Update 2021: Flaxseed oil flakes off and is trash. Don't listen to the internet.

I used Flax for a while. Its too expensive and doesn't last the best. Much better alternatives

Haha 😆 flaxseed only has a smoking point of about 220 degrees so anything beyond is just burning the oil. Try Grapeseed which has about a 420 degree smoking point or avocado oil which is 500 degrees, albeit expensive.

good ole crisco is the best I've found. 250 for 15 minutes to heat it up, slather it in cirsco and leave it until it completely cools gels on the stove top. Takes like 30-60 minutes. Then wipe ALL the crisco off. 250F again for 15 minutes. Now take the pans out and wipe more oil off. 500F upside down for at least 1 hour. Thicker pans might take 90 minutes. Repeat 3 times

@@desiriemendez Flaxseed has the highest ALA which is for the polymerization at high heat. It's science. You want it above the smoking point so the lower the better. It's the ALA content that gives you the seasoining. If flaxseed isn't working for you, you're doing it wrong.

Happy to hear you use flaxseed oil. Yes, I did catch that loosy goosey, but so happy for you. A Griswold for $8! Uh, you are using a fish spatula. I like your music.

Nice pan, good find ,, be careful with some older thinner walled pans, in an oven on cleaning cycle can get too hot and warp or crack your pans. Good Vid.

I admit it, I bit. You got me. I was thinking Wow what model of GoPro can withstand 500f ? I was totally freaking out and amazed. Good one. BTY... nice score on the skillet & great job on the refurb. No grinders or wire wheels needed, just a little elbow grease.

We use clarified butter, it tastes wonderful and gives the pan a beautiful color. Nice find, I just got a Griswold number 10 with the matching lid at a yard sale for 20.00 ! I was so excited and he had 25.00 on it and I asked if he would take 20! People have a very hard time ever finding lids they are priceless. By the way you can save your bacon grease and use that also it works just as good. Happy hunting.

Might want to look into to a lye tank, that heat is not good for the pan or oven, but nice video awesome find!

I got a 10 5/8 BSR for $2 at the thrift store. It was in pretty rough shape and needed wire wheeled and reseaaoned. But it’s one of my better cast iron pans now. A BSR isn’t nearly as collectible as some...but for $2 it was a steal.

PSA: Using the oven to clean pans is not the best method. You can warp old vintage skillets by doing this way. for one pan use yellow top oven cleaner.

How do you prevent the flax seed oil from flaking off? I did exactly what you did to my pan (I did 5 trips in the oven at 500F), however, I get black flakes that seem to "peel off" the pan.
@clickroach5 жыл бұрын
I don't have an answer for you. Haven't experienced this yet.
@mlaiuppa Жыл бұрын
You warm the cleaned, stripped pan in the oven, but not so warm you can't handle it. Apply a really thin coat of flaxseed oil with a clean cotton cloth, not a paper towel, then put it in the oven and then crank it up as high as it will go. I can do mine to 550 but as close to 500 F. When it reaches temp leave it for an hour. Then shut the oven off and don't open the door. Let it cool down for at least 2 hours. Then take it out and let it cool completely. Then warm it up and start the process again. Six times. It is the high ALA content of the flaxseed oil at high heat that provides the polymerization for the seasoning. Smoke point has to do with cooking. You don't want to eat anything made with oil that is smoking as that releases free radicals. But they are all burned off in the process of seasoning so smoke point is immaterial, except for the smell. It is the ALA content that is needed and Flaxseed oil has the highest. But you have to do it properly. Don't put it on too thick and be patient and take your time.
