"Why would there be a roof scoop on a tuner car?" Umm, back in those days all the big horsepower guys ran scoops. This was because when you did an engine swap, especially one of the crazy swaps(like the vq35 to vk56de) there was either no room for, or no way to hook up the A/C. And in some cases they deleted the factory A/C to lose the parasitic draw on the motor(good for a HP or two, I guess). Either way, it got really hot in a car running a V8 where a V6 used to be with no A/C, so you ran a scoop to allow cold outside air in. A couple guys I knew had an umbilical setup that used the scoop to pull in cold air for their helmets.

@xaero51503 жыл бұрын
@@jorgeirizarry5971 You ever driven in a V8 car that was originally designed to be a V6? Without air conditioning, since you can't find a way to hook up the pulley to the compressor? I have. I can still remember the radiant heat coming through the cutouts for the pedals. My old V8 350Z would go from room temp to 150 degrees in about 10-15 minutes with just normal driving. You could cut that down to about 3 minutes if you were running it hard. A funny quirk about most of the imports I have owned, they are insanely well designed. To a fault. In My Z, you could have both windows down and do 85 MPH and the wind in the cabin would not be excessive. I talked with one of the designers of my car and he said that they spent weeks working out the shape of the windows and the mirrors to prevent too much air coming in, even if you were going really fast. Now I didn't run a scoop on that car, since it didn't have t-tops or a sunroof, and I would have to hack at the roof to make it work, but having run vent scoops before, I would have run a scop in half a heartbeat if that car had come with either, as it was miserable to drive. The tiny amount of drag vs a very real risk of heatstroke is a good tradeoff. We just installed a roof scoop on the corvette fourtwo, for pretty much the same reason. Eventually I ran a bunch of fans and ran ducts to CAIs behind the fenders, but that wasn't as good as a roof scoop in my opinion.
@MrManBuzz3 жыл бұрын
@@jorgeirizarry5971 The point of roof scoops is to have airflow into the cabin.
@MrManBuzz3 жыл бұрын
@@jorgeirizarry5971 In this case it's for airflow into the cabin. I'm assuming the popularity of it is due to them being on Rally cars, which was in a somewhat of a renaissance at the time.
@xaero51503 жыл бұрын
@@jorgeirizarry5971 I get what you are saying, and most factory built cars with scoops were mid engined, BUT that doesn't change the reason that tuners used scoops, which was to keep the driver from passing out due to the unholy heat generated from an engine swap that was bigger than factory. While this particular eclipse might not have needed a scoop, I do remember a few GSXs from back in the day that absolutely did. There were some insane people in the tuner scene back then. I still remember that lunatic with a honda hatchback with a rear mounted LS(X I believe but it could have been one of the other LS variants). There was an eclipse that ran in my town that was running a supercharged V8 and had most of the hood cutout with no visibility(due to the engine and supercharger sticking out. Both of those cars ran scoops, since the honda didn't feel like running piping all over the car for AC and the GSX didn't have room for the compressor. My earnest belief is that the people that made the movie went out and saw what was running and just made a car that looked like it, not realizing that in that particular case it wasn't needed. I've spent a lot of time under the hood of a lot of cars, I even worked on some with actual mid engine scoops, and a few exotics with faux scoops, in particular a certain mclaren with the scoop option(that wasn't attached to anything. There are more use cases in this world that don't fit your narrow beliefs. I would have hated to run either the honda or the GSX (or the fourtwo for that matter) without a vent scoop, as the cabin temps get extreme, and opening the windows introduces as much or more drag than a scoop.

When you spend so much time and money trying to recreate a screen accurate car, then go to see the actual screen accurate car, and find out it is also not screen accurate? Reminds me of the nightmare people have with The General Lee and K.I.T.T from Knight Rider. Trying to restore these iconic cars with accuracy, when there have been quite a few made over time, is virtually impossible.
@madern73 жыл бұрын
The actual movie car is not an actual representation of the car that they are “showing” people get lost in these cars. I personally am a fan of these cars, I just think that people are taking this wayyyyyyyyyy to far! The perfect replica does not exist!

I love these Eclipses because I had a 1999 as my first car in Highschool. Now by the time I was in Highschool, the car was 10+ years old, but it was still super cool. It had a diamond plate floorboard & a Super Airflow Converter 2 installed. It had mostly cosmetic upgrades like headlights & tail lights, gauge clusters & dash kit. It wasn't much more than stock & most of the "upgrades" were fairly basic, but it was super fast for a 16 year old kid lol. Mine was the front wheel drive turbo, unfortunately not the AWD. I still really miss that car. If I'm ever a rich guy, I will probably go out & fix up an awesome 95-99 Eclipse.

The original car that Universal “rented” from the owner had a roof scoop. It was silver and was well known in the show circuit in the late 90s. I personally saw the car in it’s original form at Import Showoff Invitational at Anaheim convention center. Blitz Japan designed and manufactured their own body kits in the 90s. They were the originators of that side bumper kick up valance look. Robocar was actually a motorsports/accessories shop in LA during the time. VIS racing is who made knock off body kits such as the one on the Eclipse. They offered “Blitz Style” body kits for many imports and some domestics at the time.
