Thrifted Transformations | Ep. 22 DIY Mulan Costume

When using dyes be SUPER CAREFUL!!!!!! 1. If the dye is going to be powdered USE A MASK!!! This stuff is known to cause CANCER if you breathe in the dye dust. 2. The dye removal is also SUPER DANGEROUS so wear a mask! 3. If you use a pot for dyeing something DO NOT use it for food! 4. Try not took dye things in your kitchen, if that is the only place you can dye stuff CLEAN EVERYTHING!!!!! 5. Dyeing fiber fabrics (silk, wool, alpaca, ect anything from an animal) or nylon trying using a cup or so of vinegar it helps the dye take. 6. RISE YOUR FABRIC till the water runs clear 7. wash your fabric before and after dyeing, see if you can get your hands on synthrapol (at your local joann fabrics), be careful though synthrapol is pure detergent without any fragrance or bleach, so wash it off your hands!! 8. After washing your newly dyed cloths run your washer again with a few spare towels and some bleach, this gets rid of any extra dye 9. Rit dyes are not super good at dying polyester and the fabric may or may not take the dye at all, you need special industrial grade dye for that 10. Rit dyes are good for one time only dye baths, if you try to replicate a certain color you probably wont get what you want a second time 11. If you can CUT SWATCHES and dye those first so you know what you are going to get. 12. Rit dyes are special they have both protein (anything from an animal) and cellulose (plants) fiber dyes in them so you can use a dye bath twice if dyeing two different fiber types. HOPE THIS HELPS!!!

The reason the blue fabric turned purple is because multiple dyes went into making that color. The color remover striped off one color first and revealed what was left before taking the rest off.

my best friend and I did something similar for a new years eve party we went as Anna and Elsa and made all the costumes from clothes we bought. We went shopping in town on 30th December and got some bits and bobs from charity shops and from boyes which is a shop that sells material and sewing materials and dyes etc . I wish I could show you some of the pictures, we did it in a day and sewed it all by hand, I was massively proud :D

Super awesome video! With the color remover, it grabs hold of the dyed fabric, and sticks to it for a sec turning it darker for a moment. might i also suggest you make a quick DIY Halloween costume video for those lazy folks out there x3

Hey April, I would like to point out that the lapel should be left over the right. It's just how Han Chinese traditional costume (Hanfu) is supposed to be. Always left crossed over the right lapel. =) Awesome costume nonetheless! =D
