The out of cab shots to compliment this video along with the commentary is top notch.

Memory lane! I lived in Harrow until 2007 & would always try to get a Chiltern train in to Marylebone because it was 12 minutes non stop & going into the tunnel below Finchley Rd got me every time! Of course there was also the Met line into Baker St & beyond.I now live in Rugby which,of course was GCR;there is a lot still to see of what,s left.

That was a pleasant trip down memory lane, as a secondman and later as a young driver at OOC, we worked the early morning parcels and paper train from Paddington usually consisting of 5 vans hauled by a class 31. Semaphore signalling was 'de riguer' in those days including collection of the token between Princec Risborough and Aylesbury. Thanks for sharing.

Another excellent commentary. There are two things I regret are no longer with us. The click-clack sounds of the jointed track and the sound of the 'slam doors' being closed. Gone, but not forgotten.

I always like seeing Aylesbury Station and the Risborough single track section. I have a lot of memories of it as a kid growing up in the 80's and watching the 115's going to and from Marylebone. Even in those days, there were still a lot of freight pulled by 31's, 25's and my favourites the big and very noisy 37's! We lived opposite the now long gone signal box and the sound of the many semaphore signals clacking down after the trains had passed is still burned in to my memories.

The last 17 minutes are driver's eye view of the Princes Risborough-Aylesbury line. This is very useful film. Start at 1:01:20. The speed limit on the line is given as 40mph which is absurd and unnecessary - the line is suitable for 70mph. It is too slow a journey, which may explain why patronage is low and the residents around the local stations, Monks Risborough and Little Kimble, do not use the service - even though it gives them an hourly train to both Aylesbury and High Wycombe (and on to London). At 1:11:20 and 1:11:38 we see two farm flat crossings with warning signs, closely followed at 1:11:53 by a half-barrier level crossing at which the speed limit is a ridiculous 20 mph (10 mph for freight trains). This restriction has persisted for decades and contributes to the line being seen as slow and unattractive to use. At 1:11:20 is mention of the former South Aylesbury Halt (1936-1967). Since it closed, housing development has spread south and the line runs through development for a mile, A station at Churchill Avenue overbridge (1:14:32) would serve a large population which is never going to travel to Aylesbury Town station to travel to Wycombe or beyond. .Investing in the line, upping speed to 70 mph, stopping at stations smartly, adding a station in South Aylesbury and eliminating the speed restriction at the level crossing would together make the service much more attractive and give the line revenue which it is not earning at present. If the late Adrian Shooter were still with us and in charge of Chiltern Railways, he would have knocked heads together, got Network Rail to agree to the line speed increase, and Buckinghamshire Council public transport unit to sort out the level crossing and fund a new station platform at Churchill Avenue. And ensured that the timetable every hour gave Aylesbury people a quick connection at Princes Risborough to Banbury and Birmingham (and Oxford) off the local train, while marketing the service as serving a string of Bucks town and villages. With no Adrian Shooter to do this now, we must hope for better management once Great British Railways is in charge.

It will be difficult to make that line pay - there is a parallel bus route that goes right through to High Wycombe, and Wycombe bus station is at the heart of the town centre shops (unlike the rail station). However, the opportunity afforded by the new plans to the North of Aylesbury (as a result of HS construction) may offer a future life-line, with the connection possibilities of Milton Keynes and even Cambridge.

I used to live at little kimble about 10 years ago and was only a few miles from checkers and used to catch the train frequently from little kimble to aylesbury or princes risborough which as was explained in the video it was an hourly service in either direction which was a pain which there was a bus but at the time had to walk 20 minutes either to the station or the nearest bus stop but luckily the bus went passed our house which was much better fond memories

Nice video - great route I enjoyed your commentary - well enunciated. I am surprised, though, by your pronounciation of Marylebone with a silent 'y. Is there something I don't know? Wouldn't be the first time.

Back in Great Central and LNER days most of the express trains from the north would not have used this route. They would have taken the alternative route at Grendon Underwood Junction, near Calvert and, at Ashendon Junction, joined what is now known as the Chiltern Mainline but was known then as the Great Western and Great Central Joint line, passing through Gerrard's Cross and High Wycombe and taking the current route of the Chiltern Mainline to Marylebone, via South Ruislip, Wembley and Neasden, where the route rejoins the line featured in this video.
