And that is precisely what medical personnel do in modern clinics and hospitals. there are special laws made for times when they must break Physician-patient privilege and report to the authorities.

It also feels like a touch of muggle thinking: doctor patient confidentiality, anyone? IDK if it is but with how behind the rest of the wizarding world is, it would be nice if the medical side of things is a little ahead. 🤔😅

As someone who works in a healthcare profession I think Madam Pomfrey not saying anything about the dragon bite/poly juice fiasco makes a lot of sense. Her job is to treat student injuries and I’m order to treat things you need to know what happened and students aren’t going to tell you if they think they’re gonna get in trouble. It’s the same reasoning for why doctors/nurses/other healthcare staff tell patients to tell them all the drugs their on even the illegal ones. If they turned around and told the police people wouldn’t report the illegal substances and the consequences could be dangerous

To be fair McGonagall never knew about the dragon and Harry and Hermione got in trouble for being in the astronomy tower at night. I mean Nevel also got in trouble for trying to warn the two about Malfoy and got in trouble earning the scolding about "So you spun a story to mr.malfoy about a dragon, hoping to get him in trouble and unfortunately, Mr. Longbottom also believed you."

I'm not sure if I read this theory online somewhere or if I made it up myself but either way I have a theory that McGonagall was under the Imperius curse (courtesy of Quirrell/Voldemort) when she gave them that detention and that's why it was so dangerous. Basically a trap for Harry and at the perfect time too because Dumbledore happened to be gone.

I always assumed Ron knew about the anti-dragon laws, because Charlie is his brother and he keeps talking about them at home all the time. Also, for some animals, it's impossible to tell males and females apart when they're very young, so maybe that's why Hagrid didn't know Norberta was a girl.

Well, to find out what sex and alligator is, you have to actually insert a finger into their private parts and see what shape they are that way. And seeing how dragons are also assort of reptile, it might make sense that you have to use a similar method to know what a dragon's sex is.

"Will you please inform zis 'Agrid zat ze 'orses drink only single-malt whisky?" - Giving horses whiskey is pretty common. It's mostly used as a cure for colic but it's also given to horses as a treat to help them relax after strenuous activity (like carrying a giant, flying carriage from France to Scotland). We know the Abraxans are bred by Madame Maxime so it's logical that she'd know to ask for this after their long journey. The fact that they only drink single-malt is another indicator that Beauxbatons is all about the finer things since single-malt is more expensive. So the line isn't suggesting that Abraxans drink no other liquids than single-malt whiskey. It's saying that when giving whiskey to Abraxans, they will only drink single-malt.

RE: Malfoy not doing anything with knowing about the dragon--I saw a theory that he just *wanted to see the dragon too*. Dragons are cool, he's eleven (and even named after dragons), there's a chance to see a baby dragon and he wants in on it. Which does make sense to me. It even explains why he was just up at the tower without having told a teacher or anything--he just wanted to SEE the dragon again! Of course the trio doesn't pick up on this because he's always an asshole and trying to get at them, and to them this is obviously just more of that.

Re: Ron helping Hagrid feed the dragons… I always understood it to be for Ron’s benefit, because he enjoys it/wants to be around them, especially since Charlie works with them. Like a young child “helping” with chores around the home. The parent isn’t usually benefitted by the child’s involvement. It’s for the child’s sake, whether because they like being a little helper or because they need to learn responsibility.

The big thing I've realized about Madame Pomfrey is that she's bound by confidentiality. This is a school of magic. Even muggle kids get up to shenanigans, wizard kids' shenanigans tend to be somewhat more spectacular because of what they can do. Pomfrey knows simply that her job isn't to get these kids in trouble, it's to get them well again, and while perhaps it would be better to be able to tell Dumbledore or their head of house, for better or worse, she doesn't.

Maybe because of Charlie, Ron had had some experience or more knowledge of Dragons and would be more adaptive to helping as he may have helped his brother with creatures before while growing up? That was a thought. I wait every Sunday with my coffee and enjoy the chapter. And you bring up questions I've had, but still saying respective to the work. This is so much fun. I'm sure JK Rowling didnt know that her work would be analyzed. I'm sure in later books she was more focused and much more detailed oriented to bring forth the bigger story. I dont think she reasoned it all out in the first book.

