Packy's ball likely started out spherical or at least more-so than it is now. Wood being a natural product has a tendency to move a bit with the seasons as it takes on and expels moisture with humidity changes so it probably got its watermelon shape gradually over many years.

Wooden bowling ball trivia: - They were made from a wood called Lignum vitae, Latin for "wood of life". Resin from Lignum vitae was used to treat various ailments. -Lignum vitae is native to the Caribbean islands and northern coast of South America. Sometimes called Ironwood (a name shared with other species) it is a very dense and durable wood. A Lignum vitae bowling ball of maximum regulation size would weigh a little under 15 pounds. -The slow-growing trees of genus Guaiacum produce Lignum vitae and are now considered an endangered species. The bowling environment of 100+ years ago was very different from today. Wood lanes then were coated with shellac and were not oiled. Shellac was waxed. The natural oily resin in Lignum vitae would eventually dry up. To help prevent chipping oil was applied to the ball. Wooden bowling balls were used exclusively until 1905, when the Evertrue rubber bowling ball was first produced. In 1914 Brunswick introduced the Mineralite and quickly became the leading bowling ball manufacturer.

I would add that because of its hardness and naturally oily properties, lignum vitae used to be used in naval applications like the bearings for propeller shafts in ships and I believe also early subs. Also, it's so dense it sinks in water.

You should commission someone to make a new wooden ball with modern grip. It would be interesting to see how that works in comparison.

Realistically, with how the watermelon wood ball is shaped, could you just make a modern day bowling ball using it as a core? The process would be brutal I'd imagine but I have to wonder

Anyone knows who determined bowling lanes should be 60 feet long and not, for example, 62 feet or 55 feet long? Also how was it determined that a strike value should be based on the results of the next 2 frames thrown as opposed to the next 3 frames or 4 frames thrown? There's hardly anything in the history of bowling that gives those kind of details.

Awesome video shedding some light on bowling ball history. Does anyone have any leads on bowling culture 150 years ago? Not much out there. Was super curious on averages, etc. The progression is obvious, however not much to find until the 1940's on league averages of the times. Already a sub. Great content.
