Wow, your Goodwills have a much better selection than my local ones. I rarely find any interesting old electronics, video games, or vintage toys. And one of them has stopped stocking VHS altogether, which is the main thing I collect. Especially cult 80's horror films (a genre meant to be watched on VHS if ever there was one). Fortunately there's still a couple decent independent thrift stores in my area. Nice haul, dude!

The Goodwill's where I live don't put any horror movies out unless it is something mainstream like Poltergeist. They don't want anything out that children can't see. You can get all the copies of Days of Thunder and Steel Magnolias you want, but forget about anything scifi or horror that's rated R

I even have the lyric notes signed by the voices of Yakko and Wakko. I've met them both several times at conventions and they're both extremely cool people. Really hoping the revival of the show in 2020 doesn't suck.

I am totally with you on the VHS thing. I have become a lot more nostalgic for them recently due to everything being so HD it looks almost too real, so real in fact that it makes movies today look artificial. Best way I can describe VHS quality movies is they just feel "warmer" and more comfy to me. I would collect them since everybody seems to hate them right now making them probably the cheapest they will ever be. On top of that I know that like anything else, such as NES games, the market/demand for them WILL go crazy at some point in the future. Thing is, I already collect so much, I just can't justify getting obsessed with collecting something else.

Has anyone else noticed the huge jump in prices in the Phoenix area Goodwills? I used to be able to go in and find some deals, especially on electronics and video games. But those days are gone, and it seems E-Bay buy it now pricing is the benchmark Goodwill managers use. I often see items going for the same or a bit more than they do for new at a retail store next door.
@Myriad-Truths5 жыл бұрын
Our managers look up the retail prices, but we then cut that price in half . Ex: brand new PS4 game is $60, we sell it for 30 or 20, a $50 purse for $25/20, etc. Hopefully the other stores follow suit

I still have a rather good size collection of VHS tapes myself, though mainly 80s/90s sci-fi and horror films as I was HUGE into those decades of horror for years. I'd have replaced a lot of them with DVD or Blu-Ray, but not a lot are on those formats, or if they are, are crazy expensive and rare. Plus, when a lot of the VHS tapes are from the old rental stores that used to be around my parents' house, I just can't part with that nostalgia. R.I.P. rental stores.
@CharmingNewSociety6 жыл бұрын
That's the main reason I started collecting vhs again, is all those cult titles that never made it to the next formats. But there's some stuff I just need to own on tape regardless. Old Troma films, classic 80's cult horror like Return of the Living Dead, Fright Night, and Creepshow, all just feel *right* watching on vhs.

Most Goodwill stuff goes through a sorting center first, and I'm fairly sure they direct games, movies, electronics, and good furniture to just a handful of stores. That way instead of one or two good things at each store, they concentrate the "good stuff" which draws a certain crowd to each store. I am 100% certain, however, the really good stuff that's worth serious money never gets to the stores, but gets put on the Goodwill auction site to maximize profit.

I agree with Jacky Lawrence by and large. A lot of Goodwills in particular places out there in the boondocks aren't very intriguing. Disappointing on the whole, but still worth a see for that experience all the same. Liked Airwolf a lot back in the day. I have one of those DVD editions. Like many people, the person who donated those probably just wanted to upgrade to the full series in one box set. I gave my VHS set of those Airwolf episodes to my local library back in the early 2000s. But they only loan out DVDs now. Still have my Sanford & Son and Flintstones collections, although I don't watch VCR period stuff any longer. And that old '80s Kmart logo: cute. Priceless. Sad how life moves and changes. But a joy to go back and see/play with.

I had that Rocky & Bullwinkle tape, and the rest of the series, but without the Smith's stickers all over them. And the Cabin Fever series of Little Rascals on VHS (all 21 volumes!), which formed the bulk of my conversion efforts putting them on DVD-R (besides the Rascals shorts, each volume has an intro by Leonard Maltin). If you should ever spot a big-box Disney VHS of The Rescuers, make sure to pick it up if the cover picture has a tan border. That's the one that they discovered two frames of a nude photo in the background and quickly pulled all the tapes out of stores, but not before I was able to snag one at a Safeway over in Mesa. I'm told they're now a collectors item.
