The brand new 2022 Range Rover P530 First Edition ($199,070 as specced in Canada, $176,175 in the US) and the 2010 Range Rover HSE LUX ($19,995 in Canada) are two potential routes that a Range Rover buyer could take. But does the P530 twin turbo V8, 530 horsepower output, and loads of luxury and tech in the new gen win out? Or is the attractive price, classic style, and…ahem… reliability of the older L322 generation enough to win you over?
Thomas and James bumble down the road in both the new and old Range Rover, discussing which of the two they would choose, and how the new one compares to its competition. We hope you enjoy the episode! Thanks for watching! SUBSCRIBE!

I have a Range Rover P38 (1995-2001), the last with a Rover V8 engine, and a body on frame setup. I've had it for nearly 3 years now, but had not put many miles on it because it's been busy collecting dust between different mechanics and shops, I still love the way it looks, but it's been a one way love thus far.

I bought a supercharged (400hp) L322, 2005 for £3995 from a private seller. Pristine condition, like new. Sure, it's old, but you still feel like the King of the Road and it is a magnificent car. Such a joy to drive. Last service only needed new brake pads. You just need to shop around for the best ones.

Purrs like a cat with the jag engine, shifts great, lots of power especially in the mid and upper end, and returns reasonable fuel economy on road trips of around 12l/100kms. Super comfort and style with some nice tech, and features, and great stereo! The issues are electronic and air suspension related typically. Also a really good off roadable/poor weather vehicle if you actually require one. And has towing ability. If it's good enough for the queen it's good enough for me lol!

@@CruiseControl1 yea, that makes way more sense the old buick V8 used in the 90's and 2000's were known for headgasket failure, then piston liners slipping. Disco's, RR, all had it . If you could keep the cooling system functional, they were otherwise pretty good tho. Top hat rebuild is the only way to truly resolve the issue after you've had a severe overheat or find a different powerplant like an LS swap. The Jag 4.4 used on the 2006-2009 models LR3, RR Sport and RR are actually quite reliable and are known to easily go 200k miles plus without issue. The 2010's and up got the 5.0 plagued with timing chain guide failure. I'd personally avoid those. The new ones sure look sweet but getting quite complicated and expensive for my tastes. Earlier Land Rover vehicles while require more attention and maintenance than a Toyota are actually very, very nice vehicles and capable off road too.

@@12pagani I put a decent amount of money into maintenance shortly after I bought it, which has made the rest of my ownership a lot less worrisome. I did the timing chains, variators, water pump, all injectors, plugs and everything to get the engine sealed back up about 6 months after I bought it. 2 air suspension compressors, alternator, fan clutch, transmission filter along with other smaller repairs over the years. All fluids changed many times over. I’m the second owner and the original owner maintained it through the dealer up until I bought it. I do all the work myself and that’s the only way to own these. No way I would have paid what the dealer wanted for some of these repairs. A Gap iiD tool is a must as well if you plan to work on it yourself.

That checklist of things to look over before buying actually seems like solid advice no matter the vehicle. I look over most of those no matter what kind of vehicle I'm thinking of buying and keep a checklist of about a hundred things to check whenever I need to purchase or help someone purchase a vehicle. It takes at least an hour to examine one properly, unless it's new of course. Who wouldn't check things like the radio, steering, shift smoothness, seats, oil quality, and windows before buying a vehicle, whether a Land Rover, Ford, Toyota, or Holden? It's a big purchase, and it's good to know what works and what doesn't to help make a decision on whether or not it's worth buying. A lot of people will just assume "Oh, it's a Toyota/Honda, so everything must work because nothing goes wrong with them." Yes, I have actually heard people say that. One I know even went and bought a twelve-year-old Toyota 4Runner just because it ran so, therefore, it must be good because. . . Toyota, right? It died a horrible death on the side of the road a little over a year and many repairs later. He drives a fourteen-year-old Lincoln SUV now, and it's been much, much, much more reliable. Four years and hasn't broken anything yet, despite being used the same way.

I have a Jag F-Type that's thankfully relatively reliable, and I have a shop that I go to for maintenance, a shop specifically working on British marques. Whenever I go, I always see a ton of Land Rovers, outnumbering any other car there 9 to 1. I ask the shop owner what's with the disparity, and he says, in his words, "These Land Rovers spend more time at my shop than in their owners' garages." He's just calling it as he saw it.

