Before you even analyze the bump itself, for the reasons stated in the previous paragraphs the Corvette had every right to give a little bump to the GT3 when he knew he wasn't going to get any favorable penalty for the GT3's hi-jinks. After the bump the Corvette gets a run on the GT3 and almost completely gets passed him while the GT3 gives him the big squeeze. If you slow the video down and watch the angle from behind, watch the light shining on the wall on the left. You can see that the GT3 makes contact with the Corvette, and THEN the light against the wall completely disappears, meaning that the Corvette made contact with the wall AFTER the GT3 makes contact. Both cars jolt to the right as they now BOTH make contact with the wall, and the Corvette spins out to the right IN FRONT of the GT3, proving that the Corvette did indeed make it past. This also absolves the Corvette of ANY kind of idea that he should have "eased up" or something to that affect. He was PAST the GT3. He for one would have had no way to know the GT3 was still squeezing farther until he actually made contact and he WAS FUCKING PAST THE GT3. HE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO KEEP THE PEDAL DOWN AND KEEP TRUCKING THE FINISH.

Look at the Porsche's front wheels he was on full lock after the hit, and the Vette dove forward when he hit him. I'm sorry but how is that in any way fair? To win after literally forcing your opponent off the track (if he hadn't caught that slide he would have spun). Bergmeister lost a race in the exact same way a year back or so before this so naturally he wasn't going to let it happen (since they wouldn't have penalized the Vette in any way if he would have just let him through let's be honest). I don't blame him, I'd have done the same exact thing.

Part of it is that the Vette pushed the GT3 coming into the last corner and the Porsche wasn't gonna have it. I mean if you watch close I'm pretty sure that on the final straight the GT3 technically didn't touch the vette, he braked and backed off. The Vette could have slowed and let the GT3 pass, but instead crashed.
@Domi396 жыл бұрын
@@jackkost967 That's not entirely correct, nor the full picture. And The GT3 ABSOLUTELY touched the vette on the final straight. The Corvette made it passed the GT3. That's how the GT3 spun the Corvette. Regardless of what one might think about the pit out penalty, the Corvette was quickly pulling away from the GT3 after passing showing he had the faster car and/or was the better driver, and after the corvette served the penalty, everything was essentially reset to zero. Regardless if you think the Corvette is a cheater cheater pumpkin eater for cutting the corner, he served his penalty and it was for all intents and purposes completely harmless. He deserves no further judgement at that point. However, that doesn't mean the Corvette has the right to the position just because he's faster. He still has to earn that by cleanly passing the GT3, since the GT3 of course also has every right to that position. On the following lap, the Corvette got a run on the outside of the GT3 in turn 1 and gets more than halfway passed him. Right at 11:18 you can see there's no contact yet, but the GT3 loses his rear end and bumps INTO THE CORVETTE. If you pause at 11:20 you can actually see just how much countersteer the GT3 needed to hold on, and it was the contact with the Corvette that actually saved him most likely. The Corvette continues to gain ground around the outside and has more than 3/4th's of his car alongside the GT3, and instead of the GT3 taking the loss for his own mistake, you can see that he starts to quickly straighten and dart for the outside to shut the door. You can see the Corvette and GT3 are already back on the power and the corvette is gaining ground moving along the outside. By 11:21 The GT3 has control of the car again and does not maintain his previous rate of turn to give room to the Corvette and literally runs him off the track. This alone, is bullshit. That should have been a penalty in its own right in my opinion. I could see it being called for if the GT3 was the one who darted down the inside after Corvette DIDN'T get reprimanded for the pit out pass, but he DID. They were on even footing at that point. The GT3 loses control of his car without any help from the Corvette, and the only reason he at worst didn't spin out entirely or at best didn't lose more time is because the Corvette was there to soften the blow. And after fucking himself up, he stubbornly shuts the door on the guy who had more than a right to his position on the track. Had the Corvette not backed off and been side by side with the GT3 at the end of that corner and the GT3 still attempted that maneuver, he would have undoubtedly been penalized. The Corvette most likely was playing it ridiculously safe after the penalty on the previous lap, and didn't want to take any chances. I can't say I blame him either. However, no penalty for that. Race on. There are several things wrong with this. Firstly, you can't just hit someone because they made it passed you, ESPECIALLY when you're going to be making contact on one of the back quarter panels (you'll literally PIT maneuver the guy, as we saw). Secondly, you can't literally push someone into a wall. Put the big squeeze on him? Hell yeah drive that fucker to the wall. Actually put him into the wall? Fuck no. And we can clearly see the sideways momentum of the GT3 transfer into the Corvette before making contact with the wall. Thirdly, if he felt so strongly that he had the right to that position, then he could have just let the race finish and then had the stewards make the adjustment. Instead he single handedly destroyed a racecar and put someone's life in danger because he felt he got jipped. This is ALL ignoring the fact the Corvette probably shouldn't have been penalized anyway for the pit out pass, probably should have been allowed past the GT3 on the following lap, and the fact that on the final corner, the GT3 ran wide and left the door open, which is part of the reason why the Corvette stuck his nose in there and bumped him. Once again if you watch the lights, you can see that the lights are entirely illuminating the left side of the GT3, and his right headlight is roughly 1/3rd to the left from the right side of the GT3 before ever making contact. Had the Corvette been directly behind the GT3, his right headlight would have been illuminating parts of the right curved part of the bumper (like it was while they were in the braking zone). It doesn't look like any dirt flies up like the Corvette cut the corner either. The bump was entirely warranted from the events on the previous lap, but if you think it wasn't: it's the final corner of the final lap, and the guy in front of you leaves quarter of a car width open on corner exit. Had the Porsche hit the apex and been directly in front of the Corvette, a bump would have done nothing besides maybe unsettle the car, but the Corvette would have had to refrain from putting the power on to move to the left of the GT3 even had the GT3 gotten unsettled in that scenario. My point is that the Corvette was racing. He had an opening and took it. Even disregarding the previous circumstances. The only reason the ending of this is considered "controversial" is because half of the people formulating an opinion on it are misinformed and/or ignorant to racecraft.

