Wow. Such a nice simple piece. Like almost all of your work, understated pieces, that get a second life, by being remembered for exactly what they were, and now are again... A nice allegory for us humans to ponder on.

Nice work. Also, I like your humble and abrupt "thanks for watching" endings. A breath of fresh air from self indulgent videos with a hundred before and after shots and too much self-congratulatory blather about how well everything turned out.

Spot on comment. Totally. So much to learn, so straightforward, so deeply *quiet*. Best content by far, in part because I have loved mid-century furniture way longer than it was cool to, and I've always loved natural audio. I'm going to attempt to re-veener the top of a mid-century dresser because of all I've learned here.

Do you watch the channel "Thomas Johnson Antique Furniture Restauration"? I think you would enjoy that channel, too. He uses his 40-ish years of professional experience to expertly restore a beautiful antique or vintage piece and at the end he humbly says, "I think it looks pretty good." I am always in awe of his work, and his videos have that same calm, meditative quality.

How hard is it to compliment someone without bringing down a bunch of other people? His style is certainly different than other channels, and it’s well deserved to compliment him, but leave other people out of it.

I am not certain, but I think this small table was a Portable Phonograph Stand, for the small portable phonographs that were popular in the early 1960s - The phonogaph would have sat on top, the 7" 45 singles in the cabinet section, and the 12" LP albums in the lower section. The hole in the side was for a power cord for an AM/FM Portable Radio that was placed in the cabinet section at a later time. These quickly fell out of favor in the mid sixties when larger, more capable modular Stereo Systems, with Turntables, Amplifiers, AM./FM Receivers, and Twin Speakers became more available. Very nice work on the veneering / restoration - this could now indeed be an elegant Cigar Cabinet !
@furlvr19613 жыл бұрын
I think your assessment about it being a phonograph stand is absolutely spot on. I've seen others like it with exactly that purpose. It helps that I was born in the early 60s. ;-)

Tend to disagree. The fluting and detail work is very 1930s
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans76483 жыл бұрын
@@steveparker2938 Who knows, it might have been deliberately retro (with respect to the age it was built of course). Maybe it followed something like the Popular Mechanics articles of that era, which were about how to build a neat this, a cool that. Or... it was built earlier and was later repurposed from an actual tobacco cabinet.
@SeekingTheLoveThatGodMeans76483 жыл бұрын
I would have expected a larger hole, in the rear, wide enough to pass the plug through. Unless maybe a homemade extension cord went through that hole, which would also ease servicing whatever was placed inside the cabinet and let more than one item be placed inside the cabinet. But again there was no place reported where the socket end would have been anchored (unless it lay loose).

Fascinating. It looks amazing. I’d love this cabinet next to my armchair. It would be perfect to house my diary and planner and other stationery accessories so they would be within easy reach of my chair. There’s room on the bottom shelf for whichever book I’m currently reading, or a place for my iPad and of course room for my coffee cup on the top. If there’s any residual smell of tobacco, even better, as it would remind me of my dad.

A proffesional would use wood glue to stick a patch of tougher plastic to the inside of the cabinet, and use a bent 4 inch nail to hold the outside together, works much better than duct tape and staples.
@joanfrellburg49012 жыл бұрын
@@Beerwalla1 I'm with the 4 inch nail but only if it's rusty to blend in with the natural woodgrain finish. Actually what was I thinking, obviously it's rusty, who has new 4 inch nails anymore.
