To me this song is about the vicious cycle of self-gratification of an individual making the same mistake(s) repeatedly and not having the presence/peace of mind to change their course of action, or seek treatment. Ultimately, their sins and infallibility will causally and negatively affect their loved ones - whether it be spouses, siblings, or more commonly, their offspring. Pathological selfishness can be very detrimental to those exposed to it, on so many levels.

@@crisbavosi895 I mean, yeah, I do think it works on both of these levels. It's a general description of lack of self-awareness and its consequences, especially the "I don't understand why they're stinging me" line. But of course, then there's the "following me across the sea, stinging my friends and family" part, which is definitely a description of what's really going on any time an American politician is on TV talking about why we supposedly need to have our military permanently deployed all over the damn planet 24/7.

Extremely powerful. Each person driving the car, represents a different person in power, driving the next generation towards the same outcome, and not learning the lesson. Hence the line "can't understand why they're stinging me". The kids going through the field, led to make the same wrong decision as the rest, because "this time we'll get it right, gotta let it be this time.. Get it right!". Love this song, and powerful video.

It's hard to learn to be diffrent when all your ever exposed to is the same thing. Not saying you cant be diffrent but of something is learned and passed down through generations usually change happens because of an external source. My wife likes to call them generational curses. Where the mistakes of our grand parents were passed to our parents and so forth. My father was abusive physically and verbally. My mother was dysfunctional and I grew up with trust issues insecurities and a mean vile temper. When I was younger I was on the path of ending up dead or on prison. God put my wife in my life and two beautiful children who gave me a purpose. My wife has so much patience and I swear she was the gun and I was the ammo and I constantly gave her reasons to shoot me. But she never pulled the trigger. She proved to me things can be diffrent and after 22 years we are still together. My son is grown employed no kids never been to jail. Blessed my daughter is my mini version of me. And she reminds me to keep an open mind in life. Sorry good music makes you think reflect feel.

With my meds, my adhd, the declining state of society, and half of my waking hours dedicated to mindless repetitive tasks on a computer for money, I dont really feel much of anything anymore. Occasionally I might feel a shred of the dreams and ambitions of my youth flash inside my mind, but it all just fades away bit by bit everday. That energy and enthusiasm I once felt in my chest and in my soul, watching the sunset with my friends, walking the streets on warm summer nights, wondering what great adventure life had in store for me; they were just memories of what was never meant to be. But when I play this music, I feel again. The energy of those summer nights, of my destiny, they come rushing back through me. I havent wanted to sing in so long, but for the first time in years i found myself singing along. You dont know how much this song, your music means to me right here, right now at 5pm on september 8th, 2021. I know what I need to do and now, you ignite the embers that were growing cold and stoked the flames that were dormant inside me. Thank you for this gift, Thrice. Thank you.

Every time i see another broken soul in this broken world, it makes me want to change it even more, i want to change it and make everyone's dreams come true.. i want us to be part of the nature we are made of, want this life to have amazing adventures and meaninfullness for everyone... not the world slowly dying around us. No matter how i word this, it sounds hollow, but it is a daydream of mine.. depression shouldn't be something what we feel daily, it should be an exception. We are no machines. Try to focus on what you reached, look back and forgive yourself, because you always gave your best and you always chose the way which seemed best at the time. Your past self would not be sad about what you did instead of having those adventures, instead it would be proud of who you are today despite everything that happened and took your motivation and clear vision,... it is never too late, everyone has a meaning, even when it is just to have the right mindset. All those bad times will make the good times shine even brighter, they are yet to come. The spark which you feel is real. I have this spark and my past inside me as well, and after forgiving myself, the monotony faded, the meaninglessness faded, the grey world got a little bit colourful. And i see possibilities where there was hopelessness before. No one despite you yourself tells you what you have to do and how you treat yourself. Look at what you accomplished lately, with your own hands.. always keep the circumstances in mind, you, we all, we always give our best. I wish you the best. - Infy

Thank you for pointing that out! I missed that the first time I watched it several years ago. Rewatching it today I realized the people in the car can represent the people through generations who passed down t he trauma and toxic behaviors they learned to the generations after him. And how the guy in the hat "cuts the branch from the cherry tree" by facing those childhood traumas in the orchard, by acknowledging them and making the choice to do *better*.
@CrankyOldDave9 ай бұрын
@Aahzsome I always took this as an incredibly subversive political song. Mainly about the US involvement overseas and how we never get it right and it comes back to bite us in the ass. But I love how music speaks to people in different ways and there's an interpretation I'd never even considered. Cheers!
@Aahzsome8 ай бұрын
@@CrankyOldDave Yeah, it was pointed out to me more recently that it is, in fact a very pointed song about USA in conflict in the Middle East. I don't think the two are opposites though. Similar to generational trauma in a family expressing itself through abuse (sometimes differently, sometimes in the way), so too does the US keep meddling overseas! Like each generation of policy makers failing to learn from the ones before them, convinced that 'this time they'll get it right', similar to the way each generation in a family with a history of abuse may tell themselves 'this time I'll get it right' about disciplining their children or being a good partner to a spouse, etc, except they might not realize they need extra help to really avoid falling into the same tar pit.

