I think hes made the connection that the color and object type are independent but if hes used to seeing cups from glass/ceramic for example, and then show him a metal one, thats bound to confuse him a lot. But still the fact that he can recognise objects with some actual logic behind his thinking is mind bending. they also showed how he will call a pack of napkins a book since napkins are paper and a stack of paper is a book so therefore that must also be a book. Fascinating stuff. Looking forward to seeing what he can learn in the future. animals communicate with us in many different ways but its so wild when an animal communicates with actual vocal language

I think it's important to recognise that Apollo doesn't have a neocortex, he doesn't have the luxury of one like we humans do, so he's having to build and maintain these connections on (in a sense) one level. He's a very impressive bird indeed, but a lot of credit has to go to his owners who show great patience with him, great diligence and have created a happy, loving and stimulating environment for him in which to learn. Awesome work, guys! 🫡🙏😙

what exactly does the neocortex do for us that apollo lacks? probably something to do with memory
@TheBioExplorer Жыл бұрын
The neocortex makes up the outer layer of the human brain's cerebral cortex. Much of our complex cognition & creativity is done there.. It was ONCE thought that parrots and other birds are limited in this because they didn't have a neocortex. However, that is now in dispute. (Bird Brains Are Far More Humanlike Than One Thought, by Brad Stetka. Scientific American. September, 2020). It turns out they do have a structure that functions as a neocortex despite being a different shape. It's not exactly a neocortex but it functions as one. Also... interestingly enough "smart birds" like Ravens, crows, & magpies... (all birds that learn by observation and can adapt the information to problem solve and even be subjective).... have as many neurons (the nerve cells) in their relatively small brains as primates do... they are just more densely packed together to fit in a smaller area.
@Windbadger Жыл бұрын
@@jaspab2348 it's higher brain functions. I know that much.
@Sakkura1 Жыл бұрын
The lower parts of the pallium are expanded in birds, while in mammals it is instead mainly the upper parts that have expanded as the neocortex. The functional significance of this is not fully explored, but it is hypothesized that the expanded pallium functions homologously to the neocortex. Of course, it's hard to keep up specifically with the human neocortex, because it's just so big.

You guys must know that parrots see a wider spectrum of colors than people. The purple vase may very well appear more red than purple to him. Magenta.
@volvodoc012 жыл бұрын
Yes they definitely do see in broader spectrum! I know they see well into the UV spectrum. See what a picture taken with a digital camera w/the infrared and UV filters removed… colors look much different.
@Vamooso2 жыл бұрын
But what can also be in play is, with humans, they find it hard to differentiate different shades of colour if they have no word for it, so he may just label all the extra hues he can see that we can't all under 'red' unless he's taught more specific colours Possibly anyway, imho
@spiritmatter15532 жыл бұрын
I’ve speculated that myself. A simple internet search of "what birds see" is very instructive. Anyone with a basic grasp of color theory knows that purple is made by combining red and blue.
@MattMcIrvin Жыл бұрын
They have a fourth primary color in the ultraviolet--so they can see mixtures of primaries that aren't even distinguishable to us; the "color wheel" of saturated hues they can see would be a sphere rather than a circle, and colors that look the same to us might be different to them. That might make it hard to learn human color words.
@TheBioExplorer Жыл бұрын
They also communicate with color... some colors we can't see. It's also why we sometimes fail to read our bird's body language correctly and think they gave no warning before biting or flying off. Turns out when you use a camera that sees in ultraviolet... birds will often shift their feathers positions on their bodies.. sometimes so slightly we wouldn't notice the movement. The change in feathers positions causes light to bounce off of them differently. To another bird they see this as a color change and it communicates things to them ... "Like FU! Go away! I don't want to step up." .... or "Hey dude, I hate you because you are too close to what I think is my mate.". That being the other person in the room that has been unintentionally provoking hormonal responses by touching their backs, wings, etc or feeding them goopy or warm foods).
