Much appreciated and my thoughts exactly! It's by far the most common issue I see people having and I had the problem myself. It's the difference between doing the xstep and knowing WHY you're doing it.

I think I understand this concept? I am 61 years old and started disc golf in June of 2022, and could only throw about 175 or so and with a lot of field work and making very slight changes ( including changing my grip to the power grip ) I can throw up to around 250 feet when everything is clicking. ( timing / proper balance etc ) if i can get to 300 feet consistently over the next year or so, I would be absolutely ecstatic.

Yeah when I was a beginner this was the biggest mistake I was doing, not firmly planting my lead foot. I instantly gained distance when I realized this. You want to generate some lag between your arm and the movement of the rest of your body, this is what creates the whip effect in the arm and firmly planting the lead foot is what enables you to transfer all of the rotational energy into the disc.

Awesome thanks. I never thought of it like this and while my foot plants and stops I do follow through with my body after my through . So I'll focus on this and hopefully be on my way to 400 ft or more finally.
@DiscGolfWizard8 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and I hope it helps! One thing I forgot to mention was that it is important to let your body follow through after the throw. You're just pausing long enough to get energy transferred into your upper body. Here's a great example of it from Drew Gibson: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nGnIlYRqg92joKs

This is a great video! I would enjoy a full speed example as well to see how you actually and safely transfer the weight through your foot ankle knee and leg, I recently embarked on this part of disc golf form as I started having pain for the first time in my right knee / back of leg, even though I have been scoring better and throwing further than ever (+500ft) I’ve been getting pain in my right outer knee and behind on the leg that I plant and turn on, this is bc of this exact issue of exploding and turning on the plant foot instead hitting and transferring the weight through my plant foot properly, there’s so much happening in those 1 to 2 seconds you have to be mindful of
@DiscGolfWizard6 ай бұрын
Great question and it's something I've struggled with from time to time. One of the keys was an old video from Ezra Aderhold ( that I don't think is on his channel) where he talked about needing to extend and straiten the knee in order to avoid this issue. It's kind of counterintuitive but it's kind of like "clearing" the knee so that all the rotation is in the heel and the hips. With that said, there are a few pros who keep their knee bent throughout the brace and throw, most notably Paul McBeth. I'm not sure if there's some function of being shorter or just finding a different way to dissipate the energy. Hope that helps!
@fromthebasement9186 ай бұрын
@@DiscGolfWizard thank you for the reply! I totally get what you’re saying. The straight knee - turning on heel method is definitely key for some bigger shots. But it’s hard to consistently remind myself to when trying to throw accurately on less than 400ft shots at times. And I have also noticed many pros keeping their knee bent and turning on it during their throw and I don’t know how they do it lol, probably just stronger tendons over time and working out/stretching a ton. It’s an interesting topic bc I’ve even talked to some golfers who have had surgery on that part of their leg (outer knee and back of knee) so there has to be a form that transfers the weight and force safely. Another method I found recently that helps with the bracing concept is creating an infinity sign with your hips and getting use to how that feels on your brace leg. But the part where you have to incorporate your feet ankle and knee is something that isn’t discussed enough imo.
@DiscGolfWizard6 ай бұрын
@@fromthebasement918 Infinity sign is a good way to describe what you're talking about, I do that too. I think a lot of it has to do with "how" you straiten your leg which is what I showed a bit of in this video which I think it what you responded to in the first place. I can do a video elaborating on that more.

Great drill,simple and "doable" ,tested and a it revealed a big flaw in my form ,just as you show it, i have been throwing with too straight legs(feels comfy),but if you allow yourself to "collapse",bring in the knee on the backleg in the last movement,it will be closer to a real drive and will maybe create get a a better habit long term,just a thought?Great video like it!
@DiscGolfWizard8 ай бұрын
Awesome, glad it was useful! This is definitely the "level one" bracing drill. There are a lot of elements to add to make it more realistic to actually x-stepping and bracing. I just wanted something to help people get that basic part of actually stopping their lower body momentum. I'll definitely be coming out with more advanced versions in the future.

God damn...you're right. Wow i can't believe i never thought about this in terms of the baseball throw. Bro that's eye opening for me. Big time. I know about the brace, but comparing it to the baseball throw really really really makes me understand the importance. Yeah....thank you.

Very helpful video and explanation of the power transfer, got a new sub here :) Gonna practice this from now on. I'm still struggling with the backhand after playing for 5-6 months, can throw about 260ft pretty consistently but it stops there. A lot of skill, technique and coordination required for the backhand!

the actual way in which power is transferred from forward motion into the throw is from the plant foot exerting a force into the right hip & pushing it inward, thus starting the upper body rotation so i'd imagine a more effective drill incorporates that feeling? of planting the front foot at the correct angle and letting the resulting force push in your hip. (saying all this because that feeling doesn't come naturally to me at all lol)

Yes, I've always liked going in slow motion to ingrain motor patterns. I've never understood why more people don't do it for parts of disc golf coaching, given how hard it is for most people to master the movement. Thanks for reminding me to emphasize this in future vids!

If the backhand is the same thing as throwing a baseball then why does everyone freak out when you don’t close your front foot?
@DiscGolfWizard8 ай бұрын
It's not exactly the same, just the same principle of stopping the lower body in order for energy to transfer into the upper body. A baseball throw you're throwing forward, in disc golf you're throwing a backhand with your side facing the target. It's almost impossible to get enough rotation from your lower body and hips if your foot is open.
@leopard31318 ай бұрын
The backhand throw is closer to swinging a baseball bat (lefty for right handed) or a backhand in tennis. These movements use a brace as well. I use an overhead baseball or football throw when teaching overhead shots (thumber or tomahawk).

When I brace good I get the high 350-400', but I rarely get my timing and snap correct when I think about stuff so if a drill can make me to thing x i can use my attention to another thing instead. Slow steady far enough. This isn't the way to 500' NOW but the way to get consistent to about 400' which a person not training (strenght and speed) at all can achieve without injuries and the unnecessery fatigue of arming everything max.
