I’m a diehard Kansas fan, and this game made me incredibly happy. I’ve never seen us beat Oklahoma in my life, and I stayed at this game the whole time and rushed the field and it was truly the best football game I’ve ever been to, it’s one I’ll tell my kids about for sure. Thanks for the reaction!

Tearing down the goal posts is a very old college football tradition. When it happens, it's typically after a particularly meaningful win - rivalry games, conference championships, upsets, etc. These days, most schools take steps to prevent it from happening... increased security, goal posts which are designed to fold and collapse, even greasing them to make climbing nearly impossible. Part of the reason is the cost of replacement. More likely, is injury liability. My nephew is a KU frat boy. While I have not heard definitively, I would stake money that he was three sheets to the wind and right in the middle of it all.

At 8:22 the announcer points out that Oklahoma let Kansas score. In theory the best thing for Kansas would have been to run the clock to zero and kick a field goal (basically an extra point) and not give any time back to OU. But hard to not score a TD there as a running back. Also, the 61-yard field goal game was Missouri beating Kansas State. You were close, but you kept saying Montana State who is a lower-tier school for football.

Lance Leipold, the guy who has coached Kansas to its first bowl eligible year since 2008, was also the guy that brought UBuffalo (where I went to school) its first two Bowl wins in program history which was well over 100 years. Dude can coach. Kansas is traditionally known as a "basketball school" so it's honestly great to see them ranked in football at this point in the season

This is such a crazy win for Kansas. The last time Kansas had beaten Oklahoma was in 1997. Kansas's record from 1998-2022 is 95-202. Oklahoma's record from 1997-2022 is 257-71. Kansas has not had a winning season since 2008, and they only have to have one more win to have a winning record this year!

What's up Damo and Nick? Somehow I am watching this reaction 5 to 6 months after the fact on April 24th, 2024. Rock Chalk Jayhawk to you! Since you are a huge Chiefs fan you should make the University of Kansas (KU) Jayhawks your favorite college football and basketball team since they are the nearest large university to Kansas City. The Jayhawks are also the favorite college team of Ted Lasso (Jason Sudiekis) in real life, and I know you have a huge reaction due to be out for that on Monday for the Season 1 Episode 10 which was the finale for season 1. It is a fantastic episode, so have fun with that one. By the way season's 2 and 3 both have 12 episodes each. We are a traditional national power in basketball. In football we have a quite mediocre overall history despite having a couple of the greatest NFL running backs of all time having played there. We recently snapped out of one our longest most depressing periods in our football history when we finally hired the right coach a few years ago. After the previous coach went 0-9 in 2020 Lance Leipold was hired at the end of April, 2021. In his first season they went 2-10, but improved a great deal throughout the year and had a huge upset win at Texas late in the season led by sophomore QB Jalon Daniels. In 2022 he the Jayhawks to our first bowl game since the 2008 season with a 6-6 regular. Last season they 9-4 despite the starting quarterback (Jalon Daniels) only playing 3 games and the backup Jason Bean who you watched in this highlight video missing two games late in the season forcing KU to play their 3rd string QB for those two games even though he was a true freshman walk on (meaning he didn't receive a scholarship initially) player. This year the Jayhawks are looking forward to a potentially historic season especially in Daniels stays healthy and plays in most of the games. The realistic goal is win the Big 12 Conference which would land them an automatic bid in the college football playoff. Also, KU just started a project to rebuild their stadium which has been there since 1921 immediately after the end of the season. It will be unavailable this fall as the project won't be completed until before the 2025 season. This season KU will play their two non-conference home games at the Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas which is the home of Sporting Kansas City (KC's MLS team) and their four conference home games will be played at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri which is of course the home of the Chiefs. Some more information on the parts of this game you didn't see. There was expected to be a possibility of some bad whether during the game, but at the beginning it was fine as it was dry but just a little bit cold. KU jumped out to 14-0 early on after starting with a three and out on our first possession but then getting a pick 6 on OU's second offensive snap of the game. We then stopped them put together a drive for the second TD. The weather started to go down hill at the start of the second quarter as was raining and cold with temperature in the lows 30's. Then it started lightning on top of that and play was stopped about half way through the second quarter for about an one hour and fifteen minutes. When the teams came back out much of the crowd wasn't back in the stands yet because they had not really announced when the game would resume and many people thought it would be quite a bit longer. KU came out flat and OU tied it up 14-14 with a couple of nice TD drives. Then one of KU's receivers made it worse and fumbled the ensuing kickoff which quickly led to a 21-14 deficit. Then KU put together a good drive before the end of the but was only able to finish with a field goal to make it 21-17 at half time. KU's defense played well in the third quarter and the offense put together a field goal drive making 21-20 with about five minutes left in third quarter. KU started a nice drive at the end of the quarter which resulted in a TD to put KU up 26-21 with about 12 minutes left in the fourth quarter. This was scored when your highlight video above started with just under seven minutes left in the game. Also, the game you mentioned having watched a couple weeks before that was between Kansas State University (KSU) and the University of Missouri. (MU) MU won that game on a last second 61 yard field goal. Both of those teams fans think KU as being their biggest rival, but KU fans MU was the biggest rival at least until 2012 when they left for a different conference meaning we seldom play them anymore. KSU was always a rival of KU of course but traditionally MU was the which actually has historical roots going back to the Civil War and a time period just before that known as "Bleeding Kansas".

The Kansas touchdown was actually a pretty unusual situation, and here's my best attempt to explain it: You'll notice on 1st and goal (8:10) the Oklahoma defense let the running back straight through, and though it might just look like poor defense, it was most likely on purpose. With a minute left on the clock and Kansas only down by 1 point, the worst case situation for Oklahoma would be letting Kansas run 3 plays to wind down the clock under 30 seconds and THEN kick a field goal, because it wouldn't leave much time for Oklahoma to score. On the other hand, if they let Kansas score right away, then Oklahoma still has a minute and 2 timeouts to drive down the field and hopefully score a touchdown to win the game. Again, this isn't a situation that happens too often, and it's not super easy to tell either, but it does happen occasionally.

So as a fan of the University of Kansas, you're confusing the game you watched earlier this year between Missouri and Kansas State University. Those are two different schools, two different teams. A bit like confusing Sheffield United and Sheffield Wednesday. As a point of clarity, the tearing down of the goal posts is not something that Tennessee started. The first recorded instance of that happening is in 1876 in a game between Harvard and Yale. This is not the first time Kansas has torn down the goal posts. They do it after every big win, which for the past decade, a big win to Kansas has meant essentially ANY win at home. They are historically, a pretty bad team when it comes to Football. So they end up doing it basically once every other year or so. Once they remove the goalposts from the stadium they throw them in a pond that's a roughly 1/4 mile walk from the stadium. The pond is affectionately called Potter's Lake. Only recently has Kansas become a decent football team again. Not great, but decent. This year is only the second time in program history that they are bowl eligible in back-to-back seasons.

As a lifelong Kansan and University of Kansas alumnus, this win was so incredibly special. It is great to see the Jayhawks starting to turn the corner. The win was particularly special because Oklahoma is moving to the SEC next year, so it'll be the last time we play them for the foreseeable future. The bell at the end was from the Campanile bell tower. During games, it is rung after touchdowns and after wins. The Campanile was built in remembrance of the members of the KU community who died in WWII.