Songs about how people hurt others to get what they want, and then don't seem to understand when the ones they hurt retaliate. Like you piss off bees to get their honey and then you complain when they sting you. You want a beautiful butterfly to display but in the process of framing it, you kill it. You act like a child, getting what you want through destructive force and not understanding the consequence. More specifically, the song was about USA foreign policy. Black honey is oil. The USA invades and meddles in the middle east and around the world then doesn't understand why we get attacked or why we are hated. The most obvious line is, "They're following me across the sea and stinging my friends and my family". Basically referring to how we meddled in other countries to get "black honey" or whatever we wanted and then they attacked our friends and family i.e. 9/11.

That's the beauty of music, regardless of what the original artist meant by their lyrics you still get your own personal perspective. I just love how music helps you come to certain realizations, puts your thoughts into words when you couldnt and slowly but surely things finally start coming to light, seemingly out of nowhere. I am so thankful for music, without it I never would've grown to be the man that I am today. Much love and God bless!!

The first time I listened to this song, not catching all the lyrics, it resonated with me. Swinging my hand through a swarm of bees even though it'll hurt me, over and over again, because I deserve "the best" or, in the very least, better. That, to me, represented retaliation against mistreatment, knowing that it'll get you hurt in the end, because you love yourself and you know you deserve better. You won't stop fighting for better. And then, upon reading the lyrics in full, it almost reads like the opposite perspective. This person is childish and destructive, and they harm people for something that they feel they need (luxury, control, "honey") but they have no tact. They fucked up the bees' nest. And yet they don't understand why the bees retaliate because they're apathetic. They haven't thought about the bees, and frankly, care more for themselves than what they're destroying. Their untreated narcissism has affected innocent creatures and then ultimately their family and friends. People they love. One commenter pointed out the interpretation that this song is about the USA's relationship with the Middle East. "Black honey" is oil, and people are too blinded by nationalism to figure out why there's retaliation. What adds to that interpretation is the video, where a young boy is told this story over and over, angrily, by people much older than him. An angry old man, a father maybe, a blonde woman. They teach him this nationalism so repetitively and so matter-of-factly that he begins repeating it himself. It mirrors experiences a lot of young people have had, where their older relatives tell them what to believe. That's scary. All that being said, I'm not from the US and can't really comment further on that interpretation of this song
@The1WithoutFear Жыл бұрын
I truly admire and respect your take on this song's underlying themes and presentation! Personally, as a Christian, I always took this to be a retelling of the story of Samson, ancient Israel's worst judge (and, as my youth pastor put, "the life well wasted"). He was chosen by God before he was even born to be a Judge of Israel (which, in terms of biblical narrative and Mosaic law) meant that you were among one of the most revered individuals in the country. You were responsible for the preservation of God's text, and handing out righteous and authoritative justice on the people who revered God. He was also the guy who, at every opportunity, screwed it all up. He married a woman from a culture that didn't revere the God of the Israelites, and during his wedding feast, gambled away the clothes of 300 men; only to turn around and burn their houses to the ground by tying torches to the tails of foxes and letting them loose. He then broke one of God's laws that he was taught to protect by eating honey from the stomach of a lion he had killed a few days ago (which, the titular Black Honey may be referring to - honeycomb stained with coagulated blood). He murdered an entire battalion of men with the jawbone of a donkey just because he knew he had the physical strength to do so, with complete disregard for the political consequences of killing the soldiers of a neighboring hostile empire. Next, as my youth pastor put it, he was so bad at his job as a judge of Israel that the author of the Book of Judges was instructed by God to not jot anything down from the time of the slaughter to the time Samson met Delilah! And of course, most familiar with this Bible story knows where it goes from there - Samson (presumably) slept around with Delilah, was wooed by her into giving up the secrets to his colossal strength, and was then shaved and blinded (which I think is what the singer is mirroring during the bridge of the song - his helplessness and vulnerability, FINALLY turning his blinded eyes to the Lord for what seems like the first time in ages). .....Only for his ego to once again strike as he brings down the temple the heathenous Philistines had built with his bare hands using strength he never thanked God for, and dying in the process, leaving the era of the Judges of Israel at an unfulfilled end prior to the time of Ruth, King David, King Solomon, and the Babylonian exile - hence why the song ends so unfulfillingly, with the singer sounding as though he has ultimately learned nothing from where he started; sounding weaker, but nonetheless prideful and selfish. At least, that's just what I get from this song. :)

@@The1WithoutFear I like the interpretation, I also invite a deeper look into it in terms of theology and ethical philosophy This man blinded by pride was destructive in the name of his god, and each time he was, this was illustrated as something that he'd done wrong. It makes sense to me that a loving God, as god is, has no desire to see suffering in his name. To bring down a temple, a feat of strength as unnecessary as it is ridiculous

I feel like this is one of those songs where the meaning will differ from person to person, and that that's okay... I can totally understand what people mean when they say this song is about drugs, or about making mistakes... For me, it always felt like it was about sacrifice. About constantly sacrificing your own well being and happiness for friends and family, and learning who was worth the sacrifice and who was using you... So you needed it "get it right" next time. I don't think any one person is wrong or right. I think it is amazing that one song has made so many people feel so many things. That is the torch of great music.

