The 1994 Seattle SuperSonics looked poised to seriously challenge for the NBA championship.
They had stormed through the regular season en route to a 63-19 record, best in the NBA.
Their lineup was loaded with stars like Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Sam Perkins and Kendall Gill.
In the first round of the playoffs, they would meet the No. 8-seeded Denver Nuggets, a team that had qualified for the playoffs with a 42-40 record.
The Nuggets had no real stars to speak of and were far too inexperienced to hang with Seattle-or at least that is what conventional wisdom seemed to indicate.
The series started off predictably enough with the Sonics cruising to victory in Games 1 and 2 by double digits.
But when the series shifted to Denver, everything changed.
The Nuggets stunned the Sonics with an impressive win in Game 3.
They then won in overtime in Game 4, and the series went back to Seattle for a deciding fifth game that no one could have possibly believed would be taking place.
In Game 5, the Sonics looked like they were not interested in playing with Denver any longer. The Sonics jumped out to an early lead, but it did not last.
Led by the inspired effort of Dikembe Mutombo, and by a huge fourth-quarter effort by Robert Pack, the Nuggets seized control of the game, and suddenly it was the Sonics who had to get up off the mat to avoid elimination.
A basket by Kendall Gill with 0.5 seconds remaining would send the game to overtime.
But in overtime the Nuggets would show everyone what they were made of.
When the final horn sounded, Denver had pulled off one of the biggest upsets ever by the final of 98-94, and we were left with one of the most recognized images in NBA playoff history-Mutombo clutching the final rebound and falling to the floor, overcome by elation.
The Nuggets had just pulled off the second-biggest upset in NBA playoff history.

@@qinghe6511 They didn't make the conference finals in 95, they got knocked out in the first round by the Lakers that year. They were playing in the Tacoma Dome in 95 while they were making Key Arena. They were bumped in the first round in 94&95. They were really good in the regular season both years but stunk it up in the playoffs. 96 they came out an smoked everyone but the Bulls. I got to see MJ live twice that season, once in the regular season an then game 4 of The Finals. Sonics won both games. I can barely remember either game I just know the Sonics won an MJ didn't have a huge game in either of them. I'm still grateful I got to see him in person. Still grateful for that 96 Sonics team as well, they brought me a ton of joy. I want the Sonics to come back when the league expands in 2025 but the game isn't the same anymore, it's not as fun to me now. The tough defense is gone and I can't stand it.

No one can sit here and say Ben's defense was the main reason they won it all....only that he was a big facet. The addition of Sheed put them over the top. Bill Russell had Sam Jones and Havlicek closing out games for him on the other end of the floor....especially when Wilt would outperform him at nearly every statistical facet. This Seattle team was MUCH more talented than the Nuggets outside of the C spot...they just ran into a brick wall named Dikembe. They couldn't get anything going in the painted area with him present. To block 6 shots a game (and alter many shots which were misses even if he wasnt credited with a block) in a series in the 90s era with the 3 pt line and widened lane compared to the 60s was unheard of

They had a lack of 3 pt shooting overall on this roster from their backcourt. Payton/Gill were the most athletic backcourt in the league but neither could shoot with range and had to rely on getting to the rim. Tbh I don't think any team in the West was beating the Rockets. And before anyone brings up how bad of a matchup the Sonics were for them the Rockets at the time had a bigger forward lineup to matchup with the Sonics compared to the team that were swept a few years later. On top of that I felt the Suns were actually the tougher matchup out of two teams at this point. Barkley was more of a versatile player compared to Kemp and KJ was as much of a problem for the Rockets guards as Payton, if not more.

Seattle had been making progress leading up to this with Kemp and Payton. 1991- make playoffs 1992- win a playoff series 1993- win 2 playoff series Each year,, going farther, But in 1994, when it seemed like they would take that final step, they instead went backwards. To think an inexperienced Nuggets team beat a SEA team that had made it to Game 7 of the ‘93 West Finals. Heck, Seattle has been in a first round game 5 the prior year with Utah so it’s not like this was unfamiliar territory

The difference between 1994 and 1993 was that they had the best record in the NBA, and were expected to win it all. They have all those expectations going against the pressure of having to play a do or die Game 5 where they could become the first #1 seed to lose to a #8 seed. Not the same pressure as trying to beat the Jazz in Game 5 in 1993. And the way they played this game, it was obvious they were feeling that pressure.

@@redpillfreedom6692 That's why I feel the Sonics would've struggled with the Rockets in a series at this point. Kemp not being a jumpshooter meant he would have to play in the post often, and the Rockets had more guys to put on him who could give him problems like Thorpe and Herrera. In 96 both were gone he didn't have to worry about those 2 anymore. The other problem the Sonics would've had going further even if they had survived this series was their rebounding they were last out of all the playoff teams in that category, the Rockets on the other hand led the league in defensive rebounding.

The best 8th seed to pull of the 😢 upset. But they were the better team lofonso ellis 🔑 also robert pack fearless and of course motombo. Sonics put this team together a year ago still started learning to be a title contender. If this was a seven game series sonics would of found a way but it was a 5 game series. But hats off to the nuggets a team win
@ChrisM07

A big factor that caused the Sonics to lose the series was them being the worst rebounding team in the playoffs. If the Nuggets were able to exploit that more experienced teams definitely would've, that's why I believe the Rockets could've also beaten them they led the league in defensive rebounding. Plus Suns were the actual team to beat in the conference the Rockets were winning the West regardless after getting past them.

what could have been if Seattle had beaten Denver. I feel they easily beat the Jazz then the eventual Champion Rocket which they owned at that time. Finally we have a Knicks vs. Sonics finals which I feel Seattle wouldve won.

Nah they won't, if Seattle can't beat an 8 seed they won't be beating any of the higher seeds. Same logic as why the Clippers wouldn't have won the chip last season, they couldn't beat the nuggs, no way they beat the lakers

They were down 0-2 going on the road against the Suns they didn't coast to the Finals. If anything the Suns were a better team compared Sonics who were actually the worst rebounding team in the playoffs.

@@mongoslade277 The Rockets with Thorpe at PF were a much tougher matchup because were a halfcourt type team which was the style the Sonics didn't like to play. It was when the Rockets played at a similar pace of the Sonics with Drexler and they had Chucky Brown at PF they weren't able to win a game. In that sweep the Sonics outrebounded the Rockets on the defensive end by a wide margin, that wasn't happening if Thorpe was there the Rockets often outrebounded teams on that end with him.

The Nuggets made them play a half court game, that's why I don't believe the "Rockets were lucky to avoid them" theory because the Rockets also played that style before Drexler was there they would've done pretty much the exact same thing. Plus there is a huge difference comparing Thorpe and Chucky Brown at PF.

Actually, Seattle's worst shooting games of that season came against the Nuggets. And the teams split the season series. The Sonics had a chance to close out the series in 4, but Kemp missed his FTs. And now they're in a do or die Game 5 facing the pressure of not wanting to become the first #1 to lose to a #8. They played this game like they had a straight- jacket on.
@ChrisM07

@@pomerlain8924 Actually there were 2 teams in the West the Nuggets and the... Rockets I don't think people realize just how good of a defensive team the Rockets were with Thorpe, the Sonics shooting average had a significant increase after he was no longer there. Hererra was also gone at that point.