Agreed, and that hit was a lot more dangerous than it looked. There's not not much padding on the walls in the straights and Magnussen was really flying when he hit. The fact that he wasn't seriously injured is really a testament to how well the cars are designed.

@@Domi39 The reason why the Corvette's light were illuminating the left of the Porsche's car instead of square on the rear is because the Porsche was turning left for the corner, revealing that side of the car to the 'Vette's headlights. The Corvette did not stick his nose 'in' anywhere as Jan was not alongside the Porsche at any point in that last corner. The contact was front bumper to rear bumper and with the nature of a corner being... well, a corner, the Porsche was never going to be "directly in front of the Corvette", even perfectly on the apex. You are talking as if the contact was on a straight. That bump was definitely naughty on Jan's part, but not illegal. As for the contact which actually caused the spin... Bergmeister moved Magnussen across, but then they had both straightened out and were running side by side for a second before the final contact was made. Thanks to the dust behind them and the headlight glare ahead of them, it is impossible to tell from these TV angles whether that final contact was made by the Porsche turning left, or the Corvette turning right. The Corvette going right across the nose of the Porsche would have the same result as the Porsche tuning into the Corvette's rear quarter. Hell Jan could even have just lost the back end accelerating over the painted white line along the edge of the track which has probably never seen rubber before, you just can't tell without onboard shots and steering angles. And then you go and talk about other people being "misinformed and/or ignorant to racecraft", after you say a driver should not get penalised for literally cutting a corner to overtake someone else? Come on...

So what happened in the last clip? Surely the Porsche got a penalty there, right?

3:31 is this some weird IMSA rule? How could the Ford have passed in a yellow zone? In fact, I would have allowed the Ford to try and sneak by if he wanted. Then he would have been black flagged. In fact them trying to block is what kept the front vette from being able to turn sharp enough for that traffic and lost him first place.

I don't know why they removed the PC class it was my favorite.

I liked the retro styling of the Oreca FLM09 and wished more attention had been paid to those teams during broadcasts. I think they will still be eligible to race in Europe, but I never heard anything concrete on that. IMSA simplified the car classes. The PC cars were getting pretty long in the tooth and there were just a few still being raced in North America. Many drivers prefer a closed cockpit as it is safer (and drier on wet days!) than the open one. Also, Oreca actually slowed down the cars a few years ago with an air restrictor on the engine to separate them from the LMP2 class while GT cars (especially GTLM) have gotten faster, so there was no longer any appreciable class separation for running times between PC and GTLM/GTD. LMP3 is now the primary prototype class in IMSA for amateur drivers and drivers who are training for DPi/LMP1 and LMP2. All the Mazda-powered Elan DP02 open cockpit cars (MPC class) from the Prototype Challenge support series have now been retired as well. Indycar (including its support/training series Indy Lights and US F2000) is the primary remaining open-cockpit-styled car series left in North America for racing at this level. They were initially an affordable option but nothing ever stays that way. If you liked the PC cars enough to buy one, a used FLM09 will run you about $250,000 USD, or an Elan DP02 could be had for around $100,000.

@@scottm3860 Update: I have heard the Elan DP09 is now (2019) being raced in North America in the P1 class of the SCCA. I haven't yet checked the SCCA website to see if there are any videos of them racing yet this year (seems a little early). There is surely a place in the world for the owners of the remaining Oreca FLM09 cars to race, even if only in historic races.
