The BEST VR Full Body Tracker - TUNDRA TRACKER Review

Hello! Today I have a video on my favorite full body tracking solution that I have been waiting more than a year for. TUNDRA TRACKERS! Here in this video I show off the tracking quality, the pros and cons of Tundra Trackers and also dabble a little bit with concepts of full body tracking in general!
Tundras have become my go to tracker for VRChat and Neos and I have grown to use them just about every day sometimes from full charge to dead. Hopefully you enjoy this video! By the way if you do want to buy Tundras they will become available again to purchase likely in February.

Officially, It’s supposed to be 9hrs now, up to 11hrs, according to an announcement that the backers got to make up for the delays. They were all supposed to be delivered in September.

@@clueless6842 tbh, COVID + Chip Shortage means we have to make sacrifices when it comes to the time projects like this one actually are released. as far as battery life is concerned, 11hrs would be most likely the best case scenario (ie: they aren't moving sitting idle but still technically consuming power)

Vive tracker 3.0 battery life is around 7, but these are a massive improvement in so many ways

It would be nice if SteamVR reported to the game engine when it lost tracking, so we could just freeze it in place. Mostly when you occlude them they go back to the origin of the scene, which is why it looks like they are flying away.

I'm fairly certain that this is already the case. At least in Unity. You can ping any connected device and see its current connection state AND its tracking state. I haven't used these options for anything (other than determining if both VR controllers are turned on), but I don't see why you couldn't use those states. The software developers or game developers would just need to integrate it into their app / game.

this already happens to me in vrchat. when i’m sitting in my chair i lose tracking on my hip a lot. usually it freezes. using vive tracker 2.0 btw

I'm surprised no one has devoloped a software solution to those jitter and flying body issues. Feel like you could just tell your computer to ignore abnormal movements with some clever programming.

It is usually not worth it since it requires a stupid amount of testing for it to not make it worse. Flying body issues are especially tricky because you can usually move faster than it flies away from your body. And the only way to fix jitters would increase latency, which is worse, especially as social vr smooth the movement for other people already.

Most of the jitter can be overcome by putting the trackers on your ankles and tightening up your hip strap. The network actually smooths out almost all of the jitter already, only you can see it on your screen.

@@mackandelius What if you just train an AI to record your movement, approximate what it should be, and correct for the errors. I know that's probably harder than I'd think, but it at least _sounds_ possible

You usually add a latency of 50ms and interpolate between every coordinate you captured in that time frame. An HTC Vive controller is the same entity with a position and a quaternion rotation in 3D space, just like a little gadget you put anywhere on your body. The 50ms timeframe also lets you calculate and resize a velocity vector to track how fast this entity is moving in 3D space over time (length of the vector). Imo this is a solved problem...

@@rysea9855 You are looking at the overall impression instead of thinking in real-time. When you notice abnormality in someone's FBT in VRChat already dozens of frames passed. But if you tell the computer to do the corrections by analyzing 2 or more frames you are already causing latency, because the computer can't look into the future (the future being that dozens of frames later when your brain acknowledges the problem, for the computer at that moment it's too late to make decision). A single frame in 90 FPS game is just 11ms. Average human reaction time is 200 ms. But ironically even a single additional frame of analysis/buffering can create a butterfly effect and make a lag noticeable to everyone. However despite this difficulty I DO believe there is a possibility to make it better. Even Facebook has a research paper with camera based FBT + kinetic human model to fix this problem.

I honestly feel like the rubberbanding caused by occluding full body sensors could be remedied in software by adding a sort of dead zone. Essentially, if one tracking point is moving much farther than the rest it just wouldn't translate that, and instead fix the point until tracking is regained. I have no idea exactly how this would work coding-wise but it seems like a good idea to me.

The real solution to this is just a straight-forward application of machine learning. It's a low effort, low-computation, high-impact use-case. It's also the way our brains make sense of real-world poses.

If you like to use OVR input emulator you can implement a smoothing filter that does pretty much what you are describing here.

It wouldn't be hard to code something in that doesn't allow the trackers to reach a certain distance apart, and especially since your body doesnt stretch around irl your idea should work and ive thought of that once before myself it should def be something out of the box with these types of devices

The ability to put the Super Dongle in the Indexes Frunk is both, a sentence I never thought I'd say, and the reason Valve included it. The whole mindset behind the frunk was, "we don't have any planned use, but some one will think of something so here's a handy port for the devs."

I love every Thrillseeker video, but man, it's often the in depth reviews of a good, well thought out product being introduced into the space that REALLY gets me excited about VR. This is definitely something that I NEED! Most of my friends have FBT and I can only dream how much more immersed you must be when you have FBT. Still kinda bummed you might need base stations but at least when they open up for consumers it just seems the T-Trackers just blow the typical Vive set up out of the water.

I have one remark to the straps part: you can also attach Vive trackers to shoes, I'm using them that way from the very beginning (the way you are doing - i have cheap shoes just for it). Only things that you need are small 3d printed mounts and 1/4 inch photographic screw.

Oh my god, I can't wait! I hope I get these soon. I wrote an open source motion capture software recently, and I could really use the new form factor on these. My vive trackers are bulky, jut out from the body a lot and run out of battery really fast. Anyways, thanks for the review!

This was a great review. Gonna share it with some friends who've been interested in experiencing Full Body but didn't want to get Vive sets, which is understandable given the price. I got my set of Tundra Trackers yesterday, although they are my first set of FBTs and I have not tried the vive ones, but coming from a user of the Kinect. I fell in love with these little Trackers. I get about 10 hours of battery life with mine. Giggling like a school girl when my friends have to plug their FBT in during long sessions, or have to sign off to charge. One friend even mention that in the 6 hours of me using them they didn't notice once that the Trackers "go BRrrr" and lose tracking and only lost tracking when I purposely occluded them.
