Please note: Matt is in the process of establishing patent rights to his invention, so please be courteous and share this URL only with SDSU faculty and staff until he "goes public" in late May. Thank you!
SDSU Physics professor Matt Anderson demonstrates his "Through the Looking Glass" transparent whiteboard. Working with colleague Mark Hatay, Anderson used LED side lighting on Sapphire shower glass with neon dry-erase markers to create a see-through white board. A small mirror mounted in front of the camera flips the image right-side-out for viewers. This demonstration shows Anderson's setup as he uses it for a sample lesson. View the completed sample lesson here: • Dragster Force Diagram .

I was a bit confused while watching this video. The way the problem was set up lead me to think that we were finding the exact acceleration of the dragster. But i realized that we are instead finding the maximum acceleration possible for the dragster. At first, I insisted in my mind that ma(x) should be greater than the force of static friction since the dragster is accelerating. I also insisted that we should be considering kinetic friction since the dragster is moving. Both of these thoughts are correct. But if we are looking at the maximum acceleration possible I can agree that it should be equal to the force of static friction. ( Recall that kinetic friction is always less than static friction, and to accelerate the dragster has to constantly overcome the kinetic friction) (also if force of acceleration ever surpasses force of friction, the wheels will lose grip and burn tires instead)

nice! are you using a UV light or blacklight there? Or do the neon markers actually light up like that under normal white LED?

As far as I remember I have seen this type of board being used in UK back in 2005. This doesn't seem knew to me.

If you use OBS studio, which is used for online gaming, you can do the flip on the fly with no mirrors. You can also incorporate a green screen if you want a different color background.

How can you do that???

I use a piece of plexiglass that I write on. My camera looks through the plexiglass. I have the camera as an input device in obs studio. In the properties for the camera you can do a horizontal flip. I have a huge green screen behind the plexiglass that be used to put whatever background you want, but black seems to work really well.

what is wrong with Khan Academy style videos? this is cool and all, but do students find it helpful or distracting to see you in the background? (as opposed to seeing a little cursor?)

It's engaging and probably saves time compared to standing up, shuffling to the board, writing, and then revealing your work. Not by much, but I see what he was going for. It is a better tool, and achieves what it sets out to achieve. Keeping eye contact while illustrating a concept.

Research also asserts that students viewing the instructor that they have seen in class and have some sort of rapport with already, do better academically. Not only is this person a stranger, the student usually know how this particular professor teaching and what they will ultimately want them to know for exams or any other assessment.

Seems a bit too much, over engineered. You can do this a LOT simpler. And they've existed since ages ago. You write on a small table-ish thing in front of you and the project it with a camera on a big screen behind you. You're facing the audiance and the screen is much MUCH bigger than this.
