Жыл бұрын

Got some glassware at a thrift store to show Apollo. We tried to get things he could say/identify so we have more things to question him on. We also tried to make sure the items were new combinations of material, color, and shape. One of our biggest obstacles in introducing new things is how excited he gets can make it difficult for him to focus. Lately Apollo has been doing great overcoming his anxiety and is responding better to novel objects.
Apollo is our 2 1/2 year-old African Grey parrot we've had since December 2020.
Founder of Shrock and renowned GLASS connoisseur.

especially the material id imagine. I think hes made the connection that the color and object type are independent but if hes used to seeing cups from glass/ceramic for example, and then show him a metal one, thats bound to confuse him a lot. But still the fact that he can recognise objects with some actual logic behind his thinking is mind bending. they also showed how he will call a pack of napkins a book since napkins are paper and a stack of paper is a book so therefore that must also be a book. Fascinating stuff. Looking forward to seeing what he can learn in the future. animals communicate with us in many different ways but its so wild when an animal communicates with actual vocal language

I think it's important to recognise that Apollo doesn't have a neocortex, he doesn't have the luxury of one like we humans do, so he's having to build and maintain these connections on (in a sense) one level. He's a very impressive bird indeed, but a lot of credit has to go to his owners who show great patience with him, great diligence and have created a happy, loving and stimulating environment for him in which to learn. The neocortex makes up the outer layer of the human brain's cerebral cortex. Much of our complex cognition & creativity is done there.. It was ONCE thought that parrots and other birds are limited in this because they didn't have a neocortex. However, that is now in dispute. (Bird Brains Are Far More Humanlike Than One Thought, by Brad Stetka. Scientific American. September, 2020). It turns out they do have a structure that functions as a neocortex despite being a different shape. It's not exactly a neocortex but it functions as one. Also... interestingly enough "smart birds" like Ravens, crows, & magpies... (all birds that learn by observation and can adapt the information to problem solve and even be subjective).... have as many neurons (the nerve cells) in their relatively small brains as primates do... they are just more densely packed together to fit in a smaller area.

The lower parts of the pallium are expanded in birds, while in mammals it is instead mainly the upper parts that have expanded as the neocortex. The functional significance of this is not fully explored, but it is hypothesized that the expanded pallium functions homologously to the neocortex. Of course, it's hard to keep up specifically with the human neocortex, because it's just so big.

Yes they definitely do see in broader spectrum! I know they see well into the UV spectrum. See what a picture taken with a digital camera w/the infrared and UV filters removed… colors look much different.
@Tyrrituil
@Tyrrituil Жыл бұрын
But what can also be in play is, with humans, they find it hard to differentiate different shades of colour if they have no word for it, so he may just label all the extra hues he can see that we can't all under 'red' unless he's taught more specific colours Possibly anyway, imho
@spiritmatter1553
@spiritmatter1553 Жыл бұрын
I’ve speculated that myself. A simple internet search of "what birds see" is very instructive. Anyone with a basic grasp of color theory knows that purple is made by combining red and blue.
@MattMcIrvin
@MattMcIrvin 11 ай бұрын
They have a fourth primary color in the ultraviolet--so they can see mixtures of primaries that aren't even distinguishable to us; the "color wheel" of saturated hues they can see would be a sphere rather than a circle, and colors that look the same to us might be different to them. That might make it hard to learn human color words.
@TheBioExplorer
@TheBioExplorer 10 ай бұрын
They also communicate with color... some colors we can't see. It's also why we sometimes fail to read our bird's body language correctly and think they gave no warning before biting or flying off. Turns out when you use a camera that sees in ultraviolet... birds will often shift their feathers positions on their bodies.. sometimes so slightly we wouldn't notice the movement. The change in feathers positions causes light to bounce off of them differently. To another bird they see this as a color change and it communicates things to them ... "Like FU! Go away! I don't want to step up." .... or "Hey dude, I hate you because you are too close to what I think is my mate.". That being the other person in the room that has been unintentionally provoking hormonal responses by touching their backs, wings, etc or feeding them goopy or warm foods).

Offering Apollo the bell when he says the word for it is a fantastic idea. Studies show that people learn better when they're learning for learning's sake rather than learning to get a reward. I don't see why this wouldn't hold true for parrots as well.

Except for the purple cup. I get the feeling he might have seen it differently than them. This was a very violet cup and birds can see ultraviolet light. Not sure if this is how it works, but I'd assume violet things often reflect ultraviolet as well. Maybe something about the ultraviolet made it look like what he perceives as red. Perhaps some of the objects they've used to show "red" to him looked ultraviolet to him, and so he thinks they're the same color?