@@grady7420 The US/West has done nothing that wasn't done by someone else first, the world over. We just do it on a grander scale than our ancestors ever imagined possible. @@cheesesteak983 For a time I swear they were. Everyone knew Artist In The Ambulance. I think what happened, is that the punk/emo/hardcore/post-hardcore scenes got so heavily saturated around the time(02-07), that when it faded out, it took a lot of bands that were just kind of scene-adjacent with them and while a lot of those bands, like Thrice, kept growing and making fantastic music, it just kind of got overlooked by the mainstream because the bankable demographic for rock music was just kind of...over the sound(in spite of how different and wonderful AI was) and had moved on to the pseudo-indie rock thing that was happening, and to a lesser extent, metalcore. And by the time this album came out, phenomenal as it is, there just wasn't going to be the marketable possibility of it hitting big as it deserved to.

I found this song by accident (think it was suggested by Spotify) and I was totally blown away by it. It completely hooked me and I absolutely love it. His voice is so gritty. Amazing.

Check out Ghost by Clutch. The gritty voice gets me. Blacktop by Colton Wall, different genre but amazing rasp. We need more music and less television in our lives in my humble opinion.

At least part of it, i think, is about how we learn the habits of those who came before us. If you notice in the beginning the boy is just sitting there while the adults lecture him, and by the end of the ride hes saying the words in unison with them. I think the glowing eye bit is just supposed to symbolize that he is still innocent and is absorbing whats going on around him. When he finally leaves the car is right when Dustin is through singing "This time I'll get it right". I think this means he's out on his own. He walks past all of his elders as if to say they're in his past, he has their memory, but they are no longer directly influencing his decisions. The last scene is in a garden to me is symbolic that a choice must be made. Fruit is only ripe for a certain amount of time until it rots..it could also reference the garden of Eden. (ultimate choice was made) In the end he walks away without his shirt. I think this symbolizes that he chose to do things differently and is stripped of the baggage of those who came before him. Someone had said earlier they thought the song was about the US' pursuit of oil overseas. I could see that. Until we break the cycle we'll just keep experiencing the same things we have in the past.

+Not Debby The stuff dripping from the lemon branch is Black Honey, it falls from certain trees but is most commonly found from the interior of certain bee hives. However I think the resemblance of it looking like Oil is no mistake.

For awhile, it felt like they set the tone for all of these major scenes during the 2000's. And then post-hardcore took waaaay off, and they said 'fuck it, let's make some slick dad rock' and they've been crushing their own niche ever since. Alchemy Index will forever be one of my favorite compilations

Lyrics I keep swinging my hand through a swarm of bees ‘cause I ... I want honey on my table I keep swinging my hand through a swarm of bees ‘cause I ... I want honey on my table But I never get it right no I never get it right I keep swinging my hand through a swarm of bees I can’t understand why they’re stinging me But I’ll do what I want, I’ll do what I please I’ll do it again till I got what I need I’ll rip and smash through the hornet’s nest Don’t they understand I deserve the best And I’ll do what I want, I’ll do what I please I’ll do it again till I got what I need I tried to stick this pin through a butterfly ‘cause I ... I like all the pretty colors But it just fell apart so I flung it in the fire to burn with all the others Cause I never get it right No, I never get it right I keep swinging my hand through a swarm of bees I can’t understand why they’re stinging me But I’ll do what I want, I’ll do what I please I’ll do it again till I got what I need I’ll rip and smash through the hornet’s nest Don’t they understand I deserve the best And I’ll do what I want, I’ll do what I please I’ll do it again till I got what I need And this time I’ll get it right yeah this time I’ll get it right It’s gonna be this time I’ll get it right Oh God let it be this time I get it right So I’m cutting that branch off the cherry tree I’m singing this will be my victory then I... I see them coming after me And they’re following me across the sea And now they’re stinging my friends and my family and I... I don’t know why this is happening But I’ll do what I want, I’ll do what I please I’ll do it again till I got what I need I keep swinging my hand through a swarm of bees ‘cause I ... I want honey on my table : )

most beautiful thing about music is that everybody has their own interpretation of lyrics, every single person is making his own picture when listening to a song. my conclusion is that he's telling about men's nature, especially if you're a "rock star", surrounded by many pretty women but men are never happy, we always think that in other's "nest" the "honey has better tasting" , we are never appreciating what we have but always think that the next one is better. men, especially famous ones that can easily have any women, like to play with their feelings, hurting them and then run away, leaving destroyed marriages and feelings. it just got me that way