Just bought a 1012 Autobiography yesterday having listened to real wold experiences from log term users and having done well over 200,000 miles in contemporary Jags (last was the 4.2 supercharged V8 which has never had a single issue up to 170,000 miles on the engine) with no issues at all with regular maintenance - and that includes trips around the Nurburgring and Oulton Park (the last 2004 Jag needs new sills so I'm deciding what to do with it - the rest is as good as new - which still amazes me). This Range Rover looks pretty spectacular and I'm just expecting reasonably expensive maintenance as on any luxury/performance car ...so lets see how this goes. My real world experience means I'm relaxed and looking forward to not only only fun on the road, but using it as the world's largest lawnmower with a flail mower in my backyard ... luxury and mud plugging - that's what these are about ☺

I owned a 2012 SC Range Rover and it'll probably be the greatest vehicle I have or will ever own. Just watching this changes how my blood feels as I miss it deeply. If you know, you know. As I was reading when I purchases and other owners had their issues, they said how much it broke down n yada, but they would still do it all over again. The last of the true Range Rovers with it classic boxey recognisable design. Man, it was absolute love....although offroading this beast with 20 inch wheels...ehhh. lol I can't tell you how desperately I miss it. Long live the L322, it was the greatest they have or will ever make.

I remember when the last gen RR (the one in between these two shown in the video) first came out, I went to see it at the car show in Toronto. As I sat in the SUV the first thing the sales told me, with such pride, is "It's all leather, 17 cows died for this car." Then went on to say the upholstery in the non-autobiography version is not leather, therefore only 14 cows. How times have changed!

Always great to see your comparison videos but I personally think that for this test, a better comparison would have been the earlier model of the generation that followed. Just to put into perspective as to whether you need this more refined version of the same shape. The newer one is similar to like iPhone 12 Pro compared to the 13 Pro. Both are similar looking but a few differences apart. Though the prices are way different. It is more like whether you want the yesteryear flagship or todays one.

I went through all of these thought processes back in January when I was looking for my current daily (2010 Range Rover HSE). Looked at the forums, personally talked with people who owned them, and even test drove them. I also was cross-shopping 1997-2007 Lexus LX’s and GX’s and test drove those too. The Lexus’s were the safe but boring choice, and also had some higher wear and a lot of deferred maintenance. The Range Rover I ended up buying was newer, had much better materials and quality, drove and rode WAY better, and just felt special to a degree Toyota could never match. Seven months later and I’m still very happy with my purchase. It’s not perfect, and I have had to do some maintenance on it. But it’s not maintenance I wouldn’t do on any other car. Find a good indie shop and you’ll be fine.

Absolutely agree with you. I've had a few different cars in the past couple years, mostly performance cars because speed is fun, but I never loved them as much as I love this car (well except for my 2008 Boxster S). It just drives so well, feels special, and makes me feel like James Bond where I could save the world and look good doing it too. I went with a 2008 Supercharged with the 4.2L. The thought of the 5.0 timing chain slapping and absolutely grenading the valve train would be just too much for me to handle, both mentally and financially. The older Jag units are pretty strong, with some minor here and there stuff. However, one thing that amazes me about this car is the community support (misery loves company?) and knowledge. I'd say it ranks up there with the Porsche crowd. Now, with the leather cladded elephant in the room, they're actually not unreliable if you find the right one. The Range Rover game is all about preventative maintenance, changing the oils every 5000 miles, changing the transmission and dif fluids every 50-60k miles, etc. If you do the proper preventative stuff, they're pretty solid. It's when there's a weird ticking noise, or you let the air suspension compressor just run all the time, then things get super expensive real quick, but if you can turn your own wrench and do the maintenance on them, they're not too horribly expensive or unreliable.

agree, this was me except in the lexus and jag sports car segment, same engine. the jaguar v8s have proved to be very reliable, have put 10k miles in under a year on mine and only needed an alternator and oil change. both our xk8 and xk have had some preventitive maintenance done however, the 4.0 needed its chains and thermostat, the 4.2 needed the thermostat, hoses for good measure also. a little preventative maintenance makes these cars bulletproof. knock on wood as always (theres a good amount in both of them so i should be good)

It was one single device that managed the ABS brakes, traction control and hill descent. Plus a dozen other little things. I swear I (eventually) put as much into keeping it running as I did buying it. Not to mention it was designed for a much smaller person.