Hello! 😊 Just a few tips: you guys will see better results when you further classify objects for him and are more specific with your questions, such as asking, "what object?" (Answer: vase, bell, floor, etc.) For example, he keeps calling the vase "red" because he is unsure of what you are asking of him. Put the red vase and the purple vase together and say, "vase." Then take a color away and name the color left, adding the two words (birds are incredibly smart and he knows he's missing information; you will frustrate him and hinder learning if you aren't able to classify better), "purple vase", "red vase". Then add the material ("what material?"), "red glass vase", "yellow metal bell". Also try to pet him with high-pitched praise instead of always rewarding with treats or the rewards will become less special and the brain will just start to become unmotivated. My mother was an animal behaviorist and we had all types of animals and birds growing up, including conures (yours are so sweet and innocent😅), African Greys, macaws, cockatoos, cockatiels and parakeets (my personal favorites), lovebirds and finches. I can tell just by looking at your birds (and I've only just subscribed, this being my second video I've seen from your channel) that they get regular baths (their feathers are healthy) and sunshine (essential for vitamin D synthesis, very important for birds, because vitamin D is an immune modulator that specifically helps to repair the respiratory tract- and birds are very susceptible to respiratory infections). I can also see you giving healthy treats, toys for stimulation (baby toys are the cheapest and easiest ways to teach birds and provide plenty of stimulation; try getting infant toys with levers and buttons, as well as looking for activity blankets with varying textures, such as crinkly material or ridging). They should also have grit and calcium to chew and eat and a big parrot like your guy will need his beak and nails trimmed more often. Parrots in the wild often live on rocky clefts, and they use their beaks and claws more in the wild. Also, instead of correcting an unwanted answer with no, use silence or stand straight up or back a bit. Animals use body language and he will take his cue when he sees you respond in that way. In fact, in general, 70% of communication is non-verbal (obviously, this isn't true for me😅). If I can recommend something else, it would be to get a nice heavy blanket from a thrift store and keep that wrapped behind his cage (we used baby toy link connectors to fasten things to their cages because it's fast and cheap, and non-toxic) to keep drafts out and to wrap around the front at night for bedtime (birds do so much better with routines and get sick more easily and cranky if they're tired😅). They like feeling secure, as well (parrots are prey, after all). I hope I've not offended you guys! You're doing amazing. I smiled so much during the two videos I watched so far. I'll share a quick story about one of our Blue-fronted Amazons, Joey: We lived in an apartment complex when I was younger and there were tons of kids there. Often, we would hear kids playing outside and having fun but we would also hear neighbors slamming doors and being annoying. A few times I've walked into our living room with a kid standing there, just looking around, bewildered. At first, we couldn't figure out why this was happening but after the third kid, we asked how they got in and they said someone said to come in. 😅Joey used to ask, "Who ISSS it?" when someone knocked on the door, but then he learned the phrase, "Come in!" 🤣 We had to start locking our doors. He also used to yell out randomly, "Tameeeekahhhhh! Tamekah, comere!" I never even met that kid but Joey knew who she was😂 Thanks for bringing up good memories for me! ❤😊

I believe parrots see color differently. Could this influence it? I can imagine the purple vase could look red with some imagination?
@ApolloandFrens
@ApolloandFrens Жыл бұрын
Some people have pointed out that the red glass against a dark background is purple, which I definitely agree with after having that pointed out. As for them seeing color differently, that’s true they have an additional UV color cone, but as long as the item isn’t UV reactive it shouldn’t be an issue.
@vylbird8014
@vylbird8014 Жыл бұрын
@@ApolloandFrens UV absorbing would be the issue. Not all glass is alike - it's carefully manufactured with a blend of additives to be transparent within the human visual spectrum. To a bird that can see into the UV, 'clear' glass would have a red tint, the extent of which depends upon the specifics of the glass.

This is SO interesting! Teaching him an objects properties instead of conditioning him to a specific object must really make his gears grind. It seams easier for him to get things right when its about visible properties. He got the vase right first try, even though he had never seen it before, but making the connection between a bell and its sound seemed to hard.. I wonder why that is, if auditive cues are more abstract or something...

Bell was likely hard because he had seen bells but they were metal. So follow me here. Bell= metal+color He noticed the bell was white and glass, but as we established Bell=metal+color And that was glass so it cant be a bell. Its probably a little rare for something to be made of two materials so he was thinking "this can't be a bell, bells are metal and this is glass." Rather then "this is a glass bell"

I wonder if a bird’s ability to see into the UV spectrum affects what colors look like to Apollo. Light through glass might look different to him, especially.
