"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

I really started liking Bill Maher after seeing Religulous, because growing up in Oklahoma seeing someone openly saying "Religion is fucking stupid and I can prove it" was a breath of fresh air. But watching his show now is the embodiment of the adage of "die young and be a hero or live long enough to become the villain". Krystal did a great job on his show this last weekend, which was the first time I've seen any guest ACTUALLY hitting back with good responses in a while. Bill Maher and the other conservative hack guest saying they didn't know there was an economic collapse in 2020 was the height of Maher's bubble think. He didn't suffer economically in 2020 so it's like it never happened to him... "Why are we giving people money?!?! Can't they just live off their savings for a couple years till the pandemic is over?!?!"

Krystal showed that she *actually* can argue from a left wing perspective. I just wish that she debunked right wing propaganda when it's on her own show with Saagar. Also wish she would call out fascists and bigots more often. Breaking Point's audience has shifted VERY right wing since Krystal and Saagar started Rising a few years ago- any browse of the comment section for five minutes shows that- which tells me that Krystal as the 'left wing' voice on the show (opposite Saagar) is obviously not doing something correctly. If Krystal went on Breaking Points and talked like she did on Bill Maher, she'd be a huge asset to the left and would gain relentless praise from people, even those that stopped following her after she kind of went down the Jimmy Dore path, although not nearly as bad obviously. I hope she sees the positive reinforcement and learns something, her appearance on Real Time was very good and made me hopeful.

I mean... if you're in the position to where the death penalty is being used as coercion, you're in a bad situation no matter what. Jokes aside, I don't mind the concept of the death penalty, i do agree that there are just some people you cant really do anything with. But, they are few and far between, definitely not as many as the US likes to execute. But the only reason as to why im ideologically okay with the DP but refuse to support it in our system is because we have a broken justice system. We've literally seen a mentally challenged man get sentenced to death based on zero physical evidence and the testimony of one eye-witness. That one eye-witness also happens to be the second person involved in the crime that the guy sentenced to death was involved in, but this guy was not mentally handicapped.

I suppose you could say that about being threated with life, but that is reversible. Once you give that false confession, there is no going back. So whether innocent (or, at least someone that couldn't be found guilty beyond reasonable doubt) people get the death penalty or falsly confess, there is no practical way to reverse that.

What's funny is that Bill Maher does not like Jon Stewart and would frequently attack John as the problem. When Jon Stewart did that Rally to Restore Sanity Bill Maher would frequently attacked it. In the end John Stewart had way more impact than Bill Maher did because all of Jon's disaffected young viewers who under normal circumstances would have never voted decided to vote for Obama which gave him the edge over John McCain during that year's election. Bill Maher on the other hand only ever talked to the same partisan audience who already have their minds made up.

4000 u.s. servicemen were killed in the Iraq war. That is what people cared about at the time. 270,000 to 300,000 Iraqis were killed in violence during the invasion and occupation, including 180,000 to 200,000 who were non combatant civilians. That is out of 25 million people living in Iraq. They killed 1 in 100 Iraqis 2/3 of them innocent people. This salvation mission was more than twice as deadly for Iraq that COVID was for the U.S. If you go to another country supposedly to make that county and the world a better place and are so indiscriminate that you kill 40 innocent people for every 20 enemy combatants for every 1 u.s. soldier, and worry more about the 1 u.s. soldier than the 40 innocent people you kill, you aren’t the good guys. I feel the same way as Mr. Kulinski. Bill Maher has changed significantly in the last 2-3 years. Maher's net worth is almost $200,000,00(2 hundred million) and his proselytizing on Covid, obesity, his distain for the young(I'm 73) and the fact that he seems to be intractable on many issues saddens me. Maher has turned into, like many of my old friends, a grouchy complaining, sour old man, maybe because he realizes his mortality. Maher is not pertinent anymore on many issues, just a very wealthy old man who feels he is always right, about everything.
