Same! I had the same experience! Lovely writing. I understand zero of the french, but you get a tiny idea of what he means just from reading the other sentences. I had planned to look up every single french line, but it would be sooo time consuming!

I've never read Lolita, but it looks like the kind of book that will have at least 1 word we don't know in each page, so my suggestion would be to just keep reading and assume the meaning because of the context (that's what I used to do when I first started reading in English instead of Spanish). You got Lolita! It's gotta be my favorite classic but I must say, my love for this book was definitely of a slow-burn kind 😂 First time I read it, I did it in my native language and I wanted to barf 😅 Then I read it again (and again) in English and it's a whole other experience lol. I wrote a whole ass master's thesis on this book and three others so I basically know it by heart - I think it's a masterpiece. The content is disturbing, and Humbert is like one of the first unreliable narrators in literature (or at least he's mentioned as such in Booth's work), which explains why this novel is always misread and people miss the point (some have blamed the author for glorifying what this books talks about). It's so fascinating how Humbert's whole point is to convince the reader of his innocence but Nabokov never lets him because the plot/language keeps undermining his (Humbert's) rhetoric. I'd say this book is practically impossible to fully understand right away and without reading researchers' work regarding Nabokov's references and word play 😅 But it doesn't mean it can't be enjoyed. It's like a gold mine and you can discover something new every time you read it. If it weren't for my resolution not to reread books this year, I'd start it too just to read it "with" you 😂

There's a scene at the end of Scum Villains Sea Saving System which took it from a 4.5 to a 3 for me :( (I read the old fan translation) I really hope that scene isn't in the official translation, because everything else is just so much fun in the series!!

Lol when you said “look at Sanji” I felt that (he is one of my numerous anime crushes, please don’t judge) 😅 As for my TBR, I have so many books: three hefty classics which I’m saving for fall/winter, a book by Markus Zusak (I’ve also been struggling to find good books to read, but the Book Thief was so good so I figured why not), a YA book that’s giving Demon Slayer meets Princess Mononoke vibes, and I’m currently reading Normal People by Sally Rooney! To anyone who stumbles upon this that hasn’t read it yet, I highly recommend it! Her writing style is so engaging and unique, and it definitely sucked me into the book. For manga, I’m reading Natsume’s Book of Friends right now and it’s so lovely! It has beautiful illustrations for the yokai but also has such strong cottagecore energy and has kindness and empathy as a theme. It’s so understated yet beautiful and I can’t wait to watch the anime!
