Weird thing - everyone looks at the smaller tablecloths and dismisses them, even when the material might be solid rough linen and great for larp. But you say: There's not enough there to make a costume! To which I reply: it's the accents that matter and all the little details make a character SO MUCH more believable! Even if there's only 36 inches square, that's near perfect for making a butcher's apron! You'll have a bit of spare material to make pockets in the front and EVERY CHARACTER NEEDS MORE POCKETS. What if it's already stained? All the better for anyone not playing royalty. Give what you find a good bucket scrub to remove anything scary, and then find a use! Maybe your character needs a vest? Maybe you need zombie wrappings for a midnight creature raid on that encampment of elves over there. There are a ton of uses for just a bit of fabric.

I love draperies as a source of fabrics for medieval nobility. Those fabrics are upwards of $40 per yard retail and a drapery panel, which often yields about 1 1/2 yards of fabric are usually $7-$10 per panel.

YES! I refuse to buy glass stuff, it's far too likely to break! I'd never thought about purses and throw pillows before! Good idea!

Yeah I realize now that I should have clarified to strip the pillow case off the pillow. But then again, you're smart people.

There can be some amazing finds at thrift stores. I have nabbed a drinking tankard for 50 cents. The hubby and I have also gone through the purses and removed hardware for leather pouches I've made. Wonderful thoughts 🖖🧚🧝🧜🧙

Thanks, I larped for 2 decades and I found ugly coats but 100% wool and leather and seam ripping the h@$^ out of them. Thanks so much. Flat sheets are treasure.

So many great thrift stores in Portland, too. I get most of my costuming and larp ambiance props at the Red Door and House of Vintage up here. ^_^

Those are such great tips. I always step into a thrift store and get completely overwhelmed. Those are some great points to start at. I would have never thought to look at the purses and curtains for material. Something to look forward to on my next run

I have such a garbage thrift store in my home town... gotta go to the city for good stuff XD
@HeyMackenzieJ5 жыл бұрын
It is harder in places outside of cities. At the same time, I follow this group on Facebook that posts weird stuff that they find in thrift stores all over the world and a lot of the coolest stuff comes from small towns. For instance, seeing a vampire slayer kit! Several have shown up on this group. I have seen a few comments regarding this sentiment and I almost want to start a challenge where people send me pictures and I'll think of a LARP use. I'll think about a hashtag for it.

Same. I live in a small town so if I want the good stuff I need to go to the city.

I always wanted to check out online thrift store shopping. I recently bought a violin on www.shopgoodwill.com/ for $12. It's the ebay equivalent of Goodwill shopping. They had some vintage violins going for $40-$100. Check it out. They have some interesting stuff.

I keep wanting to make pants or a skirt out of them and can't bring myself to do it. I've used them to cover camping chairs, and in my tent as room dividers. Of course you see them in every episode of TSL so far.

My goodwill always sells earrings for $4 and yeah they’re new because they’ll sell like 20 of the same exact pair of earrings but I’m like I can just buy nicer earrings at forever 21 for $3. Sometimes I’ll find shirts that are dirty and old for like $10 and I’m like you got me fucked up I’ll just go to Walmart lol. But I still love going cus sometimes you find things that you can buy from the store like I found a renfest ceramic mug one time and another a full adult goats pelt for only $20!
@HeyMackenzieJ5 жыл бұрын
I want to see the goats pelt! Did you end up making anything with it? Or do you use it as a throw?
@MeekaChannel5 жыл бұрын
Thrift Store LARPer I just use it to throw over stuff but I might end up crafting with it in the future.

So I thought you hadn't uploaded in ages, it turns out KZbin just wasn't telling me. Ton of good advice here, we get regular €1/2 sales in our charity shops so we do a monthly hunt. Is that a fox skull on the hat?
