If I remember correctly you did a balance shaft delete kit. That's good but I'm pretty sure I remember you leaving the 2nd gen 7 bolt bottom end on it. You need to get that out of there and toss in a 1st gen 6 bolt. It's going to keep having crank issues until you replace it.
@K6GSXRider
@K6GSXRider 2 жыл бұрын
This. 2ng gen 7 bolt bottom end is prone to spun bearing and crankwalk, ask me how i know;) This will happen again, guaranteed. The only sure fix is a 1st gen 6 bolt as mentioned.

Supra’s, BMWs and old fords have way more crank walk issues. There was a very small batch of non split thrust 95-96 7 bolts that had some wear issues due to extremely heavy pressure plates or general defects but it was less than 1%. You read that right. Split thrust 7 bolts are a better engine than the 6 bolt in every way. It’s why evos continued to use them 20 years after the 6 bolt was discontinued. Bad engine builders and horrible “bro” tuners are what kill 4G63s.

I reckon proper bearing clearances was not done when the motor was being built....but the older 4G63 motors are notorious for crank walk...hence most EVO 4 and older owners swap the motors out for EVO 6 motors and upwards...hope to see this 10 sec car running soon! Don't forget to check the turbo...all the shavings would have probably gone in there as well and maybe caused some damage.

That's how I learned how to work on a 4G63 drive it 1 day and have it broken for a week then just repeat the process. 7 bolts are junk motors 95-97 then revised 98/99 with a split thrust bearing which still failed in my 99... The problem isn’t the work you are putting into it which is excellent Quinn and who ever is involved , but the experience you have with the nature of the engine , I think 99% of the dsm has mentioned the crank walk problems, a new crank and bearings isn’t going to really solve the problem , but one for sure is knowing your torque wrench it’s not accurate but knowing how many attempts it takes to get it to the best accuracy , but I’ve also seen people using excessive pressure plate pressure that literally put enough pressure to cause the crank walk

I was going to say something about a proper break-in period and several engine oil flushes but after hearing that the crank had been unbeknownst fixed prior for the #4 journal, that would definitely explain things. The odds that you got a lemon from the beginning sucks but at least now you're starting off new, fresh and Even Steven. I still can't quite tell if they're using a 7-bolt or 6-bolt crank. Hopefully a 6-bolt or else they're going to be right back here soon with that HD clutch. PLEEEASE! DON'T HURT IT AT FUELFEST!

The "root cause" isn't the spun rod bearing, that's the result! The root cause looks like low oil pressure as 4th rod is the last to get the oil. 4G specific things aside, you need to make sure that there are no unexpected oil losses, like perhaps the balance shaft delete or some of the other oil passage blanking and deletion plates. Could be something simple like that. How did you block all the galleries that usually feed the balance shafts and are they pressure tight? Monitor oil pressure seriously with ecu auto shut downs and replace all the filters (oil pick up,lifters and cooler are like a filter too), strip and full engine clean, especially the turbo. Fingers crossed the contaminated oil didn't eat the turbo too. Didn't want to make it a 64 at the same time? You also have an exhaust leak on port 4, probably a danger to manifold.......

I came to the comments to see exactly how many say to run a 6 bolt 4g63 vs the 7 bolt but the 97-99 7 bolt engine block was not as prone to the crank walk as the 95-96 7 bolt engine was so sticking with the original engine was best for this platform

I've always thought crankwalk was more prevalent in the later 7 bolts than the early 6 bolts. At least that's what I remember from back in the day. Curious as to what 4g63 block you rebuilt.

Heard my answer at the 13:25 mark. Be careful with that 7 bolt.

Dang guys, that is no fun at all. Had you guys known that the crank had been repaired before, it would have made sense to run a 6 bolt and not worry about the possibility of crank walk

Awesome rebuild. Question though unless I missed it: Was the oil cooler replaced?

Bypass the clutch neural switch so you don’t have to press the clutch in on start up. Not part of the issue but a safety measure.
