You nailed this song man. It might sound simple, but this is definitely a challenging song to learn on the drums. That part at 1:20 requires a lot practice, with that rhythmic opening/closing of the hi-hat, timed with the kicks and snare hit. Riley is one of the most underrated drummers in the rock genre (Thrice themselves are underrated too), people don't realise he writes some absolutely drum parts.

Vheissu hey thanks for watching! I agree, this song was much harder to nail than I had anticipated. The whole into beat and second verse are super tough but so fun to play once you learn them!

3:17 - how do I do that? 10 years playing by ear with no lessons has left me bloody awful when it comes to stuff I can't break down..

Hey man, that's a great question. Here's a link to notation of what I actually played for that particular fill in this video goo.gl/me7CC1 I know Riley recorded this whole album with a single pedal so the kick notes would be doubles with one foot. I used my double bass pedal in this video to make the fill sound more solid. Thanks for watching!

couple of questions. why are you using two rack toms as opposed to one, why did you tack the China off the kit, and which Evans line are you using for your heads?
@brettddrums
@brettddrums 7 жыл бұрын
Hey man thanks for the questions! I go back and forth using the 10" rack tom depending on what style of music I'm playing at the time and I use it if the musical situation that I'm in calls for it. Back when I was making these cover videos I was using it quite frequently, but currently I'm playing with just the 12" rack tom. As far as the china cymbal goes, I actually broke that around the time I was filming these videos (pretty sure it broke while I was filming my cover of Bloodmeat) and as my drumming style has started to progress away from Metal music, I haven't felt the need to replace it. Especially in the groups I am working with currently. And I'm using the Evans EC2 Hazy heads in this video.
