We bring back some nostalgia in this new segment called THROWBACK THURSDAY😉
This week we take a look at the Penn 49 and 49A reels and what made them (and still makes them) some of the most bulletproof reels out there!
We hope you enjoy this as much as we do🎣

🎣 I love my Penn reels, - 500A Jigmaster was my first reel. 501 - narrow spool. My 49A - wide spool. My 49 - narrow spool. Many of my friends in the 1970's also had these Penn models. I see them around in buyer's/seller's shops and on fb for sale. I have a Policansky 3/0 model silver reel made in England before company moved to SA. I have some old centre pin reels. And two Australian Alvey side cast reels, - which I still use 🎣

I have probably 15 Policansky reels, among them a silver 4/O that was made in England. Mr Policansky was a South African and he was the designer of the Policansky reels... The first Policansky reels were manufactured in England. Later on they were manufactured in South Africa... Policansky is a truly South African reel! a Friend of mine in Cape Town has a red Policansky... I will confirm with him, but as far as I know only 10 red ones were ever made. It was a limited special edition.

What an awesome throwback. Love the idea of this segment. I still use these old work horses. Pairing it with an old Conolon 9Oz. Thank you again. Makes me feel like reading the old theads of Mike Scott that develoved the 49A and how they fished for yellowtail off Rooikrans. Love your channel. Keep up the good work...

I still use those, not as big but have one because that’s was what we used growing up. Don’t get me wrong, I use a coffee grinder too but I switch now n then. It’s like driving manual vs automatic, every now n then you need to drive manual……just because.

Jho now we talking 😂. I used to hunt bronzies in Namibia with a castmaster and a Daiwa 400. Days when we were young and strong.

🎣 I had a long Conoflex rod for shore angling. I can say it is one of the better old glass fibre rods. This one is straight, and light; the diameter is a bit wider than the modern rods at the handle section, but cud be a a good buy if the rod is in good condition. Silaflex rods are also better quality of the old rods as they are also straight. They have a crossed blank pattern which you can see. I have replaced rod rings on a variety of old rods, is how I know about them, 🎣

I beg to differ... 49 is the narrow spool and 49A is the wide spool. In the beginning Penn factory marked the 49A's as such on the right hand side plate (I have one in my collection). That meant that they had to manufacture separate right hand side plates for the South African market since the rest of the side plates are exactly the same as the ones exported to the rest of the world... From a manufacturing point of view it didn't make sense therefore later models of the 49A's were marked only as "49" on the right hand side plates