Charlie isn't there because he is in Romania and probably couldn't just take a week off work to go to the UK and back. His friends were already in the UK, and traveling to Romania to visit him, so for them it was just a small de-tour rather than a whole separate journey. As for flying up to the castle there is nothing ever mentioned that you can't physically do that before book 6. Harry and Ron can fly in with the car in book 2, in book 3 Hermione says Sirius wouldn't be able to fly in because the dementors would notice him, in book 4 Madama Maximes horses can fly in, and they later discuss the possibility of someone removing Barty Crouch via broom without anyone interjecting it wouldn't be possible. In book 5 Harry and co. can fly out of the castle on the thestrals. But in book 6 they mention how security has gotten much tighter since Voldemort's return was openly acknowledged and the ministry started adding their resources to the protection.

Right? Like it’s so boring to have Hermione know everything because she’s the book smart one, that’s exactly what the movies did when it makes more sense for Ron to know, like I genuinely don’t get how that part is confusing 😭

The time Dumbledore and Harry fly back is the only time some is mentioned. At that time Voldemort was back, so probably more safety spells were on. Maybe even when they thought that Sirius is coming to murder Harry, but even then it seems to more like "the dementors will see and stop him if he tries to fly in"

Thing with Draco going into Gryffindor to possibly rally behind Harry being complicated is that Draco is sorted before Harry

Ron knows a lot about dragons because of Charlie. Him knowing the kinds of dragons in the country and knowing about the warlock convention that banned them seems pretty in character, especially for book 1. He's the one with general wizarding world knowledge, and has a connection to dragons. Hermione seems like she would know that stuff by this point too, tho.

I love how opinions on Hagrid are as divided in real life as they are among the book characters. I think to be a Hagrid fan, you have to really appreciate good intentions apart from actions and outcomes.

Regarding the uses of dragon's blood, cleaning solution is probably different from spot remover, when you consider that "spot" is a British expression for pimple or zit.

I think it makes sense for Ron to know about the Warlocks' Convention because Charlie, the dragon guy, might've ranted about it to his family.

That would be blessed if you'd take a wheel in creating past backstories. I'd love that! I mean there so much potential in the past stories and in this lore in general. Fantastic Beasts were not the greatest execute of that, but it has potential. I'm sure that Ben and J with such love and engagement to the Wizarding World would make amazing movies and plots!

Quick comment, the book could be from researchers. like how Charlie is working with dragons in another country, other wizards could have worked with dragons and wrote about them later in life.

It is absurd, but honestly it’s one of my favorite chapters in the book, because for 1 I love dragons, and for 2 Hagrid is in my top 3 favorite characters.

In the sixth book, Snape does say that Crabbe and Goyle failed their Defense Against the Dark Arts O.W.L.s, so it seems to me that they're probably passing in some way that is similar to how Harry and Ron pass History of Magic every year, but not the O.W.L. Whether it's Snape or someone else, I'm sure the Slytherins would have no qualms about helping them to get by even if they were awful (probably reflects better on the house as a whole, which would of course interest them all), but then they can't interfere with standardized testing, so of course they failed in that situation. I would assume they didn't only fail DADA that year.

Chickens and Rats: Where does all the food come from for the feasts? I've always gotten the impression there is more food available than anyone group of kids could ever finish. I don't think that just comes from thin air using elf magic. There are so many example of people cooking and growing food/ingredients. Maybe they can magically make chickens grow faster, but I'm assuming all the blood comes from the chickens used for meals. As for the "rodents", it is a castle, wouldn't be surprised if there was a massive population. Later, crook shanks is noted to be feasting on the rats in the castle.

I'd actually love to see a full what if Draco was in Gryffindor but the biggest obstacle I can see is Malfoy gets sorted before Harry. Harry would need to have an aversion to Slytherin house and a preference for Gryffindor, Draco would also need to learn of this preference without making Harry dislike him so that Harry doesn’t not want to be sorted into Gryffindor because Draco is in Gryffindor. I'm definitely going to run with this idea myself because Draco being sorted into Gryffindor instead of Slytherin would be a pretty big deal.

Can confirm that sneaking past Flich & Mrs Norris up to and down from the astronomy tower is indeed a level in the Philosopher's Stone PC game, even though you're not visibly carrying Nobert and Harry doesn't get caught at any point. Also, 14:32, they *don't* pass their OWLs: when Snape's arguing with Malfoy, he mentions them retaking DADA.

9:25 That IS a part in a video game! Well old late 90's pc came 'Harry Potter and the Philosophers Stone' One half of the chapter, you had to get up to the tower, in your invisibility cloak - which you had to take off to cast spells, at night, avoiding Filtch The second half, you had to make your way back down this time avoiding Filtch and Mrs Norris, destroying vases as distractions making them think it's Peeves

Charlie's work with dragons would have exposed Ron to a lot more dragon related info I think. Maybe alcohol helps dragons with the ferocity of their fire breathing. More alcohol, more heat.
