When dinosaurs roamed the earth and I first started out, I had all brown stoneware. I still have a few unbroken pieces all these years later. Advance forward more years than most have been alive, I purchased all-white dishes thinking it was chic. Now I buy only from thrift stores, here and there. Much happier because I get only those dishes I really like, especially in ones or twos. Nothing matches and I'm glad to reuse what is the last of a family's treasures.

I love your explanation between a decorated home and a collected home. I think a decorated room lacks a certain warmth and welcoming atmosphere that a collected room exudes. Your home certainly does that and it's always so enjoyable to watch how you style things. The collected look is what I strive for in my home also. It is so much more personal to have things you have collected surrounding you. And a collected room makes you smile whenever you enter it. I love, love the idea of using the mixed pattern china plates instead of the plain white. So eclectic. As always, Sherry, you hit another home run with this video. Thanks for sharing!

Love the collected china idea. I've had plain white for over 10 years and I'm also tired of it. I have collections of other patterns but don't use them. The plain white goes so well in the microwave where the others have gold rims that I can't put in there. Will have to start using the others for when not putting in the microwave. Also love the painted tin and painted picture frames. The frame and basket was cute. Love the pops of pink!

I agree about Sherry’s definition of decorated and collected. I have been in quite a few decorated homes and quite honestly I could have been in a furniture shop! Nothing was personal or unique. I find that ambience so uninspiring, boring and soulless. Where are the books? The travel trinkets? The pretty corners? The interesting corners? Ughhh just leaves me cold

@user-cp7zb6yw7f I had the same issue with gold rims and gold accents on pretty china plates in the microwave so I bought some plastic picnic plates to use strictly for heating up, then transfer food items when cooked to the pretty plates. I’m always on the look out for oil paintings but I have a way to “fake” one: Use a picture you really like and apply several coats of mod podge alternating the direction of your strokes then frame it without glass! I'm also a collected home believer. The tole painting is something I also have and love! I've been collecting copper since I was first married at 20. My grandfather came to MA where his job was doing decorative metal work on trolley cars. He also made some special copper pieces for my grandmother. This love of copper was passed on to my mother, aunts and their children. I'm now 76 so you can imagine how long ago my grandparents and their first two children moved from Norway to the U.S. There's only one slight problem! I've now got so many wonderful pieces that it's become difficult to keep up with the polishing. Also I'm an artist and thrifter. I love getting inexpensive thrift store pieces and often transform them in a creative and artistic way. I now live alone with my two small dogs and so enjoy my home as you do yours. My house is too big for just me, but I'm not ready to downsize and eliminate the many interesting pieces I've collected and created during my life. Also, It would be just too much work to do so. No, I'm not a hoarder! We people who have "collected homes" have many memories just from looking around our homes. Holly

I haven’t brought any home since I’m trying to downsize not size up. Now I can get some and use as everyday dishes. Why not? It’s just us and friends for a Friday night dinner date every week. It is really funny how old things become new again. When I was growing up we were a large family and very poor. We had mismatched everything! LOL!!! I actually hated it....especially when I saw friends' homes where they actually had matching furniture...without blankets or quilts thrown over them to hide all the worn spots. They had silverware that was all one pattern! Imagine that! They didn't wear pants under their too short dresses to keep warm in the winter. All the things I vowed to change in my home when I grew up....well, now they are doing those same things.....ON PURPOSE!!! I have to admit....sometimes I am tempted.....but I stand strong....I will not go back! LOL!!!! You make things look so lovely.....but I have a feeling that some of those things, in my home, would just look like poor folks live here. Granted, I am so very far from being well off, but I don't have to live like that anymore......just my opinion, mind you.

Hello, thanks once again. My husband was home today as I was mixing a pie crust and talking to you as I watched 😂 He didn’t say a thing.Well, this describes my home as well, it explains why it has taken years too. I’m a recent empty nester I wanted less dishes in my cabinets. I decided to go with the vintage ones, they are smaller and lighter weight then my lovely pier one plates. I’m keeping my dishes stored and intend to switch as I choose. Things are mismatched but they are things we love, sometimes it’s the design, or the colors or the texture. I have a favorite booth at a local flea market where I pick up sweet pieces for $1🤗 some times they are wall decorations for a while and sometimes they’re my breakfast plate for toast. I have done the same with glasses, mugs and flatware. I’m enjoying my nesting 😉I always enjoy our visits to your home thank you for sharing, inspiring and educating us.

I thrifted some vintage bowls a few months ago, and they are so much lighter than my World Market bowls. My hubby and I started eating almost everything out of them. It was actually those bowls that made me realize I wanted to use vintage plates, too! Next on the list is pretty vintage glasses to replace my incredibly plain IKEA ones. Sherry, I definitely love the collected home much better. My mother collected mismatched china teacups and saucers. My sister and I had fun hunting for special ones for her for all the gift occasions. She displays them proudly in her china cabinet. Btw can’t wait for the next room makeover.

Thank you, Katherine! I’m excited to get started on the room makeover-it is a room that I have never shown in a video.

Good morning dear Sherry. I most definitely have a collected home as I love to thrift shop. Right now, I am in the process of downsizing as I will be moving from a 2 bedroom to a 1 bedroom apartment. So, I am shifting from farmhouse decor to dark academia which is more my vibe! I have lots of books (naturally) and I love your idea of placing some beneath the child's chair. The bird pictures with the frames painted green are so incredible! I always look forward to your videos and it's a great way to start my day. You have so many wonderful ideas!

What great finds and projects you share! I really have an appreciation for your home, it’s so cozy and beautiful. I too am a lover of a curated home. It took some time over these past 15 years but it has been a great journey for my creativity! It started in my early 30’s and also just keeping a lot of my family heirlooms and various things. I’m so happy I did! Every where I look in my home there is a memory and it looks so pretty and cozy, I love it. 💕

Also I love mix matched china. It reminds me of one of my favorite tea houses I used to go to many many years ago that sadly isn’t around anymore. I have a lot of china (my mom’s and both grandma’s, & great grandma) and I have just vowed to use it more after this past holiday season. Most of it sits packed away in boxes. I love vintage dishes and pottery but I don’t have any more room for it so I will love and use what I have. 😊

Thank you for some wonderful inspiration. Love your finds and the ways you used them, the vintage frame with the tall narrow basket was a super combination. I'm definitely feeling like re-jigging some of my collections and displays after watching this weeks Canterbury Cottage!

Wow never knew the difference of a decorated home and collective home ..I know when I walk in different friends homes, it makes you feel so welcomed and it is definitely the collective home style ..I like the collective home style, look and feel ...yes to the different print dishes...i am also tired of the plain white dishes...great video.. 🙏

Man, Sherri you found some neat items. You must have some really good thrift stores in your area. I love the creative ways you think of displaying your thrifted items - really good ideas. I like your concept of a collected home rather than a decorated home.

Thank you so much! I do have good thrift stores in my community. This time, I did travel an hour away to visit my favorite thrift stores in two different farming communities where I get great deals on vintage items.

What a wonderful video! You absolutely do look lovely! Yes, mixing the plates/designs is fun. I felt like I was depriving myself when I only had one design.🤓 I love miniatures and formerly had them in my glass door hutch and the pink you like is a great one- very likable by many. Thank you for sharing with us!
