Hello! Here is my test of the much anticipated Vive Tracker 3.0 and Tundra Tracker VS the old faithful Vive tracker 2.0. I love full body tracking in VR and I want more people to get into it! In case you're interested in any of these tracker or you know someone else that is interested you should send this video over to clear up any confusion.

think of base stations as a certain field of view if you turn around and your device becomes unseeable by both your base stations you're going to drift so by having three in a triangular formation you get all 360 degrees of coverage so even if you turn around you're still being tracked by a base station

I feel like you missed an important fact with the Tundra trackers. Sure, the 3-pack is the same price as 3 Vive trackers--but that 3-pack comes with a waist strap and two foot-straps, which you absolutely need and would cost extra money for the Vive. And if you happen to want more than 3 trackers, the price drops more and more for 5 or more trackers (which are sub-$500).

The Tundra is now more expensive than the vive 3.0: Tundra 3-pack and vrchat straps is $433 and that does NOT include shipping (Plus, the 3-pack is not even available right now.. You can only order the 4-pack). Vive Tracker 3.0's and a decent set of three straps are $427 on Amazon (and if you are a prime member they have free shipping.) So tundra trackers are about 5% more now. (If you were a BACKER, I suppose it was a better deal by about $60.)

This is a better and more meaningful comparison than I've seen between these trackers on KZbin before. Others have simply waved the trackers around rapidly and performed other such "tests" which are pretty meaningless and don't demonstrate any real differences between these products. Actual tracking performance is the most important category by far. And where you're going to see the difference between products is how well they hold up under adverse conditions. There's a saying in the camera world that all cameras (even disposable cameras) are equal at F8, and the same concept applies to trackers. I've upgraded from the 2.0 to 3.0 Vive trackers as soon as they were released, and adverse conditions is exactly where you see a ton of improvement. Unlike the 2.0's, the 3.0's have dead reckoning, so they are able to continue to track even when _fully occluded_ from the basestations for a few seconds. Having the motion sensors to do this is, I believe, why the 3.0's are more expensive. The 3.0's are rock solid in my FBT usage. The 2.0's experienced tracking problems perhaps once every couple of hours when conditions got difficult for them, and so I was always mindful of avoiding those conditions. My 3.0's routinely go for several _days_ of usage without a single tracking error pretty much no matter what I do. The ultra compact nature of the Tundras has got to make tracking performance more difficult to achieve under adverse conditions, and your tests appear to bear that out. As you say, I have little doubt that Tundra will improve on the pre-release version that you tested. But I think the limitations are likely to be inherent. So I think what we're going to see is 3.0's being the highest tracking performance option while the Tundras are advantaged in price and size. Choose your poison. When you have the final Tundras, I think the best test will be actually using these products for FBT in VRChat. And doing all the things that make life difficult for trackers in real usage, like sitting down in chairs that have arm rests, laying on the floor, dancing, etc. I don't think staged tests are necessarily that useful versus actually using them in world where they will encounter all sort of random, unpredictable tracking situations.
@gogreengameon2146
@gogreengameon2146 3 жыл бұрын
Glad you guys are pushing things forward with a keen interest in FBT. As I'm probably gonna be the demographic that uses something like this when it's built into a headset, or one single camera/base station of some kind, without any need for body straps etc. I'll have you guys to thank! ☺️👍

It's been tough deciding on any of this sort of stuff since basically anything related to VR tends to be really pricey. Not only that but having enough space is also an issue considering personally I have a pretty small room size. I want to get really into VR and immerse myself as much as possible in it since being inside a video game is a thing many people wish they could do. But so far the best we can do is wait for further development

The tracking is good (but I need to buy 3rd lighthouse to cover some blank spots), and battery life is great. Also you mentioned need for replacing straps quite often: I am using 3d printed mounts, so mine Vive Trackers are mounted almost the same way as you can mount Tundra and I think you should also try this method.

And the Size is noticable when moving around but if you have had many cables lying on the floor like I did,they do tend to get caught by the 3.0 But overall I would recommend em due to they design,functionality and use of utility. The Battery especially is good,as I usually play like 4h of VRc daily,charging em each 2nd Day for 1h or 2h whit a Multi USB Charging Port.

Selling 3.0 for higher than 2.0 is smart. This makes the old stock sell faster.

Seems to me the TT is the best bang for the buck, and that's before full release even. I have hopes for Tundra!

problem is...all the 3x pledge's on their kickstarter are sold out. If you really want them, you'd have to buy 3 of the $130 pledges to get all your trackers, making the price equal to the 3.0 setup.

@@Tkdmaster1991 that's just for the time being at least though. We'll see how it plays out when they fully release, if they drop back down in price.

As someone who backed Tundra with 700$ I have full confidence in them to produce a product on par with 2.0 or even 3.0 trackers from HTC. As a 1.0 and 2.0 vive tracking user I have always had my gripes with their tracking drifts and battery issues. As of right now I'm thinking of grabbing another base station to improve my rooms tracking capabilities.

On a note about replacing trackstraps because of dead velcro I just put tape over where the velcro was. If your doing this with shoes you can just get a pair where you never take them off or if you are wearing them on your feet you can just keep them permantly strapped to size and apply more tape over time. I dance in vr anywhere between 15-30 hours a week for the last 8-9 months without needing new straps this way.

was this sponsored by TT? you seemed to be very protective of it at the end of the video lol. But really thanks. As someone looking to try to get into full-body VR, and adjusting my rooms for such a thing, this was really helpful.

Both vive trackers are even more expensive in the uk, after converting the price the price for a single tracker is $155 for 2.0 & $182 for 3.0

I'm currently using 2.0 Vive trackers on the original base stations. The biggest issues I have so far is losing tracking on my hips and battery life. The better battery life and possibly freeing up USB space is a biggie for me, so the tundra trackers seem like a good investment. Upgrading my base stations would probably help as well.
