This song was a game changer for me. I can pretty much draw a line between a time when I wanted to die and this album, which rocked me to sleep on many a long, sweat-riddled, anxious night. It’s as much a part of my recovery as any therapy or medication. I’m alive. I know my worth.

Actually, this is exactly the same story as mine. My wife left me, lost my apartment, lost my car and then loads my job months apart from one another. And this album came along right around that time. I listened to it every night and it holds a very special place in my heart. Peace and love my friend.

What I find so incredible is the artistic and creative incorporation of the elements in these lines.. "We are wrought with breath(air) and dirt(earth), Washed in second sight (water), Woven through the earth (again), Wreathed in rings of light (fire)".

I feel like you don't quite understand what objectivity in this situation means. It is inherently damn near impossible for anyone to be objective, even with science we only aim to be as objective as possible. So, at least to my knowledge, when someone says we don't have inherent objective value above other beings what they mean is you can take on different point of views and changing the view also changes the value of beings and whether humans are the most valuable thing depends on this view you take. It doesn't mean that we as humans don't value ourselves above other things. It is quite important for the survival of species to value themselves above others. I think being able to recognize this and actually being able to realize that putting ourselves as the most important part of nature at the top of the pyramid is actually often harmful is what makes humans special. Being able to understand that our innate need for looking out for ourselves first isn't always particularly helpful for the earth/universe as a whole is a major positive in my opinion. Being told that one human is more important then all the dogs in the world sounds pretty dramatic and borderline harmful to my ears considering there are so many species on the earth that we could not survive without. It would sound strange to me to say one human is more important than one of these species even though of course as a human I am also always more inclined to protect my own. I would be very worried what kind of a message that sends as a whole to a person though, since I think this is a major issue for why we are not taking care of the earth the way we should. Hope this wasn't too messy and could be somewhat followed, wrote in a hurry but really bothered me. :)

I dont agree that for atheists value of a human being is same as value of chalk. I understand that KZbin commentary section is too small to go into debates. Just take into consideration that personally me value people very high. But for me its not because its a value given from somewhere up above. Its because I am also a human. If i was an elephant - i would value elephants more then other species. This is why when i need to save a human or a cat - i will save the human 1st. I think that Universe is so big, but there are sections where parts of it can operate. And our section, the one that we really appreciate and understand and take care only within human beings. So I dont agree that for atheists - absence of supernatural force from above equals ourselves to items or other species. Some species - like wolves are happy only with wolves. You cannot hold a wolf at home. It always wants to get back to forrest. It doesnt turn to a home pet like cat, dog, lynx or otter or fox even if you feed wolf, even if you take it as a baby and raise it at home. Wolf recognize you as a friend and he will let you be near it and touch him. But he will always go back to woods without turning back if you give it an opportunity to do so.

In an atheistic worldview, humans are no more objectively valuable than chalk, however, their subjective value varies according to the person assigning worth. One might say everyone is equally valuable because we're human, another will say it depends on what they've done, another still might say everyone is valuable but they value their family more than friends and friends more than strangers, and the last might say chalk is clearly the most valuable thing on Earth and invade a foreign country, killing thousands, for their abundant natural chalk deposits. None of them are wrong because that's what's valuable to them each subjectively, but none of those are an objective value. You could argue sapience is an objective measure of value, but then you'd have to make some sharp decisions about the cut-off point.

I do think Im the subject of chemical reactions like Sori said, but I wish I didnt see it that way. there is no poetry or magic in a life of reductionist logical existence. thrice gives me a peak into another way things can be, but I think about it as a pretty fantasy. i hate that.

Sounds like you need to take some DMT, brother. There was a time where I thought like that, but some experiences just don't make sense if that's all we are. Give to Earth what is Earth's. Your body, your emotions, impulses, thoughts, senses, all of that belongs to Earth; but the thing inside us all that observes it, the thing that makes sense of everything, doesn't belong to the Earth. It isn't physical, it isn't mental, it isn't observable, it just is, and it's beyond us. Now, it might not be what the Christians think or what the Hindus think, but it's there, and it's undeniably a mystery that we can't account for. Seriously, though, DMT lets you see what feels to be the afterlife without booking a room. 15 minutes, in and out, endogenous compound, LD-50 is absurdly high. If you want to find the soul, that's where you can look.
