I thrifted a Rainforest Cafe t-shirt. It looked boring. So I decided to thrift flip it and paint a totally rad design with bleach (this was my first time!) 🌿🐊🦧🌎 and yah, I might’ve gone to the rainforest 😌🐍
Here are some tips and tricks that I learned along the way ( + things I wish I knew beforehand and/or things I forgot to mention):
- When you first begin drawing out your design, ensure the surface is completely flat. I used a large box, but as you will see, the sleeves were dangling off the sides. It’s better to see it all laid out, and make sure there are no wrinkles!
- Wear your trashy clothes! You might be like, duh, but don’t forget - bleach isn’t erasable unless you dye it again
- When it’s time to bleach, make sure you’re in an open, well ventilated area. Get them kids and animals inside!
- Use protection! For your shirt, silly goose. Place FLAT paper bags underneath your shirt. Nobody wants a dirty tee.
- Don’t forget the inside! Unless you want your design to bleed through to the back, don’t forget this tip! Cover a large, FLAT piece of whatever material in a plastic bag and stuff that boy inside of the torso, making sure it covers EVERY square inch. I even left some hanging out from the bottom to ensure no bleeding.
- Now unless you want your design to transfer, you can’t forget about the arms. I flattened and placed a plastic grocery bag in both arm holes.
- Now onto materials and utensils. Use brushes and utensils that you don’t care for - the bleach WILL eat away at the bristles.
- Speaking of brushes, START SMALL and work your way up. Because this is fabric, the bleach will slightly bleed, so use a thin brush to start.
- Stop, take a deep breath, and relax. It’s all gonna work out (unless you forgot to test your fabric to see if it’ll take bleach! DON’T FORGET)
- Actually, take a deep breath away from the bleach 🥲 Be sure to take breaks whenever necessary! Don’t forget to guzzle water and eat some grub, this may take a while!
- Well, I think that’s about it. I wish you all the absolute best of luck should you choose to bleach paint your own wardrobe!
