I remember when I first heard a man who gave a damn abiut me being alive said this to me. Never heard it from my father. He was a gangster. He never let me get tattoos or join the gang. Never let me steal or sell drugs. The day he died I lost my father my brother and my best friend. I found myself being the father non of my friends never had after. I carried his lessons and made sure they were passed on. I promised him I would be better. I am better. He wasn't some pure innocent man. He was a beast on the streets. A legend in the gang. To me. He was my hero. He never hurt anyone who didn't have it coming. He never robbed anyone who wasn't selling drugs. He never forgot that as a man with power he had responsibility to protect everyone who trusted him to do the right thing. He only ever punished those who committed evil. He could of let me die on the street right where he found me bleeding from a drive by shooting from the other street down. Bullets ripped through the thin wooden fence and hit me in the chest on the next street down. He always asked me when I'd walk home if I needed anything. No one ever asked me this. No one cared if I ate or if I even made it home. Everyone trusted me to be tough. He was the only person who ever told me it was okay to be kind.

The first time someone stood up for me was at my first dental job. She was my manager. I totally messed up on something, completely my fault and my dr starts going off on me. He had quite a temper issue. Thannya comes in and straight up defended me. Told him that even if I messed up, he shouldn’t be talking to me like that. My parents aren’t the type to do that, never really got praised or affirmation. When an afterschool teach was literally insulting me, my parent would start insulting me with them. Then went home just beat my ass. So meeting thannya and having her stick up for me like that really touched my heart. She’s my mama till this day, 8+ years later and she showed me just how hurt inside I really am about my childhood but also the parent I want to be to my children. That vocal love and affirmation is very important.

That's a sign of a real strong man. He allows himself to be vulnerable in front of other people. I hope more men will be like this. We all deserve to let our emotions out. Let people know our suffering as a man in this society.

I remember seeing Judge Mathis after the morning cartoons in the 90s, when I was on vacation or sick at home, building things with my Lego blocks… At first he was just background noise, but little by little, I began to pay attention to the cases and his passion and the way he would hear the plights of both plaintiffs and defendants and metaphorically take me to church with how passionate he is about his work, and how he also just teaches people in his court to do better as human beings. ❤
