Thrifting Vintage Bargains in an Antique Town & Goodwill!

An 1890s railroad town in the middle of a savannah is the perfect setting for both antiquing and thrift store fun! Arcadia, Florida is my stopping point when I travel to and from the West Palm Beach antique show, a long bypassed and forgotten town now finding new life thanks to a bevy of antique and thrift shops that have sprung up here.
My m.o. is to hit a few antique stores for nice pieces to take to the show, then hit a thrift store on the way back when the van is emptier to restock with bargains. We do both in this episode, discovering whether you can find vintage deals in thrift stores when the antique dealers are just down the block...and whether those same dealers might offer us a few bargains on their finds.
The answer in this case is happily, yes to both! Though Hurricane Ian blew through just months ago, many of the antique shops are back in full force, and the town's variety of Victorian to 1920s houses are starting to renovate as well. Meanwhile, the Goodwill store is teeming with fresh stock, and this one has enough local interest from vintage hunters that they haven't sent all the good stuff away!
We get a nice taste of a few shops, meet a really fun shop owner with a taste for MCM glass, and mark our calendars to come back for one of Arcadia's monthly antique shows in the future.

My Husband and I bought an Arts and Crafts era home about 30 years ago. All the interior doors have the glass doorknobs, and the outside of the side door as well. Over the years, that knob has turned a gorgeous purple from the sun, before we even got there. I love it.🖤🇨🇦

Thank you for showing Arcadia. I didn't know they had sustained damage from Hurricane Ian. I live in Fort Myers and my family was originally from the Desoto County area dating back to the 1850s. So glad to see that the historic homes are still there. I think I am due a visit there soon!

Arcadia was an interesting place, George. Love the beautiful old homes being brought back to life. I was in Gulf Shores, AL when Ian struck last year. We had planned going to Pensicola, but decided to stay out of the way of any rescue people on their way to help. That lady, Carolyn, was quite knowledgable & had some very impressive pieces. Btw, i like her name 😉.

Good evening, George! WOW! That brass telescope was fantastic! That didn't seem a bad price on it, either. I liked those swords. It would be fun to have a wall display of a grouping of them. That silver service set was pretty and that was a really good price...but I ain't polishing silver 😆 Dang, that seemed really cheap on the wicker set. It was a shame that Dresden piece had so much damage. That was a beautiful piece of porcelain. That Goodwill seems like a place to give a few visits. Not too many of them have the kinds of things they had there. That was a fun video! Thanks for the take-along!

I like showing telescopes and swords and cool metal objects! I figured after the last video that something less jewelry focused was okay. I don't polish either, even though that is a good pattern and might have been salable...I was sad the Dresden piece had such a hard life, but was pleased to think you could find something good at Goodwill! Glad you had fun :)

Tons of Sabino and Lalique are coming out of estate sales these days. I know of one coming up that probably has 20 or so pieces of Sabino, including that same nude figure. As a reseller - it's torture going thru Antique centers, booths and malls . The prices are way too high -- especially on better stuff. And also the fact that - seems like every antique center has the same "mind set" with too too much glass and "Granny-tiques" . Always lacking vintage toys by Mattel , Remco, Ideal , Topper. And always lacking toys from 1966 thru 1970.
@TheAntiqueNomad
@TheAntiqueNomad Жыл бұрын
I only know of a few malls that have specialists in those areas, most of those are items that are taken by toy dealers to specialty shows and are priced even higher than they are in the malls. I find that some antique malls are more reseller friendly, and some are pricing at full retail (but there's almost always one overlooked item that offers profit). On the other hand, if there isn't a retail market, then everything is wholesale, and resellers need a retail customer or there's no reselling...so there's the conundrum.
