly a result of jamming? Any chance of breaking down 'promises' off of Major/Minor? Teps guitar work in that song is stellar and reminds of a lot of things you're talking about here.

Thanks! I don't think they were thinking about these specific concepts when they wrote this but I do think they were fully aware of the chord inversions to the point where they don't even think about it. But as a fan sometimes it's easy to learn to write by repeating their steps backwards, and I do that with analysis. One thing I do know thrice must be conscious of with music theory is time signatures. They use odd time signatures regularly and effectively

Not just odd time signatures. In major/minor and beggars there are two songs that Riley incorporates polyrhythms. Can you think of which two I am referring too? There is also a song on AITA that uses syncopation.

I can't off the top of my head but Thrice definitely does a lot of interesting stuff musically. Hopefully I'll do another one of these videos soon.
